SUMMARY:Intro to the Fleshy Fungi of the NC Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Intro to the Fleshy Fungi of the NC Arboretum\nwith Jonathan Horton \nSaturday\, August 29  |  9am – 12pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nThis workshop will consist of an introductory lecture about fungi with a focus on commonly encountered groups of fleshy fungi in western North Carolina. The group will then foray on the grounds at the NC Arboretum to collect fresh specimens. We will then return to the class to go over steps involved in fungal identification including the use of dichotomous keys and microscopy. We will discuss interesting ecological information about the specimens we collect and identify. \nJonathan  Horton is Chair of the Biology Department at the University of North Carolina Asheville\, where he has been working and teaching since 2003. He earned a B.S. in Biology from UNC-Chapel Hill\, a M.S in Biology at Appalachian State University and a Ph.D. in Forest Ecology Northern Arizona University.  Jonathan is a plant physiological ecologist\, but wears a lot of hats at UNCA where he teaches Botany\, Plant Physiology\, Mycology\, Forest Ecology\, Desert Ecology\, and non-majors offerings. His research interests are varied and include the characteristics of and impacts from invasive\, non-native species; conservation biology of rare and threatened species and communities\, plant-fungal interactions\, and ecological forest management. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. Shane currently works for the Adult Education department at the NC Arboretum. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! Part illustrated lecture and part on-site field trip\, this class serves as an introduction to all Special Topics in Ecology classes offered through the Blue Ridge Naturalist Program. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum.
