SUMMARY:Guided Trail Walk
DESCRIPTION:Hit the trails and learn more about The North Carolina Arboretum’s botanically diverse forest with a guided trail walk! April through October\, this free hiking program is led by trained volunteer guides who take small groups of participants along woodland trails and through a variety of forest types. Depending on the season and each guide’s area of expertise\, topics of discussion may include wildflowers\, plant and tree identification\, natural history and more. \nGuided trail walks are limited to 15 people\, including the guide\, and are not recommended for guests under 16 years of age. Groups depart from the Baker Visitor Center Lobby on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.. \nWalks last 1.5 – 2.5 hours\, are approximately one to two miles in length. As this program is held rain or shine\, all participants should dress appropriately for the weather. \nThere is no pre-registration; walks are first-come first served and sign up sheets are located in the Baker Visitors Center. \nWalks are FREE; however\, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are appreciated. Regular parking fees apply. Arboretum Society Members always park free. \nKnow Before You Go\n\nGuided Trail Walks are not recommended for guests under 16 years of age.\nGuided Trail Walks are rain or shine and all participants should be dressed comfortably and for the weather.\nHikes cover 1-2 miles and last 1.5-2 hours.\nWell-behaved leashed pets are welcome to accompany their owners. In the rare case that a pet is disruptive or negatively impacts the experience\, the pet and its owner may be asked to excuse themselves from the guided walk.

SUMMARY:Salamander Diversity in the Southern Appalachians
DESCRIPTION:Salamander Diversity in the Southern Appalachians\nwith Patrick Brannon \nSaturday\, September 5  |  1 – 3:30pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nThe southern Appalachians are one of the most biologically diverse regions in the temperate world. More species of salamanders exist in these mountains than anywhere else\, and nowhere are they more abundant. Participants will be presented a lecture focusing on biology and ecology of salamanders\, biogeography\, reasons for the enormous diversity in this region\, and local threats to species diversity. Afterwards\, students will analyze and graph data to observe how different species coexist in streams. Weather permitting\, we will then search the Arboretum grounds to observe species in the wild. \nPatrick Brannon is an independent naturalist and educator. He holds a M.S. in Biology from Appalachian State University\, and has performed research on the ecology of salamanders and small mammals. Join Lauren on this walk around the Arboretum property where we will go over different ways of identifying plants and different families of flowers. Some flowers are very difficult to identify to species and some are relatively easy so we will talk about how to get as close as possible with tools we can easily carry into the field. We will be using Newcomb’s guide to key out some of the less common flowers but will focus on learning how to look closely at flowers to identify them. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. Rivers\, through both daily processes and catastrophic floods\, shape Earth’s surface through erosion and sediment transport. In River Systems of the Blue Ridge\, we will investigate how the Broad River changes character and shapes the landscape along its course from the headwaters\, through the Piedmont\, and onto the Atlantic Ocean. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. SUMMARY:History and Archaeology of the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:History and Archaeology of the Arboretum\nwith Bob and Mary Noel \nFriday\, September 11  |  1 – 4pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nThe land that makes up The North Carolina Arboretum has been home to different human groups over a span of more than 15\,000 years. It has had many uses and been shaped by those who lived here. This walk\, led by archaeologists Bob and Mary Noel\, will give participants a chance to see and hear about past occupants of this land\, and even a little history about how it became the state’s Arboretum. \nBob and Mary Noel both had long careers as archaeologists with the US Forest Service. Bob worked mostly in North Carolina where he recorded thousands of sites on national forest lands here. Most of Mary’s archaeological work was in Idaho and Ohio. Both of them have been active in living history programs as well\, most recently with the Heritage Alliance in Jonesborough\, Tennessee. The Noels now have a consulting firm and still do archaeological survey projects. DESCRIPTION:Hit the trails and learn more about The North Carolina Arboretum’s botanically diverse forest with a guided trail walk! April through October\, this free hiking program is led by trained volunteer guides who take small groups of participants along woodland trails and through a variety of forest types. Depending on the season and each guide’s area of expertise\, topics of discussion may include wildflowers\, plant and tree identification\, natural history and more. \nGuided trail walks are limited to 15 people\, including the guide\, and are not recommended for guests under 16 years of age. Groups depart from the Baker Visitor Center Lobby on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.. \nWalks last 1.5 – 2.5 hours\, are approximately one to two miles in length. As this program is held rain or shine\, all participants should dress appropriately for the weather. \nThere is no pre-registration; walks are first-come first served and sign up sheets are located in the Baker Visitors Center. \nWalks are FREE; however\, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are appreciated. Regular parking fees apply. Join Arboretum and Grandfather Mountain staff on a day filled with scanning the skies for these migratory birds. There is a chance to see hundreds of migratory hawks as they fly by the mountain on their way south for the winter. During this day we will also talk about the different types of hawks and other birds of prey that migrate following the Appalachian Mountains. \nThis program provides transportation to and from the class location using our minibus. We will meet at the Arboretum and return to the Arboretum. If you prefer to meet us there\, you will want to let us know and we will tell you where to meet.  \nThis program will take place outside and will follow rocky paths onto the Linville Peak area. Those uncomfortable with crossing the bridge can set up a chair on the building side of the bridge but would not be present for the main counting. Bring your own chair or cushion to sit on the rocks and your binoculars or spotting scope if you have one. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time with no shade. Bring a lunch and/or snacks or plan to leave the group to purchase food from Mildred’s Grill located at the Museum down the mountain a bit. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. DESCRIPTION:Geology of the Blue Ridge Field Class\nwith Anton DuMars \nThursday\, September 17  |  11am – 5pm \nBRN – Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nOn this Field Experience\, we will observe and interpret evidence of Appalachian mountain-building events. Participants can put their hands on a 380+/- million-year-old pluton and observe their post-uplift weathering\, jointing\, and exfoliation. In addition\, participants observe and interpret river processes\, transport\, and depositional environments of sediments derived from up-gradient sources. The experience includes on-site geologic map reading and interpretation. \nThis off-site program has stops in the Pisgah Forest near Brevard NC along The Pisgah Highway including Daniel Ridge and the Davidson River. \nThis program provides transportation to and from the class location using our minibus. We will meet at the Arboretum and return to the Arboretum. DESCRIPTION:Tour des Trees\nSeptember 17\, 2026 from 2 pm to 4:30 pm\nOn September 17th The NC Arboretum will be hosting the Tour des Trees cyclists and organizers for an afternoon of presentations open to the public. The Tour des Trees is an annual long-distance cycling adventure which serves as the primary public outreach and community engagement event for Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund). Since 1992\, Tour des Trees riders have cycled through communities in the U.S.\, Canada\, and the U.K.\, planting trees\, educating children and shining a light on the work done by arboriculture professionals and the importance of science-based tree care.  The 2026 Tour des Trees will take place from Saturday\, September 12 to Friday\, September 18. \nThe programs here at the Arboretum will start at 2 pm with an Ask the Arborist presentation and a special kids program will start at 3:45 pm with Professor Pricklethorn. Definitely don’t miss the fun and educational programs that will take place during this event! The event is free for Arboretum members and included with the parking fee for non-members. \nThese programs will take place in the Auditorium within the Education Center. \n

DESCRIPTION:How Plants Grow: A Close Look at Plant Growth and Structures\nwith Alexandra Holland \nFriday\, September 18  |  1 – 2:30pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nBuilding on Beginning Botany\, this class examines the variety of plant cells and tissues\, how they are organized to support plant functions\, and how they mature as a plant grows. We’ll explore the structural similarities and differences between plants as small as a trout lily and as large as a white oak.  Prerequisite:  Beginning Botany \nAlexandra Holland has a passion for getting people excited about the natural world through classes\, hikes\, and photography.  She graduated from Duke University and earned her master’s degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin.  While in Texas\, Alexandra managed the UTEX Culture Collection of Algae at UT Austin and volunteered with education programs at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  Upon moving to Asheville\, she began volunteering with the NC Arboretum’s youth education programs.  In 2008 she was in the first class of students to be certified as Blue Ridge Naturalists.   Alexandra teaches botany classes at the NC Arboretum and leads nature hikes in Western NC for groups of all ages. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! DESCRIPTION:Reptiles of Western North Carolina\nwith Carlton Burke \nSaturday\, September 19  |  12 – 4pm \nBRN – Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nThe Southern Appalachian Mountain region hosts an interesting combination of cold-blooded reptiles\, based largely on various factors such as the diverse mountain elevations and the unique forest and other habitat types. Species here range from the endangered and threatened Bog Turtle and Timber Rattlesnake to more common species such as the Black Rat Snake and Northern Fence Lizard. Participants in this class will learn about the various reptile species in western North Carolina\, their life cycles and habitats\, and threats and conservation efforts in place to protect them. In addition\, some live mountain reptiles will be joining us as special guests. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits. How have the animals and plants of the affected areas responded to this historic event?  Where do songbirds go to escape hurricane winds?  How can fish and aquatic invertebrates tolerate such massive flooding?  What factors determine which trees are toppled and which survive?  We will investigate the long-term effects of Hurricane Helene on the natural plant and animal communities of Western North Carolina during this illustrated lecture followed by a short walk on Arboretum grounds to observe the ongoing recovery of hurricane-damaged areas. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum.
