SUMMARY:Fall Wildflowers of the NC Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Fall Wildflowers of the NC Arboretum\nwith Lauren Lampley \nWednesday\, September 9  |  1 – 4pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nInterested in learning how to identify wildflowers? Join Lauren on this walk around the Arboretum property where we will go over different ways of identifying plants and different families of flowers. Some flowers are very difficult to identify to species and some are relatively easy so we will talk about how to get as close as possible with tools we can easily carry into the field. We will be using Newcomb’s guide to key out some of the less common flowers but will focus on learning how to look closely at flowers to identify them. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. She currently works at the NC Arboretum as the Adult Education Coordinator managing all the programming hosted through the Adult Education Department. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Salamander Diversity in the Southern Appalachians
DESCRIPTION:Salamander Diversity in the Southern Appalachians\nwith Patrick Brannon \nSaturday\, September 5  |  1 – 3:30pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nThe southern Appalachians are one of the most biologically diverse regions in the temperate world. More species of salamanders exist in these mountains than anywhere else\, and nowhere are they more abundant. Participants will be presented a lecture focusing on biology and ecology of salamanders\, biogeography\, reasons for the enormous diversity in this region\, and local threats to species diversity. Afterwards\, students will analyze and graph data to observe how different species coexist in streams. Weather permitting\, we will then search the Arboretum grounds to observe species in the wild. \nPatrick Brannon is an independent naturalist and educator. He holds a M.S. in Biology from Appalachian State University\, and has performed research on the ecology of salamanders and small mammals. For the past 22 years he was Outreach Coordinator at the WCU Highlands Biological Station\, where he taught courses on amphibians and mammals as part of the UNC Institute for the Environment Program at HBS\, in addition to many K-12 school programs and educator workshops. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Franklinia Tree Lunch & Learn
DESCRIPTION:Franklinia Tree Lunch & Learn\nwith Jim Costa \nFriday\, September 4  |  12 – 1pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nIn 1765 the father-son botanists John and William Bartram\, of Philadelphia\, first came upon a large stand of a remarkable mystery plant in the Tea family growing along the banks of the Altamaha River in Georgia. William later dubbed this “rare and elegant flowering shrub” Franklinia alatamaha\, for their family friend Benjamin Franklin and the site of their discovery. Mysteriously\, Franklinia soon disappeared\, going extinct in nature by the century’s end. It now exists solely in cultivation\, and all specimens today descend from seeds and cuttings taken by the Bartrams and a few other late 18th century collectors. \nJoin Jim Costa and Cynthia Woodsong for this special lunchtime program celebrating the unique Franklinia alatamaha. Jim’s talk will explore the history of the Bartrams’ discovery and the biology and cultivation of Franklinia. An added feature of the program is the opportunity to observe the Arboretum’s magnificent specimen\, guided by Jim and Cynthia. Franklinia is an early fall bloomer\, one happy result of which is a gorgeous juxtaposition of its large\, showy white flowers with the shrub’s reddening fall foliage. If you are interested in checking out the shrub in person before the talk starts\, meet at 11:30am in the parking lot near the cones where Jim and Cynthia will guide participants through an observation checklist highlighting attributes of the shrub. The group will then walk up the hill to the Education Center and the talk will take place in the classroom. Lunch is not provided but students are welcome and encouraged to purchase food from the Arbor Eatery or bring their own lunch. \nThis is a special Franklinia celebration not to be missed. \nThis program takes place in the classroom with an optional portion outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather if you join for the tree viewing before the talk. \nCynthia Woodsong is a North Carolina Master Naturalist with a certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration from the North Carolina Botanical Garden\, UNC Chapel Hill. Her work focuses primarily on making realistic paper replicas of flowering plants native to the southeastern United States and conducting workshops to teach the craft to others. These paper plants are then placed in clay pots or other containers. Cynthia also incorporates paper botanicals in her “3-D botanical plates\,” rendered in watercolor or colored pencil. Her work can be seen at woodsongbotanicals.org\, and at the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill\, NC. \nJames (Jim) Costa is Professor of Biology and Executive Director of the Highlands Biological Station of Western Carolina University where he teaches biogeography\, Darwin’s Origin of Species\, and a comparative ecology field course in the southern Appalachians and Andes. An evolutionary biologist and Darwin and Wallace scholar\, Jim’s most recent books include Radical by Nature: The Revolutionary Life of Alfred Russel Wallace\, Darwin and the Art of Botany: Observations on the Curious World of Plants (with Bobbi Angell)\, and The Descent of Man: An Annotated Edition of Darwin’s Classic Work (with Elizabeth Yale). Jim’s honors include the Alfred Russel Wallace Medal and the Stephen Jay Gould Prize of the Society for the Study of Evolution\, and research fellowships at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study\, the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin\, the LuEsther T. Mertz Library of the NY Botanical Garden\, the University of Toulouse\, and the DFG-Centre for Advanced Study at the University of Hamburg. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Bonsai Exhibit Talk and Tour with Arthur Joura
