The group will then foray on the grounds at the NC Arboretum to collect fresh specimens. We will then return to the class to go over steps involved in fungal identification including the use of dichotomous keys and microscopy. We will discuss interesting ecological information about the specimens we collect and identify. \nJonathan  Horton is Chair of the Biology Department at the University of North Carolina Asheville\, where he has been working and teaching since 2003. He earned a B.S. in Biology from UNC-Chapel Hill\, a M.S in Biology at Appalachian State University and a Ph.D. in Forest Ecology Northern Arizona University.  Jonathan is a plant physiological ecologist\, but wears a lot of hats at UNCA where he teaches Botany\, Plant Physiology\, Mycology\, Forest Ecology\, Desert Ecology\, and non-majors offerings. His research interests are varied and include the characteristics of and impacts from invasive\, non-native species; conservation biology of rare and threatened species and communities\, plant-fungal interactions\, and ecological forest management. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Introduction to Appalachian Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Appalachian Ecology\nwith Dan Lazar \nSaturday\, August 15  |  1 – 3pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nFrom the flood plain of the French Broad River to the summit of Mount Mitchel\, we will explore the diverse ecological communities that make up the Blue Ridge Bioregion. We will learn why spruce trees are found only on the summits of our highest mountains: why the Southern Appalachians are the lungless salamander capital of the world; and how deer and ants determine where trilliums grow. Part illustrated lecture and part on-site field trip\, this class serves as an introduction to all Special Topics in Ecology classes offered through the Blue Ridge Naturalist Program. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. DESCRIPTION:Naturalist Walk and Talk – Parasites\nwith Shane Myers \nFriday\, August 14 |  1 – 3pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nWalk around the Arboretum with our staff naturalists and talk about what we see around us. We might see plants and animals\, and evidence of them going about their lives in our backyard. Topics will be based on what we see and experience and whatever questions that come up\, so every class has the potential to be quite different. \nThis month we will focus on the gall-forming organisms and parasitic organisms of the Arboretum. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. DESCRIPTION:River Systems of the Blue Ridge\nWith Anton DuMars \nFriday\, September 5  |  12 – 4pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nREGISTER HERE \nWater is essential to life but is also a powerful agent of change. Rivers\, through both daily processes and catastrophic floods\, shape Earth’s surface through erosion and sediment transport. In River Systems of the Blue Ridge\, we will investigate how the Broad River changes character and shapes the landscape along its course from the headwaters\, through the Piedmont\, and onto the Atlantic Ocean. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston.
