SUMMARY:Introduction to Appalachian Ecology
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Appalachian Ecology\nwith Dan Lazar \nWedesday\, October 21  |  1 – 3pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Core \nRegister Here!\nFrom the flood plain of the French Broad River to the summit of Mount Mitchel\, we will explore the diverse ecological communities that make up the Blue Ridge Bioregion. We will learn why spruce trees are found only on the summits of our highest mountains: why the Southern Appalachians are the lungless salamander capital of the world; and how deer and ants determine where trilliums grow. Part illustrated lecture and part on-site field trip\, this class serves as an introduction to all Special Topics in Ecology classes offered through the Blue Ridge Naturalist Program. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \n Dan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. SUMMARY:River Systems Field Class
DESCRIPTION:River Systems Field Class\nwith Anton DuMars \nFriday\, October 23  |  11am – 5pm \nBRN – Core \nRegister Here!\nFor the River Systems Field Experience\, we will observe processes and indicators along the Davidson River\, a Blue Ridge tributary of the French Broad catchment basin. We consider channel hierarchy (first order\, second order\, etc.). Our stops include observation and discussions of flow and flood indicators and river forms\, such as cut banks\, point bars\, and flood channels. We observe sediment texture\, sediment load\, and consider sediment source. \n This program provides transportation to and from the class location using our minibus. We will meet at the Arboretum and return to the Arboretum. If you prefer to meet us there\, let us know and we will tell you where to meet.  \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy to moderate trails. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes.