DESCRIPTION:Bonsai Exhibit Talk and Tour with Arthur Joura\nTuesday\, August 18  |  5:30 – 7pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nJoin Bonsai Curator Arthur Joura on this entertaining and informative after-hours tour of the garden at its peak in summer\, a fitting showcase for the specimens and the miniature landscapes. As Joura says\, “The two things are one: The garden is designed to elevate the experience of bonsai\, and the bonsai never look better than when they’re on display in the garden.” \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nArthur Joura has been the bonsai curator at the Arboretum since 1992 and oversaw the design and development of the Arboretum’s Bonsai Exhibition Garden. Joura augmented early training in fine art and studied bonsai with some of the leading bonsai authorities in the United States and in Japan. His greatest teachers are trees\, however. His love of hiking and photographing trees in nature has shaped the Arboretum’s collection and firmly rooted it in a regional identify — one that elevates naturalism in art and the use of traditional bonsai species alongside species native to the Southern Appalachian mountains — creating in the process one of the most acclaimed public collections of bonsai in the country. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Naturalist Walk and Talk - Parasites
DESCRIPTION:Naturalist Walk and Talk – Parasites\nwith Shane Myers \nFriday\, August 14 |  1 – 3pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nWalk around the Arboretum with our staff naturalists and talk about what we see around us. We might see plants and animals\, and evidence of them going about their lives in our backyard. Topics will be based on what we see and experience and whatever questions that come up\, so every class has the potential to be quite different. \nThis month we will focus on the gall-forming organisms and parasitic organisms of the Arboretum. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nShane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. SUMMARY:Book Talk: I Have This Thing for Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Book Talk: I Have This Thing for Flowers\nwith Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn \nin conversation with Tessa Fontaine \nThursday\, August 13  |  5:30 – 7 pm \nRegister Here!\nLocation: Education Center Auditorium \nAt-the-door tickets will be available at a slightly higher price than advance tickets. \nA story of love\, marriage\, and flowers from beloved writer and gardening enthusiast Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn. \nSix months before her wedding\, Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn’s fiancé broke off their engagement. Stunned\, reeling\, and newly uninsured\, Alysia married her friend Sarah in an arrangement that secured them both free health insurance. They moved in together in the midst of the pandemic\, and with time and while tending a garden\, their marriage of convenience grew into a marriage of love. \nIn science\, art\, and mythology\, we cannot help but to see flowers as metaphors for the fleeting nature of youth\, vitality\, and love. It’s easy to casually admire something beautiful\, but it takes a discerning eye to appreciate the effort that went into nourishing and tending to that beauty. In both gardening and relationships\, one cannot expect to fill your garden with flowers if you are unwilling—or unable—to put in the work they need to thrive. In I Have This Thing For Flowers\, Sawchyn does just that\, likening the many flowers she has grown in her gardens to a range of relationships and moments of her life\, reflecting on topics from motherhood to perfumery to scientific illustration. \nCataloguing many of the great romances and loves of her life like an herbarium of flowers preserved from the garden\, Sawchyn examines the kinds of love that can’t be explained. \nAlysia will be joined by fellow author Tessa Fontaine for an in-conversation program. Malaprops will be selling books during the event and book signing will take place after the talk concludes. \nAlysia Li Ying Sawchyn teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Bucknell University. Formerly the editor in chief of The Rumpus\, she has received fellowships from The Kenyon Review and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. Their first essay collection\, A Fish Growing Lungs\, was a finalist for The Believer Book Awards. \nTessa Fontaine is the author of THE ELECTRIC WOMAN: A MEMOIR IN DEATH-DEFYING ACTS (FSG 2018)\, a New York Times Editors’ Choice; Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick\, and best book of the year by Southern Living\, Refinery29\, Amazon Editors’\, and The New York Post.  THE RED GROVE (FSG 2024)\, her debut novel\, was named a best book by Amazon Editors’ and People Magazine and was longlisted for the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize. Other writing can be found in Outside\, The New York Times\, Glamour\, People\, and more. Raised outside San Francisco\, Tessa has taught in jails and prisons\, community centers\, and currently teaches in Warren Wilson’s MFA program. She lives in Asheville\, North Carolina\, with her daughter\, goofy dog and sassy cat. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount!
