SUMMARY:Fall Wildflowers of the NC Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:Fall Wildflowers of the NC Arboretum\nwith Lauren Lampley \nWednesday\, September 9  |  1 – 4pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nInterested in learning how to identify wildflowers? Join Lauren on this walk around the Arboretum property where we will go over different ways of identifying plants and different families of flowers. Some flowers are very difficult to identify to species and some are relatively easy so we will talk about how to get as close as possible with tools we can easily carry into the field. We will be using Newcomb’s guide to key out some of the less common flowers but will focus on learning how to look closely at flowers to identify them. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. She currently works at the NC Arboretum as the Adult Education Coordinator managing all the programming hosted through the Adult Education Department. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Book Talk: I Have This Thing for Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Book Talk: I Have This Thing for Flowers\nwith Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn \nin conversation with Tessa Fontaine \nThursday\, August 13  |  5:30 – 7 pm \nRegister Here!\nLocation: Education Center Auditorium \nAt-the-door tickets will be available at a slightly higher price than advance tickets. \nA story of love\, marriage\, and flowers from beloved writer and gardening enthusiast Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn. \nSix months before her wedding\, Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn’s fiancé broke off their engagement. Stunned\, reeling\, and newly uninsured\, Alysia married her friend Sarah in an arrangement that secured them both free health insurance. They moved in together in the midst of the pandemic\, and with time and while tending a garden\, their marriage of convenience grew into a marriage of love. \nIn science\, art\, and mythology\, we cannot help but to see flowers as metaphors for the fleeting nature of youth\, vitality\, and love. It’s easy to casually admire something beautiful\, but it takes a discerning eye to appreciate the effort that went into nourishing and tending to that beauty. In both gardening and relationships\, one cannot expect to fill your garden with flowers if you are unwilling—or unable—to put in the work they need to thrive. In I Have This Thing For Flowers\, Sawchyn does just that\, likening the many flowers she has grown in her gardens to a range of relationships and moments of her life\, reflecting on topics from motherhood to perfumery to scientific illustration. \nCataloguing many of the great romances and loves of her life like an herbarium of flowers preserved from the garden\, Sawchyn examines the kinds of love that can’t be explained. \nAlysia will be joined by fellow author Tessa Fontaine for an in-conversation program. Malaprops will be selling books during the event and book signing will take place after the talk concludes. \nAlysia Li Ying Sawchyn teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Bucknell University. Formerly the editor in chief of The Rumpus\, she has received fellowships from The Kenyon Review and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. Their first essay collection\, A Fish Growing Lungs\, was a finalist for The Believer Book Awards. \nTessa Fontaine is the author of THE ELECTRIC WOMAN: A MEMOIR IN DEATH-DEFYING ACTS (FSG 2018)\, a New York Times Editors’ Choice; Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick\, and best book of the year by Southern Living\, Refinery29\, Amazon Editors’\, and The New York Post.  THE RED GROVE (FSG 2024)\, her debut novel\, was named a best book by Amazon Editors’ and People Magazine and was longlisted for the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize. Other writing can be found in Outside\, The New York Times\, Glamour\, People\, and more. Raised outside San Francisco\, Tessa has taught in jails and prisons\, community centers\, and currently teaches in Warren Wilson’s MFA program. She lives in Asheville\, North Carolina\, with her daughter\, goofy dog and sassy cat. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Watercolor for Beginners: Spring Petals
DESCRIPTION:Watercolor for Beginners: Spring Petals\nwith Dayna Walton \nFriday\, June 12  |  10 – 2pm \nREGISTER HERE \nJoin Dayna Walton of Solstice Handmade to learn watercolor methods to capture the many colors and forms of spring petals. We will start with a brief technique warmup\, practicing value\, stroke\, and blending. Then we will dive into color mixing\, practicing creating vivid shades found in spring blooms from just 3 primary colors. For the last half of class\, students will paint provided wildflowers from life\, practicing sketching flower forms\, color matching hues\, and lifelike values. While we paint\, we will learn how to identify common spring wildflowers currently blooming at the arboretum. This workshop is suitable for painters of all experience levels\, all supplies will be provided for use during class. \nDayna Walton came to love WNC through the Artist-in-Residence program of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 2019. Since then\, she’s been hiking and sketching and learning about ecology wherever she can. Her illustrations are her way of studying the creepy\, crawly\, tiny\, often overlooked parts of nature. From slime molds and stoneflies\, to lichens and liverworts\, you’re sure to recognize some species from the Blue Ridge Mountains in her work. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Forest Bathing Retreat: Flower Power!
DESCRIPTION:Forest Bathing Retreat: Flower Power! \nwith Asheville Wellness Tours \nSaturday\, May 3  |  10am – 1pm \nCelebrate the ephemeral beauty of flowers during this immersive morning nature retreat! In Japan\, the birthplace of forest bathing (Shinrin Yoku)\, they celebrate the annual cherry blossom bloom (Sakura) with a practice known as Hanami\, which translates to “contemplate the flowers.” This experience gently invites us to cultivate our attention and sensory awareness\, while noticing the evanescent nature of flowering\, both within and around us. Together\, we will explore our relationships with native wildflowers\, ourselves\, each-other\, and the more-than-human-world. \nYour guide will lead you on a colorful journey through the blossoming spring forest\, weaving mindfulness\, breathwork\, forest bathing and nature therapy together for a restorative morning on some of the trails less traveled at the North Carolina Arboretum. We’ll celebrate the experience in community\, enjoying a wild-foraged tea ceremony and snacks. Bring an open mind and an open heart. All are welcome. Presented through Adult & Continuing Education Programs in collaboration with Asheville Wellness Tours. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nKelly Bruce is a writer\, forest therapy guide and nature connection mentor based in Hendersonville\, North Carolina. Her mission is to help others deepen their connection with nature\, community and Self. Kelly is an Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Certified Guide and Certification Consultant. SUMMARY:Using a Key to ID Wildflowers
DESCRIPTION:Using a Key to ID Wildflowers\nwith Scott Dean \nThursday\, April 10  |  10 am – 1 pm \nBRN + BREG |  Elective \nIdentifying wildflowers can both be an art and a technical field of study. Most popular field guides include some kind of key to help users identify flowers that they see out in nature but learning how to use one can be a challenge. Join Scott Dean on this brand new class on how to use the non-technical keys found in two wildflower field guides: Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide and Wildflowers of the Atlantic Southeast. Also bring your hand lens/jeweler’s loupe to inspect plants up close and we recommend using a 7 – 10x power lens for this class. \nWe will have a few copies of each guide and some hand lenses to borrow but please bring your own if you have them. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nScott Dean was born and raised in the mountains of southern Appalachia\, specifically the coalfields of West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. He developed the original Ecology\, Botany\, and Zoology curricula for the Blue Ridge Naturalist Program\, and has been both a classroom and field instructor with the program since its inception. He has led walks for UNC Asheville and the Cullowhee Native Plants Conference\, been a featured speaker at the Great Smoky Mountain National Park Wildflower program\, and spoken at various social and civic events in the Asheville area over the last twenty years. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount!
