Since 2014\, National Geographic Explorer and photographer Ronan Donovan has examined the relationship between wild wolves and humans in order to better understand the animals\, our shared history\, and what drives the persistent human-wolf conflict. \nThe exhibition\, created by National Geographic Society and the National Museum of Wildlife Art\, will display images and videos—highlighting the contrast between wolves that live in perceived competition with humans and wolves that live without human intervention.“Wolves: Photography by Ronan Donovan” will introduce visitors to the daily lives of wolves in the Arctic—how they hunt\, play\, travel\, and rest in one of the harshest environments on Earth—with unparalleled intimacy. \nAbout Ronan Donavan\nA field biologist turned conservation photographer and filmmaker\, Ronan Donovan has explored the human relationship to nature and wildlife on all seven continents. Donovan’s passion for conserving wild animals and wild places was ignited as a child growing up in Vermont and later during his years as a wildlife field biologist researching spotted owls and chimpanzees. He transitioned to visual storytelling as a way to amplify the wildlife researchers and conservationists that Donovan collaborated with. In addition to his National Geographic work on wolves\, Donovan has documented human-chimpanzee conflicts in Uganda\, and the legacy work of primatologist Dian Fossey focused on mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park\, Rwanda. Donovan strives to reconnect viewers to the natural world through the lives of our fellow social mammals to highlight our shared past and interwoven future. \n

As Joura says\, “The two things are one: The garden is designed to elevate the experience of bonsai\, and the bonsai never look better than when they’re on display in the garden.” \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nArthur Joura has been the bonsai curator at the Arboretum since 1992 and oversaw the design and development of the Arboretum’s Bonsai Exhibition Garden. Joura augmented early training in fine art and studied bonsai with some of the leading bonsai authorities in the United States and in Japan. His greatest teachers are trees\, however. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Appalachian Ecology\nwith Dan Lazar \nWedesday\, October 21  |  1 – 3pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Core \nRegister Here!\nFrom the flood plain of the French Broad River to the summit of Mount Mitchel\, we will explore the diverse ecological communities that make up the Blue Ridge Bioregion. We will learn why spruce trees are found only on the summits of our highest mountains: why the Southern Appalachians are the lungless salamander capital of the world; and how deer and ants determine where trilliums grow. Part illustrated lecture and part on-site field trip\, this class serves as an introduction to all Special Topics in Ecology classes offered through the Blue Ridge Naturalist Program. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \n Dan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Not only will participants discover some of the best camouflaged animals in nature but they will also have their observation skills tested. There are many ways that nature hides wildlife\, join naturalist/environmental educator\, Eric Young\, and come find out the many adaptations wildlife employs to stay alive. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nEric Young retired down to North Carolina in 2020 after 23 years as a program director at the nature center on Long island. He has dedicated  his life to the field of environmental education over his 35 years. DESCRIPTION:River Systems Field Class\nwith Anton DuMars \nFriday\, October 23  |  11am – 5pm \nBRN – Core \nRegister Here!\nFor the River Systems Field Experience\, we will observe processes and indicators along the Davidson River\, a Blue Ridge tributary of the French Broad catchment basin. We consider channel hierarchy (first order\, second order\, etc.). Our stops include observation and discussions of flow and flood indicators and river forms\, such as cut banks\, point bars\, and flood channels. We observe sediment texture\, sediment load\, and consider sediment source. \n This program provides transportation to and from the class location using our minibus. We will meet at the Arboretum and return to the Arboretum. If you prefer to meet us there\, let us know and we will tell you where to meet.  \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy to moderate trails. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. SUMMARY:Guided Trail Walk
DESCRIPTION:Hit the trails and learn more about The North Carolina Arboretum’s botanically diverse forest with a guided trail walk! April through October\, this free hiking program is led by trained volunteer guides who take small groups of participants along woodland trails and through a variety of forest types. Depending on the season and each guide’s area of expertise\, topics of discussion may include wildflowers\, plant and tree identification\, natural history and more. \nGuided trail walks are limited to 15 people\, including the guide\, and are not recommended for guests under 16 years of age. Groups depart from the Baker Visitor Center Lobby on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.. \nWalks last 1.5 – 2.5 hours\, are approximately one to two miles in length. As this program is held rain or shine\, all participants should dress appropriately for the weather. \nThere is no pre-registration; walks are first-come first served and sign up sheets are located in the Baker Visitors Center. \nWalks are FREE; however\, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are appreciated. Regular parking fees apply. Arboretum Society Members always park free. \nKnow Before You Go\n\nGuided Trail Walks are not recommended for guests under 16 years of age.\nGuided Trail Walks are rain or shine and all participants should be dressed comfortably and for the weather.\nHikes cover 1-2 miles and last 1.5-2 hours.\nWell-behaved leashed pets are welcome to accompany their owners. In the rare case that a pet is disruptive or negatively impacts the experience\, the pet and its owner may be asked to excuse themselves from the guided walk.

