SUMMARY:Long-term Effects of Hurricane Helene on Southern Appalachian Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Long-term Effects of Hurricane Helene on Southern Appalachian Ecosystems\nwith Dan Lazar \nWednesday\, September 23  |  1 pm – 3 pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nIt has been two years since hurricane Helene ravaged the ecosystems of Western North Carolina\, uprooting trees and causing major flooding along mountain rivers and streams. How have the animals and plants of the affected areas responded to this historic event?  Where do songbirds go to escape hurricane winds?  How can fish and aquatic invertebrates tolerate such massive flooding?  What factors determine which trees are toppled and which survive?  We will investigate the long-term effects of Hurricane Helene on the natural plant and animal communities of Western North Carolina during this illustrated lecture followed by a short walk on Arboretum grounds to observe the ongoing recovery of hurricane-damaged areas. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Dan has a degree in forest biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist program since 2005. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! DESCRIPTION:River Systems of the Blue Ridge\nwith Anton DuMars \nFriday\, September 11  |  12 – 4pm \nBRN – Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nWater is essential to life but is also a powerful agent of change. Rivers\, through both daily processes and catastrophic floods\, shape Earth’s surface through erosion and sediment transport. In River Systems of the Blue Ridge\, we will investigate how the Broad River changes character and shapes the landscape along its course from the headwaters\, through the Piedmont\, and onto the Atlantic Ocean. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. Ideally\, he’s spending time on a hiking trail or aboard his sailboat. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Gardening with an Ecological Mindset (2-sessions)
DESCRIPTION:Gardening with an Ecological Mindset\nwith Nina Shippen \nTwo sessions: \nWednesday\, August 12  |  9:30 am – 12 pm and \nWednesday\, August 19  |  9:30 am – 12 pm \nBREG – Core (Qualifies for EcoGardening core class) \nRegister Here!\n  \nGardening with an Ecologic Mindset introduces theories\, research\, and models from ecology that a gardener can use to create robust\, resilient\, and beautiful landscapes that can support the diverse plant\, insect\, and animal communities found in a healthy ecosystem. The course is a springboard from which students can later explore gardening topics in more depth\, such as gardening on slopes\, managing stormwater\, creating hedgerows\, invasive plants\, and grappling with native vs. exotic controversies. \nNina Shippen practices residential landscape and garden design through her company Hidden Road Landscape Design\, which focuses on coupling the principles of healing gardens with sound ecologic practices to create satisfying gardens for her clients. SUMMARY:Blue Ridge Ecosystems - from the Ice Age to the Present
DESCRIPTION:Blue Ridge Ecosystems – from the Ice Age to the Present\nwith Dan Lazar \nSaturday\, June 28  |  1 – 3 pm \nBRN – Ecology Core  |  BREG – Elective \nBlue Ridge ecosystems have changed dramatically since the end of the last ice age 18\,000 years ago.  For example\, while glacial still covered northern Ohio and Pennsylvania\, the summits of the Great Craggy Mountains\, the Black Mountains and the Smokies were treeless and clothed in alpine tundra vegetation\, while Mastodons and Giant Ground Sloths roamed the valleys below.  As the climate warmed\, the plant and animal communities we see today slowly developed. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Fishes of the Southern Appalachians
DESCRIPTION:Fishes of the Southern Appalachians\nwith Carlton Burke \nON-SITE  |  Thursday\, March 13  |  12 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Wildlife of the Blue Ridge Core Credit \nThe Southern Appalachian region is rich with a variety of fish species. These include not only the better known species of game fish that we love to catch for sport or food\, but also include an incredible diversity of smaller\, lesser-known non-game fish\, which play an important role in the ecology of our aquatic mountain habitats. In this class we will discuss many of the fish species found in the mountain region and learn about their classification\, habitat\, life cycles\, and their identifying features.    \nThis program includes a lab portion of the class where students will see some features of fish hands on with real fish specimens. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits. Carlton co-hosts a weekly radio program NATURE NEWS and is also a NC state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitator.     \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount!
