This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. Shane currently works for the Adult Education department at the NC Arboretum. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Introduction to Appalachian Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Appalachian Ecology\nwith Dan Lazar \nWednesday\, February 25  |  1 – 3pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Core \nREGISTER HERE \nFrom the flood plain of the French Broad River to the summit of Mount Mitchel\, we will explore the diverse ecological communities that make up the Blue Ridge Bioregion. We will learn why spruce trees are found only on the summits of our highest mountains: why the Southern Appalachians are the lungless salamander capital of the world; and how deer and ants determine where trilliums grow. Part illustrated lecture and part on-site field trip\, this class serves as an introduction to all Special Topics in Ecology classes offered through the Blue Ridge Naturalist Program. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Dan has a degree in forest biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist program since 2005. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Beginning Botany
DESCRIPTION:Beginning Botany\nwith Alexandra Holland \nFriday\, April 4  |  1 – 4pm \nBRN + BREG – Core \nIt’s a tough life for a plant: make dinner\, create and nurture offspring\, fight off predators\, deal with the neighbors. In Beginning Botany we’ll explore how plants handle these daily challenges using and modifying only leaves\, stems\, and roots. We’ll cover the basics of plant structure and function. \nAlexandra Holland graduated from Duke University and earned her Master’s degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin.  She was in the first class of students to be certified as Blue Ridge Naturalists.  Alexandra managed the UTEX Culture Collection of Algae at UT Austin and spent many hours working with education programs at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  She has taught botany for over a decade and leads nature hikes in Western NC for groups of all ages. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Winter Buds & Bark
DESCRIPTION:Winter Buds and Bark\nwith Lauren Lampley \nON-SITE  |  Wednesday\, January 22  |  1 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Core Credit \n\nEver wondered how you can identify a tree without its leaves? All tree species have different patterns of bark and leaf/flower buds that can be used to identify them even in winter time. In this program\, we will look closely at the common trees around the NC Arboretum trails and point out specific characteristics of their buds and bark so you can identify them even without their leaves. Recommended materials for this class: A Field Guide to the Trees and Shrubs of the Southern Appalachians by Robert E. Swanson and a naturalist’s hand lens. We have hand lenses to borrow and will only be referencing the book a few times. It is not a required text. \nThis program takes place outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others.
