SUMMARY:Arboretum Reads Nature's Best Hope
DESCRIPTION:Arboretum Reads Nature’s Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation That Starts in Your Yard by Douglas Tallamy \nONSITE | Two Sessions: Thursday\, April 4 & 18\, 3:30 – 5 p.m. \nDouglas W. Tallamy’s first book\, Bringing Nature Home\, awakened thousands of readers to an urgent situation: wildlife populations are in decline because the native plants they depend on are fast disappearing. His solution? Plant more natives. Another of Tallamy’s books\, The Nature of Oaks\, looked at the same issues in connection with one keystone species increasingly more imperiled in our urban canopies: the oak\, a powerhouse of the plant kingdom that supports more life forms and interactions than any other tree genus in North America. In Nature’s Best Hope\, Tallamy takes the next step and outlines his vision for a grassroots approach to conservation\, showing how homeowners everywhere can turn their yards into conservation corridors that provide wildlife habitats. Arboretum environmental educator Libby Oswalt leads this drop-in reading circle in person at the Arboretum over two sessions. Bring your questions and comments\, and then let’s discuss your plans for putting Tallamy’s recommendations to work in your own landscapes and communities! \nLearn more and Register for open classes: https://www.ncarboretum.org/education-programs/adult-education-classes/

DESCRIPTION:ONSITE | Three Sessions: Wednesdays\, March 6\, 20 & April 3\, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. \nEcological gardening is a way of thinking about the designed landscape in which gardens are no longer seen as a collection of plants\, but as a community of complex interdependencies among plants\, soils\, environment and animals. Ecology-based methods used in design\, site assessment\, planning\, planting and management are all covered in this comprehensive overview class presented in person at the Arboretum with Instructor Nina Shippen. Gardeners of all levels of interest and ability will find this informative and interactive class valuable for learning ecologically-sustainable practices for adapting and applying in gardening in a variety of landscapes. Participants in the in-person version of the class will have access to the pre-recorded lectures in case of a missed meeting. \nLearn more and Register for open classes: https://www.ncarboretum.org/education-programs/adult-education-classes/

SUMMARY:Bonsai Styling Demonstration with Curator Arthur Joura
DESCRIPTION:ONSITE | Sunday\, March 10\, 2 – 4 p.m. \nMany specimens in The North Carolina Arboretum bonsai collection were donated in non-showable condition. That is to say\, when we received these trees they were in development as bonsai but not quite there yet. The value of these plants was in their age\, with the need for a design plan and refinement being what was lacking. In bonsai\, accumulated age is worth something! In this program\, Arboretum Bonsai Curator Arthur Joura will look at three bonsai specimens currently in similar non-showable condition and discuss each in detail. Then all three will be pruned and set on a course toward better design and refinement. This program is presented by Adult & Continuing Education Programs in collaboration with the Blue Ridge Bonsai Society. There will be plenty of information for club members and others already familiar with bonsai technique\, but people who are simply curious to learn more about bonsai in general are welcomed\, too. A person needn’t be a bonsai grower to be a bonsai appreciator. Interested participants\, however\, are asked to register in advance to ensure seating in our Education Center space. \nWe’re sorry. This event is sold out and registration is now closed. You may join our Wait List for any available seats. Please email adulteducation@ncarboretum.org with any questions.

SUMMARY:Salamander Diversity of the Southern Appalachians
DESCRIPTION:ONLINE | Wednesday\, March 6\, 1 – 2:30 p.m. \nThe Southern Appalachians are one of the most biologically diverse regions in the temperate world. More species of salamanders exist in these mountains than anywhere else\, and nowhere are they more abundant. This engaging online class taught by Naturalist/Educator Patrick Brannon includes a lecture focusing on the biology and ecology of salamanders\, biogeography\, reasons for the enormous diversity in this region\, and local threats to species diversity. Following is a “lab” in which we will analyze previously collected data to examine how individual salamander species share a stream habitat. Students are encouraged to search for salamanders on their own using the local species checklist provided and various field guides. \nLearn more and Register for open classes: https://www.ncarboretum.org/education-programs/adult-education-classes/