SUMMARY:Backyard Baskets: Coiling with Natural Materials
DESCRIPTION:Backyard Baskets: Coiling with Natural Materials\nwith Alyssa Sacora \nWednesday\, October 28 |  10 – 4pm \nRegister Here!\nMany local plants lend themselves to basket making. In this workshop\, we will create a coiled vessel using leaves and grasses harvested from cultivated gardens and wild places. Coiling is a hand-stitching process that transforms a continuous bundle of fibers into a strong and versatile container. Found in cultures worldwide\, it is a beautiful technique to create one-of-a-kind baskets from plants growing in your backyard. \nParticipants can choose to complete a small basket in class or leave with extra materials to continue their basket at home. Coiling is great for beginner basket makers and those with weaving experience that want to learn more about using local plants in their creative practice. Please note that coiling requires adequate hand strength and decent eyesight. Accommodations will be made as best as possible to support participants who may have physical limitations. All materials are provided for this workshop. \n Alyssa Sacora is a crafts person exploring plant-based mediums in the form of papermaking\, book arts\, basketry and natural dyes. She finds inspiration by observing relationships in the wider world. To reduce her human footprint and encourage creative thinking\, she primarily works with locally available and repurposed natural materials. Leaves\, vines and bark from iris\, daylily\, kudzu\, okra\, tulip poplar and willow leaves are often combined with salvaged cotton fabrics to create her palette. Her artistic pursuits are directly related to her lifestyle choices with reciprocity and mindfulness as a guiding force. In addition to and in support of her craft\, she tends a 3-acre homestead in Western North Carolina with her husband\, Adam. They grow fruits and vegetables\, medicinal herbs\, and art plants. They use solar electric and solar thermal systems for electricity and heating\, collect rain water and continuously look to design their space with sustainability in mind. Alyssa has taught for a variety of organizations in WNC and often utilizes an outside setting to help her students make the connection that we are nature and that our lives are intertwined with the plants\, the soil\, and the air around us. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:How Plants Respond to Their Environment
DESCRIPTION:How Plants Respond to Their Environment\nwith Alexandra Holland \nThursday\, October 29  |  1 – 2:30pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nRegister Here!\nHow do plants handle stress?  How do they respond to their environment?  In this class we’ll explore plant hormones and movements\, as well as how plants respond to stressful conditions such as droughts and extreme temperatures.  Prerequisite:  Beginning \nAlexandra Holland has a passion for getting people excited about the natural world through classes\, hikes\, and photography.  She graduated from Duke University and earned her master’s degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin.  While in Texas\, Alexandra managed the UTEX Culture Collection of Algae at UT Austin and volunteered with education programs at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  Upon moving to Asheville\, she began volunteering with the NC Arboretum’s youth education programs.  In 2008 she was in the first class of students to be certified as Blue Ridge Naturalists.   Alexandra teaches botany classes at the NC Arboretum and leads nature hikes in Western NC for groups of all ages. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Guided Trail Walk
DESCRIPTION:Hit the trails and learn more about The North Carolina Arboretum’s botanically diverse forest with a guided trail walk! April through October\, this free hiking program is led by trained volunteer guides who take small groups of participants along woodland trails and through a variety of forest types. Depending on the season and each guide’s area of expertise\, topics of discussion may include wildflowers\, plant and tree identification\, natural history and more. \nGuided trail walks are limited to 15 people\, including the guide\, and are not recommended for guests under 16 years of age. Groups depart from the Baker Visitor Center Lobby on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.. \nWalks last 1.5 – 2.5 hours\, are approximately one to two miles in length. As this program is held rain or shine\, all participants should dress appropriately for the weather. \nThere is no pre-registration; walks are first-come first served and sign up sheets are located in the Baker Visitors Center. \nWalks are FREE; however\, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are appreciated. Regular parking fees apply. Arboretum Society Members always park free. \nKnow Before You Go\n\nGuided Trail Walks are not recommended for guests under 16 years of age.\nGuided Trail Walks are rain or shine and all participants should be dressed comfortably and for the weather.\nHikes cover 1-2 miles and last 1.5-2 hours.\nWell-behaved leashed pets are welcome to accompany their owners. In the rare case that a pet is disruptive or negatively impacts the experience\, the pet and its owner may be asked to excuse themselves from the guided walk.

