SUMMARY:New Growth: Artists Respond to the Forest
DESCRIPTION:New Growth: Artists Respond to the Forest\nJan 17 – May 10\nThe North Carolina Arboretum’s new Winter Artist Residency program welcomes Asheville Artists to engage with the landscape during the shift from winter to spring. This evolving exhibition presents aesthetic responses to the sights and sounds of the dormant to waking states of our surroundings from January to March each year. \nWe encourage you to visit periodically as the exhibition unfolds. Return viewers will discover the beauty of our environment as the seasons turn and gain a deeper understanding of the work coming from emerging contemporary artists of our region. \n  \n\nShowing concurrently:\n\n\n‘Fine Details’ by artist Mary Ruden showcases botanical illustration by artist The exhibit includes colored pencil and watercolor drawings used in scientific articles\, posters\, and in folding field guides to identify plants. All artworks feature native orchids\, including a bronze statue of a Pink Lady Slipper orchid. Ruden authored and illustrated two folding field guides on native orchids of North America for Waterford Press “A Pocket Naturalist” series. Many of the species of orchids displayed in the art are native to North Carolina.

SUMMARY:George Masa Foundation 2026 Youth Conservation Photography Prize Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:George Masa Foundation 2026 Youth Conservation Photography Prize Exhibition\nMay 1 – June 30\, 2026\nEducation Center – Arbor Eatery\nPresented by the George Masa Foundation\, this exhibition features the 30 winners of the 2026 Youth Conservation Photography Prize\, selected from two age groups\, 11 to 14 and 15 to 18. The program invites young people from across the country to explore and express their connection to the natural world through photography. Inspired by the legacy of George Masa\, whose images helped protect the Southern Appalachians\, these photographs reflect careful observation\, creative vision\, and a growing awareness of the landscapes\, waters\, and wildlife that shape our lives. \nWe are grateful to the North Carolina Arboretum for graciously hosting and displaying this work\, and to our judges\, Grace Clark and Travis Bordley\, for their thoughtful review and support of these young photographers. Our mission is to inspire young people to be like George Masa; paying attention\, telling meaningful stories\, and creatively facing the environmental challenges of their generation. \nLearn more at: https://georgemasafoundation.org
