Naturalist Dan Lazar covers the life cycles of the more common local insects and discusses threats to these important elements of biodiversity. Registration will be open to students in the class for a culminating field experience to see the Blue Ghost Fireflies. \nONLINE | Three Sessions: Thursdays\, May 5\, 19 & 26\, 1:30 – 3 p.m. \nLEARN MORE

SUMMARY:The Arboretum's Bonsai Exhibition Garden in Summer: Curator's Talk & Tour
DESCRIPTION:Established in October 2005\, the Bonsai Exhibition Garden is a signature feature of the Arboretum and a unique environment displaying up to 50 specimens at a time. Of particular importance are the plants native to the Blue Ridge\, including American hornbeam\, red maple and eastern white pine\, which bring the thousand-year tradition of bonsai home to the mountains of Western North Carolina. Join Bonsai Curator Arthur Joura on this entertaining and informative after-hours tour of the garden at its peak\, a fitting showcase for the specimens. As Joura says\, “The two things are one: The garden is designed to elevate the experience of bonsai\, and the bonsai never look better than when they’re on display in the garden.”   Photo credit: Gloria Crouse

SUMMARY:AE21 Finding Beauty in the Ephemeral: Making Nature-Inspired Mandalas
DESCRIPTION:ONSITE \nExperience spring’s renewing energy at the North Carolina Arboretum by contemplating nature\, the season\, and mandala-making with found natural items. On the day of class we will meet together initially then set off separately on contemplative walks to gather inspiration and found items for making our own mandalas. We’ll take time to reflect on and discuss the experience before closing and returning collected items to nature. \nAll materials are provided. SUMMARY:AE21 Seeing Beauty: A Contemplative Photography Awe Walk
DESCRIPTION:ONSITE \nLet’s enjoy a quiet\, mindful stroll through the woods together. Strolling with an eye toward the wonders around you during an otherwise ordinary walk could have significant benefits for your mental health. An interesting new psychological study contends that people who take a fresh look at the objects\, moments and vistas that surround them during brief “awe walks” feel more upbeat and hopeful. Bundle up\, wear your mask and be awed along with documentary photography Susan Patrice who will help you look at the landscape through new and loving eyes. Participants will be sent meeting instructions for this small-group class stepping off at the Arboretum. \nSunday\, April 25; 3 to 4:30 p.m. \nLEARN MORE
