SUMMARY:Building Living Soil
DESCRIPTION:Building Living Soil\nwith Everest Holmes \nFriday\, August 7  |  1 – 2:30 pm \nBREG – Soil Health Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nJoin this informative and hands-on session to learn about how to build soil biology in your area and what makes up a soil ecosystem. During the class\, you will look at images of real living soil samples and learn how to interpret what you see on the slide. Everest will also discuss soil as a living ecosystem and what the soil food web is made of. The hands-on portion will include some demonstrations about aggregate stability and infiltration of rainwater. \nEverest Holmes is a soil health educator\, farmsteader\, and product developer focused on the native biology that drives fertile\, resilient growing systems. His work centers on practical\, observation-based soil diagnostics paired with hands-on demonstrations. He helps students use their senses to connect with soil\, structure\, nutrient cycling\, water dynamics and plant performance. Everest regularly teaches and develops programming on soil ecology\, compost systems\, and regenerative practices\, with a special emphasis on making the soil food web visible through live microscopy. Everest is the Co‑founder of GROZOME and serves as Head of Product Development. He holds a B.A. in Outdoor Leadership\, is a Certified Permaculture Designer\, and a Certified Soil Food Web Lab Tech. Based in Swannanoa\, North Carolina\, Everest has practiced organic land management on 10 acre homestead for the past 14 years\, as well as managed and consulted on many other farming operations\, bringing real-world\, field-tested experience into every class. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Bonsai Exhibit Talk and Tour with Arthur Joura
DESCRIPTION:Bonsai Exhibit Talk and Tour with Arthur Joura\nTuesday\, August 18  |  5:30 – 7pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nJoin Bonsai Curator Arthur Joura on this entertaining and informative after-hours tour of the garden at its peak in summer\, a fitting showcase for the specimens and the miniature landscapes. As Joura says\, “The two things are one: The garden is designed to elevate the experience of bonsai\, and the bonsai never look better than when they’re on display in the garden.” \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nArthur Joura has been the bonsai curator at the Arboretum since 1992 and oversaw the design and development of the Arboretum’s Bonsai Exhibition Garden. Joura augmented early training in fine art and studied bonsai with some of the leading bonsai authorities in the United States and in Japan. His greatest teachers are trees\, however. His love of hiking and photographing trees in nature has shaped the Arboretum’s collection and firmly rooted it in a regional identify — one that elevates naturalism in art and the use of traditional bonsai species alongside species native to the Southern Appalachian mountains — creating in the process one of the most acclaimed public collections of bonsai in the country. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Summer Wildflowers of the NC Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Summer Wildflowers of the NC Arboretum\nwith Lauren Lampley \nFriday\, August 22  |  10 – 1pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nInterested in learning how to identify wildflowers? Join Lauren on this walk around the Arboretum property where we will go over different ways of identifying plants and different families of flowers. Some flowers are very difficult to identify to species and some are relatively easy so we will talk about how to get as close as possible with tools we can easily carry into the field. We will be using Newcomb’s guide to key out some of the less common flowers but will focus on learning how to look closely at flowers to identify them. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. She currently works at the NC Arboretum as the Adult Education Coordinator managing all the programming hosted through the Adult Education Department. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount!
