SUMMARY:Streams & Creeks of the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Streams & Creeks of the Arboretum\nwith Lauren Lampley \nON-SITE  |  Saturday\, January 18  |  1 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Elective \n  \nJoin Lauren on an exploration of the NC Arboretum’s streams and creeks to learn about how they play an important role in our park’s ecology. We will take the opportunity to look at maps of how the rivers of our region shaped the mountains and valleys before going out into the field to follow a stream until it reaches the French Broad River. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. SUMMARY:Winter Buds & Bark
DESCRIPTION:Winter Buds and Bark\nwith Lauren Lampley \nON-SITE  |  Wednesday\, January 22  |  1 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Core Credit \n\nEver wondered how you can identify a tree without its leaves? All tree species have different patterns of bark and leaf/flower buds that can be used to identify them even in winter time. In this program\, we will look closely at the common trees around the NC Arboretum trails and point out specific characteristics of their buds and bark so you can identify them even without their leaves. Recommended materials for this class: A Field Guide to the Trees and Shrubs of the Southern Appalachians by Robert E. Swanson and a naturalist’s hand lens. We have hand lenses to borrow and will only be referencing the book a few times. It is not a required text. \nThis program takes place outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially likes to learn and teach about our local ecology.
