SUMMARY:Bats of the NC Arboretum with Mist Netting Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Bats of the NC Arboretum with Mist Netting Demonstration\nwith Megan Zeger and team \nFriday\, September 25  |  7 – 9pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nThe NC Arboretum hosts a variety of bat species in our forests. Join a group of biologists for a presentation about the recent acoustic bat study they conducted on the Arboretum’s property this summer and which species they found. Then\, once the presentation is over\, join the crew out in the woods for a mist netting demonstration if weather allows. During this class\, you will learn all about the different species of bats that call the NC Arboretum home\, how biologists collect data about bat presence in a location using microphones\, and even might have the chance to see live\, wild bats up close and personal! \nParticipants will not be handling the bats\, and the bats will only be handled by the trained biologists. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nMegan Zeger is a graduate student at Virginia Tech studying four imperiled bat species in the Asheville\, NC area. She has been studying and working with wildlife in the southern Appalachians since 2018 when she started her undergraduate program in wildlife conservation. She has been working with bats since 2022 and has done research on various species in Maryland\, North Carolina\, Utah\, Virginia\, West Virginia\, and Wyoming. \nJessica Davey is a wildlife biologist currently working for Virginia Tech’s Conservation and Management Institute. Having graduated from Lees-McRae College in 2021\, she has since worked primarily as a bat researcher in six different states. Her experience ranges from Mist netting and acoustic surveys to conducting hibernacula and white-nose swabbing in the caves of Florida. She hopes to continue gaining as much knowledge as she can about the world’s only flying mammal. \nKatie Kadkovsky is a recent Biology graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill. While there\, she worked in molecular biology labs at Chapel Hill and Duke studying fungi. Katie was introduced to the bat world at UNC-CH via acoustic surveys of NC’s sky islands. Currently\, she is a wildlife biologist with Virginia Tech CMI helping characterize the presence of tri-colored bats in the greater Asheville area to support conservation practices. \nLiam Jawish is a recent graduate from Virginia Tech! He is currently working as a wildlife biologist surveying bats in Asheville\, NC. He previously worked on Jaguar surveys in Belize\, CA\, and bear work in central Virginia. \nLucy Kraus is a wildlife biologist with the Conservation Management Institute at Virginia Tech. She graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2026 with a degree in environmental science. In the past\, she has worked in prescribed fire and environmental education. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Long-term Effects of Hurricane Helene on Southern Appalachian Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Long-term Effects of Hurricane Helene on Southern Appalachian Ecosystems\nwith Dan Lazar \nWednesday\, September 23  |  1 pm – 3 pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nIt has been two years since hurricane Helene ravaged the ecosystems of Western North Carolina\, uprooting trees and causing major flooding along mountain rivers and streams. How have the animals and plants of the affected areas responded to this historic event?  Where do songbirds go to escape hurricane winds?  How can fish and aquatic invertebrates tolerate such massive flooding?  What factors determine which trees are toppled and which survive?  We will investigate the long-term effects of Hurricane Helene on the natural plant and animal communities of Western North Carolina during this illustrated lecture followed by a short walk on Arboretum grounds to observe the ongoing recovery of hurricane-damaged areas. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Dan has a degree in forest biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist program since 2005. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! Rivers\, through both daily processes and catastrophic floods\, shape Earth’s surface through erosion and sediment transport. In River Systems of the Blue Ridge\, we will investigate how the Broad River changes character and shapes the landscape along its course from the headwaters\, through the Piedmont\, and onto the Atlantic Ocean. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. Ideally\, he’s spending time on a hiking trail or aboard his sailboat. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Salamander Diversity in the Southern Appalachians
