SUMMARY:Wild\, Tamed\, Lost & Revived Book Talk with UNC Press and Malaprops
DESCRIPTION:ON-SITE | Thursday\, September 5\, 6-7:30 pm\n \nDuring this book talk\, participants will have the opportunity to listen to Diane read portions of her book\, ask questions\, and have their book signed. Book sales will be available before and after the event and participants are welcome to bring their own book from home as well. \nIn this comprehensive food history\, Diane Flynt takes readers on a surprising journey through time and the American South\, all through the lens of the humble apple\, beginning in the colonial era and leading to present day\, highlighting Indigenous and enslaved peoples’ contributions to Southern apples and ending with her own experiences as a James Beard-nominated cider maker. For anyone who’s ever picked an apple fresh from the tree or enjoyed a glass of cider\, writer and orchardist Diane Flynt offers a new history of the apple and how it changed the South and the nation. Showing how southerners cultivated over 2\,000 apple varieties from Virginia to Mississippi\, Flynt shares surprising stories of a fruit that was central to the region for over 200 years. Alongside unexpected apple history\, Flynt traces the arc of her own journey as a pioneering farmer in the southern Appalachians who planted cider apples never grown in the region and founded the first modern cidery in the South. Flynt threads her own story with archival research and interviews with orchardists\, farmers\, cidermakers\, and more. The result is not only the definitive story of apples in the South but also a new way to challenge our notions of history. \nRegister for this book talk here! \nLearn more about our class offerings here: https://www.ncarboretum.org/education-programs/adult-education-classes/

SUMMARY:Mysteries & Wonders of the Moon
DESCRIPTION:ON-SITE | Two Sessions: Thursdays\, September 5 and 12\, 2 – 3:30 pm\n \nContrary to Shakespeare’s popular saying of the “inconstant moon\,” the Moon has been a remarkably stable and a faithful companion for the Earth for most of its history. It’s added light to our nights\, influenced ocean tides\, and created essential behavioral patterns in the living natural world all around us. In this class\, we’ll look at the patterns in the Moon’s movement through the sky\, including phases\, tidal effects\, and diurnal motion\, then examine its influences on the natural world and biological life\, and finally explore the modern scientific understanding on the nature\, origin\, and structure of the moon. We’ll also learn about the wonderful array of features on the surface of the moon visible with our eyes\, binoculars\, and telescopes and how to best observe them. Weather permitting\, we’ll go outside during each class session to practice identifying and appreciating features on the Moon with a small telescope\, provided by the instructor. No science background is required\, and participants are welcome to bring their own binoculars\, spotting scopes\, or other visual aids for the evening observing sessions. \nRegister for this class here! \nLearn more about our class offerings here: https://www.ncarboretum.org/education-programs/adult-education-classes/

SUMMARY:Summer Native Tree ID - Field Experience
DESCRIPTION:ONSITE | Saturday\, June 22\, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. \nWestern North Carolina’s lush mountain forests are home to dozens of species of trees. Participants in this field-based class will use the Arboretum forest as a great learning laboratory to consider ways to identify many of the area’s tree species based on habitats\, individual characteristics\, including eaves\, and their uses both by humans and wildlife. Participants should dress comfortably for the weather and be able to make short walks on moderate and some uphill terrain without assistance. Recommended: Participants should bring a hand lens and field journals to record observations! \nThis class counts as a core requirement for the BRN Certificate of Merit when taken with the two-hour online lecture. \nLearn more and register for open classes here: https://www.ncarboretum.org/education-programs/adult-education-classes/

SUMMARY:Azalea Expedition: Flame Azaleas at Elk Knob State Park
DESCRIPTION:FIELD | Saturday\, June 22\, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. \nThe flame azalea\, Rhododendron calendulaceum\, is one of the most familiar native azaleas in Western North Carolina. Around Asheville\, these beautiful plants are typically seen lighting up the understory in early May. At higher elevations\, however\, they bloom weeks later and often grow in dense thickets atop open-canopy balds. Elk Knob\, one of North Carolina’s newest state parks\, is a fantastic location to see a unique high-elevation bald plant community and has expansive stands of Rhododendron calendulaceum that bloom en masse in mid-June. \nHorticulturist and plant ecologist Carson Ellis\, curator of the Arboretum’s National Native Azalea Garden\, will lead participants up the two-mile trail\, stopping to admire and discuss plants along the way. Gentle switchbacks ascend through shady forest\, carpeted by sedges and dotted by wildflowers\, to the sunny 5\,500 foot summit. Once at risk of being developed\, the Nature Conservancy and community fought to protect this special site\, in part because of the rare and distinctive species that grow there! Participants will have the opportunity to look for plants like purple fringed orchid and Gray’s lily\, both of which bloom around the same time as the Rhododendron calendulaceum. \nLearn more and register for open classes here: https://www.ncarboretum.org/education-programs/adult-education-classes/

SUMMARY:Meet a Remarkable Tree: Hope for the American Chestnut
DESCRIPTION:FIELD | Thursday\, June 20\, 1 – 4 p.m. \nA hundred years ago the American Chestnut was the dominant tree on many low- to mid-elevation slopes and ridges in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. During the first half of the twentieth century\, Chestnut Blight\, caused by an introduced fungus\, killed virtually every mature Chestnut tree in Eastern North America. But the American Chestnut is not gone. \nWe will hike a short section of the Mountains to Sea Trail through a forest formerly dominated by American Chestnut\, stopping to examine some of these Chestnut sprouts while discussing the history and biology of the Chestnut Blight disease\, assessing the current status of the American Chestnut in the forest ecosystem\, and speculating on the possible return of this remarkable native tree to Southern Appalachian forests. \nLearn more and register for open classes here: https://www.ncarboretum.org/education-programs/adult-education-classes/

SUMMARY:Flower Power: A Forest Bathing Retreat
DESCRIPTION:ONSITE | Saturday\, June 15\, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. \nCelebrate the ephemeral beauty of flowers during this immersive morning nature retreat! In Japan\, the birthplace of forest bathing (Shinrin Yoku)\, they celebrate the annual cherry blossom bloom (Sakura) with a practice known as Hanami\, which translates to “contemplate the flowers.” This experience gently invites us to cultivate our attention and sensory awareness\, while noticing the evanescent nature of flowering\, both within and around us. Together\, we will explore our relationships with native wildflowers\, ourselves\, each-other\, and the more-than-human-world. \nLearn more and register for open classes here: https://www.ncarboretum.org/education-programs/adult-education-classes/