This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. All materials will be provided in this class. \nJoyce Tromba is happily settled into life in lovely Western North Carolina after living and teaching around the world for 30 years. Her travels have exposed her to many fiber traditions and she has always found groups of fiber folks wherever she was to share her making with. Joyce has 20+ years teaching design\, sewing\, knitting\, quilting and bookmaking to High School students and adults. She has studied fiber and book and fiber arts at Penland\, Arrowmont\, John C. DESCRIPTION:Sacred Forests of the World\nwith Alison Ormsby \nSaturday\, November 7  |  1 – 3 pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\nThis class will explore the biological and cultural aspects of areas around the world that are conserved due to local beliefs and traditions.  Sacred natural sites include forests\, mountains\, and springs that have cultural significance.  Some sites also have taboos on use of species within the areas\, which serves a conservation function.  Most are not government-protected lands; rather\, are managed by local committees\, caretakers and/or religious leaders. Specific examples and research from India\, Ghana\, and Sierra Leone will be shared. Participants will discuss possible connections to forests in Western North Carolina. \nAlison Ormsby has a PhD in Environmental Studies and is a human ecologist with 30 years of experience working with people and protected areas\, environmental education\, and sacred natural sites. Kudzu\, often thought of as an invasive plant\, offers a surprising gift: strong\, flexible vines that make for beautiful\, functional baskets. In this workshop you’ll learn how to identify\, harvest\, and prepare kudzu responsibly\, turning an abundant wild plant into a useful basket. Together we’ll explore weaving techniques and create baskets that reflect each of our creativity. Come away with your own handmade basket\, practical knowledge for future projects\, and a new appreciation for kudzu. There will be a 30 minute lunch break and materials will be provided. If you have sharp pruners\, feel free to bring them along! \nCarleigh Fairchild has a deep love for the Earth. She gardens\, keeps bees\, wild harvests\, processes animals\, tans hides\, weaves baskets\, and finds joy in time spent around the fire. As the founder of Human Nature Connection LLC\, she is dedicated to helping others rediscover respectful and collaborative relationships with the more then human world. Carleigh’s journey—including 86 days on the survival show ALONE in Patagonia—deepened her understanding of belonging and connection. They can be made into ornaments\, magnets\, pins\, etc. They can even sit upright & be glued to the top of a cookie jar for future Christmas cookies! He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. DESCRIPTION:Blue Ridge Ecosystems – From Ice Age to the Present\nwith Dan Lazar \nWednesday\, November 18  |  1 – 3pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nRegister Here!\nBlue Ridge ecosystems have changed dramatically since the end of the last ice age 18\,000 years ago.  For example\, while glaciers still covered northern Ohio and Pennsylvania\, the summits of the Great Craggy Mountains\, the Black Mountains and the Smokies were treeless and clothed in alpine tundra vegetation\, while Mastodons and Giant Ground Sloths roamed the valleys below.  As the climate warmed\, the plant and animal communities we see today slowly developed. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. It is an energy\, a quality of presence\, a frequency. When you pause long enough to connect with it\, something shifts—awakening a greater receptivity to the richness of what is here\, to what has touched and nourished you\, and to what is quietly ready to be revealed. \nThrough intuitive painting\, guided reflection\, and expressive art-making\, we’ll explore gratitude through color\, imagery\, symbols\, and words. Noticing what catches your attention and allowing the creative process to lead\, space opens for what is within to become visible\, felt\, or known in its own way. \nNo artistic experience is needed\, only curiosity\, a willingness to listen inwardly\, and an openness to discover what reveals itself. DESCRIPTION:Beginning Botany\nwith Alexandra Holland \nFriday\, November 20  |  1 – 4pm \nBRN and BREG Core \nRegister Here!\nIt’s a tough life for a plant: make dinner\, create and nurture offspring\, fight off predators\, deal with the neighbors. In Beginning Botany we’ll explore how plants handle these daily challenges using and modifying only leaves\, stems\, and roots. We’ll cover the basics of plant structure and function. \nAlexandra Holland has a passion for getting people excited about the natural world through classes\, hikes\, and photography.  She graduated from Duke University and earned her master’s degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin.  While in Texas\, Alexandra managed the UTEX Culture Collection of Algae at UT Austin and volunteered with education programs at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  Upon moving to Asheville\, she began volunteering with the NC Arboretum’s youth education programs.  In 2008 she was in the first class of students to be certified as Blue Ridge Naturalists.   Alexandra teaches botany classes at the NC Arboretum and leads nature hikes in Western NC for groups of all ages. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! DESCRIPTION:Mammals of the Southern Appalachians\nwith Carlton Burke \nSaturday\, November 21  |  12 – 4pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nRegister Here!\nThe rugged mountains of Appalachia host a tremendous variety of mammal species ranging from tiny shrews weighing only a few ounces at most to huge mammals such as the black bear which can weigh in at several hundred pounds. Also large mammals such as the cougar\, bison\, and elk also once commonly roamed these mountains. In this class we will discuss present and past mammals of the region\, their distribution\, natural life cycles\, and also controversies and cultural connections they have with the ever increasing human population of the area.  Class participants will also have a chance to meet a few live\, native mammal species of the mountain region as well. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits.
