SUMMARY:Book Talk: I Have This Thing for Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Book Talk: I Have This Thing for Flowers\nwith Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn \nin conversation with Tessa Fontaine \nThursday\, August 13  |  5:30 – 7 pm \nRegister Here!\nLocation: Education Center Auditorium \nAt-the-door tickets will be available at a slightly higher price than advance tickets. \nA story of love\, marriage\, and flowers from beloved writer and gardening enthusiast Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn. \nSix months before her wedding\, Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn’s fiancé broke off their engagement. Stunned\, reeling\, and newly uninsured\, Alysia married her friend Sarah in an arrangement that secured them both free health insurance. They moved in together in the midst of the pandemic\, and with time and while tending a garden\, their marriage of convenience grew into a marriage of love. \nIn science\, art\, and mythology\, we cannot help but to see flowers as metaphors for the fleeting nature of youth\, vitality\, and love. It’s easy to casually admire something beautiful\, but it takes a discerning eye to appreciate the effort that went into nourishing and tending to that beauty. In both gardening and relationships\, one cannot expect to fill your garden with flowers if you are unwilling—or unable—to put in the work they need to thrive. In I Have This Thing For Flowers\, Sawchyn does just that\, likening the many flowers she has grown in her gardens to a range of relationships and moments of her life\, reflecting on topics from motherhood to perfumery to scientific illustration. \nCataloguing many of the great romances and loves of her life like an herbarium of flowers preserved from the garden\, Sawchyn examines the kinds of love that can’t be explained. \nAlysia will be joined by fellow author Tessa Fontaine for an in-conversation program. Malaprops will be selling books during the event and book signing will take place after the talk concludes. \nAlysia Li Ying Sawchyn teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Bucknell University. Formerly the editor in chief of The Rumpus\, she has received fellowships from The Kenyon Review and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. Their first essay collection\, A Fish Growing Lungs\, was a finalist for The Believer Book Awards. \nTessa Fontaine is the author of THE ELECTRIC WOMAN: A MEMOIR IN DEATH-DEFYING ACTS (FSG 2018)\, a New York Times Editors’ Choice; Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick\, and best book of the year by Southern Living\, Refinery29\, Amazon Editors’\, and The New York Post.  THE RED GROVE (FSG 2024)\, her debut novel\, was named a best book by Amazon Editors’ and People Magazine and was longlisted for the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize. Other writing can be found in Outside\, The New York Times\, Glamour\, People\, and more. Raised outside San Francisco\, Tessa has taught in jails and prisons\, community centers\, and currently teaches in Warren Wilson’s MFA program. She lives in Asheville\, North Carolina\, with her daughter\, goofy dog and sassy cat. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Book Talk: Chuck Hutchison presents his memoir\, Getting My Hands Dirty in conversation with novelist Elizabeth Kostova
DESCRIPTION:Chuck Hutchison presents his memoir\, Getting My Hands Dirty in conversation with novelist Elizabeth Kostova\nwith Chuck Hutchison \nThursday\, February 26 | 5 – 6:30 pm \nBREG – Elective \nREGISTER HERE \nCopies of the book will be available to purchase at the event \nTracing a journey of commitment\, challenge\, and growth\, a former professional football player reflects on his time at Ohio State under the tutelage of Coach Woody Hayes\, his years in the NFL\, and his unexpected decision to become an expert gardener. Chuck Hutchison knows the meaning of hard work—it’s rooted in every chapter of his life story. Born into humble beginnings in rural Ohio\, he found football in his youth\, which opened doors for him and shaped the trajectory of his life in ways he’d never imagined possible. Under legendary Ohio State coach Woody Hayes\, Hutchison won a national championship with the Buckeyes and learned enduring lessons that served him in the NFL\, the business world\, and beyond. In the face of injuries\, family struggles\, mental health challenges\, and an earlier than expected exit from the NFL\, Hutchison came to rely on three basic principles: curiosity\, confidence\, and conviction. Guided by these foundational ideas\, he discovered new ways to grow and heal\, transforming the land surrounding his home into a garden masterpiece and breaking new ground in his own life\, one shovelful at a time.   \n Getting My Hands Dirty is a candid and inspiring story of transformation\, grit\, and tenacity in football\, business\, and life’s next chapter. Told with authenticity and good humor\, Hutchison’s story is proof that the pursuit of inner peace—and a renewed purpose in life—can be found in the most unexpected of places.    \n“Chuck Hutchison is a terrific model of what it takes to reach your full potential in all that you do.” — Jim Tressel\, former head football coach at The Ohio State University  \nChuck Hutchison is a former National Champion football player for Ohio State University under the legendary Woody Hayes and an NFL veteran. His professional career transitioned from the gridiron to the executive suite\, where he served as an executive for the Green Bay Packers and as a Vice President for a Fortune 500 company\, managing major global accounts including McDonald’s. Throughout his corporate tenure\, Chuck was known for a “No-Excuse” leadership style built on accountability and trust—principles forged on an Ohio dairy farm and refined in the high-stakes environments of professional sports and global supply chains. After facing a profound identity crisis and mental health struggle during his retirement\, Chuck found a transformative “Second Act” in the soil. He is the creator of Bucky’s Run\, an extensive ornamental sanctuary in North Carolina that has been officially recognized and archived by the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Gardens. Chuck lives and gardens in Asheville\, N.C.  \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount!
