SUMMARY:History and Archaeology of the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:History and Archaeology of the Arboretum\nwith Bob and Mary Noel \nFriday\, October 16  |  1 – 4pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nThe land that makes up The North Carolina Arboretum has been home to different human groups over a span of more than 15\,000 years. It has had many uses and been shaped by those who lived here. This walk\, led by archaeologists Bob and Mary Noel\, will give participants a chance to see and hear about past occupants of this land\, and even a little history about how it became the state’s Arboretum. \nBob and Mary Noel both had long careers as archaeologists with the US Forest Service. Bob worked mostly in North Carolina where he recorded thousands of sites on national forest lands here. Most of Mary’s archaeological work was in Idaho and Ohio. Both of them have been active in living history programs as well\, most recently with the Heritage Alliance in Jonesborough\, Tennessee. The Noels now have a consulting firm and still do archaeological survey projects. Mary can be found working at the Arboretum’s Baker Information desk several days a week\, sharing her knowledge of local trails\, gardens and history. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Long-term Effects of Hurricane Helene on Southern Appalachian Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Long-term Effects of Hurricane Helene on Southern Appalachian Ecosystems\nwith Dan Lazar \nWednesday\, September 23  |  1 pm – 3 pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nIt has been two years since hurricane Helene ravaged the ecosystems of Western North Carolina\, uprooting trees and causing major flooding along mountain rivers and streams. How have the animals and plants of the affected areas responded to this historic event?  Where do songbirds go to escape hurricane winds?  How can fish and aquatic invertebrates tolerate such massive flooding?  What factors determine which trees are toppled and which survive?  We will investigate the long-term effects of Hurricane Helene on the natural plant and animal communities of Western North Carolina during this illustrated lecture followed by a short walk on Arboretum grounds to observe the ongoing recovery of hurricane-damaged areas. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Dan has a degree in forest biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist program since 2005. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Bonsai Exhibit Talk and Tour with Arthur Joura
DESCRIPTION:Bonsai Exhibit Talk and Tour with Arthur Joura\nTuesday\, August 18  |  5:30 – 7pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nJoin Bonsai Curator Arthur Joura on this entertaining and informative after-hours tour of the garden at its peak in summer\, a fitting showcase for the specimens and the miniature landscapes. As Joura says\, “The two things are one: The garden is designed to elevate the experience of bonsai\, and the bonsai never look better than when they’re on display in the garden.” \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nArthur Joura has been the bonsai curator at the Arboretum since 1992 and oversaw the design and development of the Arboretum’s Bonsai Exhibition Garden. Joura augmented early training in fine art and studied bonsai with some of the leading bonsai authorities in the United States and in Japan. His greatest teachers are trees\, however. His love of hiking and photographing trees in nature has shaped the Arboretum’s collection and firmly rooted it in a regional identify — one that elevates naturalism in art and the use of traditional bonsai species alongside species native to the Southern Appalachian mountains — creating in the process one of the most acclaimed public collections of bonsai in the country. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Intro to Interpretation for Naturalists
DESCRIPTION: Intro to Interpretation for Naturalists\nwith Lauren Lampley \nFriday\, July 31  |  10 – 1pm \nBRN – Capstone \nREGISTER HERE \nInterpretation\, at its core\, is the act of sharing the meaning of something we are seeing or observing. In the educational lens\, outdoor interpretation is a method of teaching mostly used by rangers and educators in parks throughout the US. We will go over Freeman Tilden’s Principles of Interpretation and how naturalists might use them to educate people about the natural world. This class is the reformatted Natural History Interpretation capstone class that is part of our Blue Ridge Naturalist Certification of Merit curriculum and qualifies for credit toward the BRN certification. Anyone can join this class and it is no longer limited to just BRN students at the end of their studies. \nTwo different types of tickets are available for this class: in-person full price tickets and discounted virtual only tickets. Those attending virtually will be able to attend the lecture part of the class but will miss some application of the aspects of interpretation when the in-person class goes outside. \nFor in-person attendees: This program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. She currently works at the NC Arboretum as the Adult Education Coordinator managing all the programming hosted through the Adult Education Department. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Getting to Know the Birds of WNC
