SUMMARY:Birding for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Birding for Beginners\nwith Ben Bafaloukos \nON-SITE  |  Tuesday\, March 4  |  9 – 10:30am \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Elective \nJoin us on this birding walk around the NC Arboretum gardens and trails in search of a very common year round resident of North Carolina: Carolina wren. We will take an in-depth look at these noisy and “mousey” birds to observe their behaviors while also looking for other common winter bird species in our area. Bring your own binoculars but if you do not have a pair we have some loaner binoculars available to use during the program. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nBen Bafaloukos was born and raised outside Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, then moved to North Carolina to earn his B.S. in Environmental Sciences at NC State University. After graduating in 2020\, Ben spent a year researching and writing interpretive signage in West Virginia before moving to Asheville to work as an environmental educator. Ben is an avid birdwatcher who loves to share his knowledge and passion with others\, and he eagerly shares his wildlife observations through community science initiatives like iNaturalist and eBird. In his free time\, Ben enjoys creating art\, photographing wildlife (especially birds and bugs)\, and writing. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Scouting the First Signs of Spring
DESCRIPTION:Scouting the First Signs of Spring\nwith Lauren Lampley \nON-SITE  |  Tuesday\, March 18  |  2 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Elective Credit \nSpring is an exciting time of the year and even more so this year after the destruction following Tropical Storm Helene last year. Join Lauren on an exploration to find the first signs of spring! During this class we will also discuss the study of phenology and it is important to record the timing of spring’s events especially for climate scientists. \nThis program takes place outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially likes to learn and teach about our local ecology. She currently works at the NC Arboretum in the Adult Education Department and manages the Blue Ridge Naturalist Certificate of Merit. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount!
