SUMMARY:Bonsai Exhibit Talk and Tour with Arthur Joura
DESCRIPTION:Bonsai Exhibit Talk and Tour with Arthur Joura\nTuesday\, October 20  |  5:30 – 7pm \nRegister Here!\nJoin Bonsai Curator Arthur Joura on this entertaining and informative after-hours tour of the garden at its peak in autumn\, a fitting showcase for the specimens and the miniature landscapes. As Joura says\, “The two things are one: The garden is designed to elevate the experience of bonsai\, and the bonsai never look better than when they’re on display in the garden.” \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nArthur Joura has been the bonsai curator at the Arboretum since 1992 and oversaw the design and development of the Arboretum’s Bonsai Exhibition Garden. Joura augmented early training in fine art and studied bonsai with some of the leading bonsai authorities in the United States and in Japan. His greatest teachers are trees\, however. His love of hiking and photographing trees in nature has shaped the Arboretum’s collection and firmly rooted it in a regional identify — one that elevates naturalism in art and the use of traditional bonsai species alongside species native to the Southern Appalachian mountains — creating in the process one of the most acclaimed public collections of bonsai in the country. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! Currently\, Hannah is a Botany Technician with the US Forest Service- Pisgah in partnership with The Conservation Corps of NC\, through which her understanding of WNC ecology and land management is ever growing. Hannah loves to slow down\, notice the details\, and revel in the whimsy of the natural world with others. \nBen Warfield graduated from NC State University with a degree in wildlife biology\, where he took many classes centered on species identification and ecosystem measurement. While at NC State\, he helped teach tree identification and wildlife survey techniques during several field courses offered by the university. He currently works as a botany technician for the United States Forest Service and the Conservation Corps of North Carolina\, with most of his work focused on the Pisgah National Forest. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Adventure Scientists Butternut Tree ID Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Adventure Scientists Butternut Tree ID Field Day\nwith ForestHer NC \nThursday\, September 3   |  10am – 12pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nNOTE: This event is led by ForestHer NC\, but NC Arboretum Members receive a discount. To access your membership discount code\, reach out to adulteducation@ncarboretum.org and ask about this class specifically. \n\n\nJoin FHNC and NC Arboretum in the field to put tree identification skills to the test for the Adventure Scientists’ Butternut Tree Project \n\n\n\n\nHelp us save a hidden treasure of the Southern Appalachians! \nForestHer NC is partnering with Adventure Scientists and NC Arboretum for a hands-on Butternut Tree Identification & Field Day at the gorgeous NC Arboretum this September!! \nThe native butternut (or white walnut) is facing a quiet crisis due to a lethal canker disease. Finding healthy\, resilient trees in our forests is the first step toward saving the species—and that’s where you come in! \nAt this field day\, you’ll get your boots on the ground to: Learn how to spot and identify butternut trees in the wild\, understand how to assess tree health and look for signs of genetic resilience\, and practice the data-gathering techniques used by citizen scientists to help researchers map and protect these rare trees. \nIMPORTANT PARTICIPATION DETAILS: To keep our field day running smoothly and ensure everyone can jump right into data collection\, participants are required to sign up for the project and complete Adventure Scientists’ free online training prior to the event! Think of this field day as the perfect\, hands-on practice session to bring that training to life. \nBe sure to bring water\, and dress appropriately for a forested setting (closed toed shoes\, long pants\, etc.). The walk will be easy to moderate\, and relatively short. \nSpace is limited so we can keep our field groups small and hands-on! \n\n\n●  Follow us on Facebook & Instagram! \n●  Join our Adult Education Student Hub on Discord! \n●  Interested in supporting the NC Arboretum more directly? SUMMARY:Winter Buds & Bark
DESCRIPTION:Winter Buds and Bark\nwith Lauren Lampley \nON-SITE  |  Wednesday\, January 22  |  1 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Core Credit \n\nEver wondered how you can identify a tree without its leaves? All tree species have different patterns of bark and leaf/flower buds that can be used to identify them even in winter time. In this program\, we will look closely at the common trees around the NC Arboretum trails and point out specific characteristics of their buds and bark so you can identify them even without their leaves. Recommended materials for this class: A Field Guide to the Trees and Shrubs of the Southern Appalachians by Robert E. Swanson and a naturalist’s hand lens. We have hand lenses to borrow and will only be referencing the book a few times. It is not a required text. \nThis program takes place outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others.