SUMMARY:Hemlock Restoration Initiative Hike
DESCRIPTION:Hemlock Restoration Initiative will be leading a hike in partnership with the North Carolina Arboretum around the Arboretum grounds on Saturday\, October 21 at 10 am. The hike will take 3-4 hours and traverse mostly flat paths\, totaling around 2.5 miles. HRI staff will showcase hemlocks that we have treated around Bent Creek Road and the Carolina Mountain Trail. We’ll discuss the importance of our native hemlocks and the threat they face from hemlock woolly adelgid as well as methods and precautions used near streams. \nThis hike is a great opportunity to learn about hemlock conservation in the region and see the natural and recreational value that hemlocks provide. Many of the other trees in the Arboretum will be in their fall color\, meaning the hemlocks will stand out nicely with their evergreen needles showing well against autumn forest. \nThe hike is eligible for 3 hours elective credit in the Arboretum’s Blue Ridge Naturalist and Blue Ridge Eco Gardener Certificate of Merit credit. Also eligible for NCEE (NC Environmental Educator) Criteria II credits. \nFree for Arboretum members. Non-members need to pay the $20 parking fee per vehicle. To sign up\, please email outreach@savehemlocksnc.org or call 828-252-4783 by Monday\, October 16. \nFor more information on visiting the NC Arboretum and all it has to offer\, see their website. The Arboretum also offers many exciting Adult and Continuing Education Programs throughout the year\, including the Blue Ridge Naturalist and the Blue Ridge Eco Gardener Certificate of Merit programs.

SUMMARY:Arboretum Reads: Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey
DESCRIPTION:Connect to the liberating power of rest\, daydreaming\, and naps as a foundation for healing and justice. Tricia Hersey\, aka The Nap Bishop\, asks what it would be like to live in a well-rested world. Hersey casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted and our worth does not reside in how much we produce. Informed by her deep experience in theology\, activism\, and performance art\, Rest Is Resistance is a call to action\, a battle cry\, a field guide\, and a manifesto for all of us who are sleep-deprived\, searching for justice\, and longing to be liberated from the oppressive grip of Grind Culture. \nONSITE | Thursday\, February\, 2 – 3:30 p.m. \nPre-registration required for participation in an Adult Education class. \nLEARN MORE

SUMMARY:Arboretum Reads: Wintering: The Power of Rest & Retreat in Difficult Times
DESCRIPTION:Katherine May’s intimate\, revelatory memoir explores the ways we can care for and repair ourselves when life knocks us down. She pulls lessons from literature\, mythology\, and the natural world to offer instruction on the transformative power of rest and retreat. Illumination emerges from many sources: solstice celebrations and dormice hibernation\, C.S. Lewis and Sylvia Plath\, swimming in icy waters and sailing arctic seas. May models an active acceptance of sadness and finds nourishment in deep retreat\, joy in the hushed beauty of winter\, and encouragement in understanding life as cyclical\, not linear. Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times\, providing nothing less than a guiding philosophy for transforming the hardships that arise before the ushering in of a new season. Adult & Continuing Education Manager Rebecca Caldwell leads this small-group discussion\, providing prompts for writing and practice along with resources for further reading and viewing. \nONSITE | Thursday\, January 12\, 2 – 3:30 p.m. \nPre-registration is now closed for this Adult Education class. SUMMARY:Tree Trek 2022: Chestnut Sprouts and the Future of the American Chestnut
DESCRIPTION:A hundred years ago\, the American Chestnut was the dominant tree on many low to mid-elevation slopes and ridges in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Then during the first half of the twentieth century the Chestnut Blight\, caused by an introduced fungus\, killed virtually every mature Chestnut tree in Eastern North America. But the American Chestnut is not gone. We will hike a short section of the Mountains to Sea Trail through a forest formerly dominated by American Chestnut\, stopping to examine some of these Chestnut sprouts while discussing the history and biology of the Chestnut Blight disease\, assessing the current status of the American Chestnut in the forest ecosystem\, and speculating on the possible return of this remarkable native tree to our Southern Appalachian forests. \nFIELD | Monday\, October 24\, 1 – 4 p.m. \nThis field-based class is one of three meetings with a remarkable tree planned for our annual Tree Trek! \nPre-registration required for participation in an Adult Education class. \nArboretum Members receive a 10% discount on all classes. \nLEARN MORE