DESCRIPTION:Getting to Know the Birds of WNC\nwith Martha Rollefson \nFriday\, May 8  |  10 – 12pm \nBRN – Elective \nREGISTER HERE \nAn introduction to the 60+ most common birds seen in Western North Carolina\, grouped in fun and memorable ways: the birds we most love\, the birds we “love to hate\,” seen in the forests\, seen around water\, winter visitors\, “knocking\,” little but bold\, those with different plumage for males and females\, and so on.   Photos will be augmented with recordings from the Merlin app to identify birds by sound\, and basic recommendations will be made for traditional field guides and attracting birds to your yard. \nMartha Rollefson has been a spare-time gardener for decades who got the “wildlife habitat” bug over 20 years ago. After leaving the corporate world she started working at Wild Birds Unlimited “to support her gardening habit\,” and she joined the Western Carolina Botany Club to learn more about native plants. While feeding the birds and observing how gardening and wildlife interact\, she has developed numerous techniques for saving time and money while reducing her carbon footprint. She lives next to the Etowah Valley Golf Resort with her husband David and mini-doxie\, Eva. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Identifying Regional Frogs by Sight & Sound
DESCRIPTION:Identifying Regional Frogs by Sight & Sound\nwith Patrick Brannon \nFriday\, April 3  |  1 – 3 pm \nBRN- Elective \nREGISTER HERE \nA relatively simple and effective citizen-science project is the seasonal monitoring of calling frogs. Different species call from early spring through late summer. Changes in the types\, numbers\, or calling times may be indicative of global climate change or other environmental effects. Participants will be presented with a lecture on the biology of regional frogs\, including species identification by sight and sound. Afterwards\, students will practice their identification skills by listening to recordings of calling frogs. Weather permitting\, we may venture to the Arboretum pond to observe frog species. \nPatrick Brannon is an independent naturalist and educator. SUMMARY:Paths of Enlichenment
DESCRIPTION:Paths of Enlichenment\nWith Laura Boggess \nFriday\, August 8  |  1 – 4pm \nBRN – Elective  \nREGISTER HERE \nJoin Laura for an enlightening (en-lichen-ing!) 3-hour session about lichen lifestyles and the insights they offer. We’ll begin in the classroom with an introduction to lichen identification\, their roles in ecosystems\, and traditional uses as medicine and natural dyes. Then we’ll take a slow observant walk–on lichen time–through the Arboretum grounds to practice field identification and deepen our connection with these remarkable beings. In the final portion of the session\, we’ll reflect on the deeper insights lichens offer in a time of global transformation. As we face what Joanna Macy calls “the Great Unraveling\,” marked by biodiversity loss\, economic instability\, and climate change—lichens can inspire us to reimagine resilience through cooperation\, interconnection and attentive presence.  No prior lichen knowledge is necessary. If you have a hand-lens\, please bring it. If you don’t\, we have some to lend. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLaura Boggess is a cliff ecologist\, lichenologist\, and faculty member at Mars Hill University. Her deepest passion lies in exploring cliff ecosystems—both as a scientist and a climber—and she finds continual inspiration in the quiet beauty and resilience of lichens. Through her work as a quantitative ecologist\, she studies how humans impact cliff and lichen communities in the Southern Appalachians. As an educator\, she seeks to translate the lessons of coexistence and ecological wisdom that lichens offer into meaningful reflections for our changing world. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Project WET
DESCRIPTION:Project WET: Climate\, Water\, and Resilience\nWith Michelle Pearce \nSaturday\, August 2  |  9:30 – 3:30pm \nNCEE Criteria I \nREGISTER HERE \nClimate\, Water and Resilience helps educators teach middle and high school students about climate and climate change using interactive\, objective\, science-based activities that students will enjoy. Unlike other Project WET publications\, the activities in this guide are meant to be taught in sequential order. Each lesson is a stand-alone activity and can be taught modularly; however\, information from the first activity will help students to understand the second activity\, which will then help them to understand the third activity\, and so on. Activities include topics like weather versus climate\, ocean acidification\, drought and flood impacts on soil moisture\, and water management considerations as weather events intensify. This workshop counts as 6 hours of Criteria I credit for EE Certificate. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nMichelle Pierce has worked in environmental Education since 2007.