DESCRIPTION:Salamander Diversity in the Southern Appalachians\nwith Patrick Brannon \nSaturday\, September 5  |  1 – 3:30pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nThe southern Appalachians are one of the most biologically diverse regions in the temperate world. More species of salamanders exist in these mountains than anywhere else\, and nowhere are they more abundant. Participants will be presented a lecture focusing on biology and ecology of salamanders\, biogeography\, reasons for the enormous diversity in this region\, and local threats to species diversity. Afterwards\, students will analyze and graph data to observe how different species coexist in streams. Weather permitting\, we will then search the Arboretum grounds to observe species in the wild. \nPatrick Brannon is an independent naturalist and educator. He holds a M.S. in Biology from Appalachian State University\, and has performed research on the ecology of salamanders and small mammals. For the past 22 years he was Outreach Coordinator at the WCU Highlands Biological Station\, where he taught courses on amphibians and mammals as part of the UNC Institute for the Environment Program at HBS\, in addition to many K-12 school programs and educator workshops. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Franklinia Tree Lunch & Learn
DESCRIPTION:Franklinia Tree Lunch & Learn\nwith Jim Costa \nFriday\, September 4  |  12 – 1pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nIn 1765 the father-son botanists John and William Bartram\, of Philadelphia\, first came upon a large stand of a remarkable mystery plant in the Tea family growing along the banks of the Altamaha River in Georgia. William later dubbed this “rare and elegant flowering shrub” Franklinia alatamaha\, for their family friend Benjamin Franklin and the site of their discovery. Mysteriously\, Franklinia soon disappeared\, going extinct in nature by the century’s end. It now exists solely in cultivation\, and all specimens today descend from seeds and cuttings taken by the Bartrams and a few other late 18th century collectors. \nJoin Jim Costa and Cynthia Woodsong for this special lunchtime program celebrating the unique Franklinia alatamaha. Jim’s talk will explore the history of the Bartrams’ discovery and the biology and cultivation of Franklinia. An added feature of the program is the opportunity to observe the Arboretum’s magnificent specimen\, guided by Jim and Cynthia. Franklinia is an early fall bloomer\, one happy result of which is a gorgeous juxtaposition of its large\, showy white flowers with the shrub’s reddening fall foliage. If you are interested in checking out the shrub in person before the talk starts\, meet at 11:30am in the parking lot near the cones where Jim and Cynthia will guide participants through an observation checklist highlighting attributes of the shrub. The group will then walk up the hill to the Education Center and the talk will take place in the classroom. Lunch is not provided but students are welcome and encouraged to purchase food from the Arbor Eatery or bring their own lunch. \nThis is a special Franklinia celebration not to be missed. \nThis program takes place in the classroom with an optional portion outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather if you join for the tree viewing before the talk. \nCynthia Woodsong is a North Carolina Master Naturalist with a certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration from the North Carolina Botanical Garden\, UNC Chapel Hill. Her work focuses primarily on making realistic paper replicas of flowering plants native to the southeastern United States and conducting workshops to teach the craft to others. These paper plants are then placed in clay pots or other containers. Cynthia also incorporates paper botanicals in her “3-D botanical plates\,” rendered in watercolor or colored pencil. Her work can be seen at woodsongbotanicals.org\, and at the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill\, NC. \nJames (Jim) Costa is Professor of Biology and Executive Director of the Highlands Biological Station of Western Carolina University where he teaches biogeography\, Darwin’s Origin of Species\, and a comparative ecology field course in the southern Appalachians and Andes. An evolutionary biologist and Darwin and Wallace scholar\, Jim’s most recent books include Radical by Nature: The Revolutionary Life of Alfred Russel Wallace\, Darwin and the Art of Botany: Observations on the Curious World of Plants (with Bobbi Angell)\, and The Descent of Man: An Annotated Edition of Darwin’s Classic Work (with Elizabeth Yale). Jim’s honors include the Alfred Russel Wallace Medal and the Stephen Jay Gould Prize of the Society for the Study of Evolution\, and research fellowships at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study\, the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin\, the LuEsther T. Mertz Library of the NY Botanical Garden\, the University of Toulouse\, and the DFG-Centre for Advanced Study at the University of Hamburg. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount!
