SUMMARY:History and Archaeology of the Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:History and Archaeology of the Arboretum\nwith Bob and Mary Noel \nFriday\, October 16  |  1 – 4pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nThe land that makes up The North Carolina Arboretum has been home to different human groups over a span of more than 15\,000 years. It has had many uses and been shaped by those who lived here. This walk\, led by archaeologists Bob and Mary Noel\, will give participants a chance to see and hear about past occupants of this land\, and even a little history about how it became the state’s Arboretum. \nBob and Mary Noel both had long careers as archaeologists with the US Forest Service. Bob worked mostly in North Carolina where he recorded thousands of sites on national forest lands here. Most of Mary’s archaeological work was in Idaho and Ohio. Both of them have been active in living history programs as well\, most recently with the Heritage Alliance in Jonesborough\, Tennessee. The Noels now have a consulting firm and still do archaeological survey projects. Mary can be found working at the Arboretum’s Baker Information desk several days a week\, sharing her knowledge of local trails\, gardens and history. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Fall Ecology Walk
DESCRIPTION:Fall Ecology Walk\nwith Dan Lazar \nFriday\, October 9  |  1:30 – 3pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nParticipants will walk through the garden and then head into the Arboretum Forest on easily accessible trails. Along the way we’ll take in autumn wildflowers and the changing hues on autumn’s rich palette of colors apparent on the diverse species of our native trees. We’ll learn how each autumn in Southern Appalachia is different\, due in part to this biological diversity and changing climate conditions over the course of the year. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Dan has a degree in forest biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist program since 2005. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Naturalist Walk and Talk - Spiders
DESCRIPTION:Naturalist Walk and Talk – Spiders\nwith Shane Myers \nSaturday\, October 3  |  1 – 3pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nWalk around the Arboretum with our staff naturalists and talk about what we see around us. We might see plants and animals\, and evidence of them going about their lives in our backyard. Topics will be based on what we see and experience and whatever questions that come up\, so every class has the potential to be quite different. \nThis month we will focus on the Spiders of the Arboretum. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nShane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. Shane currently works for the Adult Education department at the NC Arboretum. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Adventure Scientists Butternut Tree ID Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Adventure Scientists Butternut Tree ID Field Day\nwith ForestHer NC \nThursday\, September 3   |  10am – 12pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nNOTE: This event is led by ForestHer NC\, but NC Arboretum Members receive a discount. To access your membership discount code\, reach out to adulteducation@ncarboretum.org and ask about this class specifically. \n\n\nJoin FHNC and NC Arboretum in the field to put tree identification skills to the test for the Adventure Scientists’ Butternut Tree Project \n\n\n\n\nHelp us save a hidden treasure of the Southern Appalachians! \nForestHer NC is partnering with Adventure Scientists and NC Arboretum for a hands-on Butternut Tree Identification & Field Day at the gorgeous NC Arboretum this September!! \nThe native butternut (or white walnut) is facing a quiet crisis due to a lethal canker disease. Finding healthy\, resilient trees in our forests is the first step toward saving the species—and that’s where you come in! \nAt this field day\, you’ll get your boots on the ground to: Learn how to spot and identify butternut trees in the wild\, understand how to assess tree health and look for signs of genetic resilience\, and practice the data-gathering techniques used by citizen scientists to help researchers map and protect these rare trees. \nIMPORTANT PARTICIPATION DETAILS: To keep our field day running smoothly and ensure everyone can jump right into data collection\, participants are required to sign up for the project and complete Adventure Scientists’ free online training prior to the event! Think of this field day as the perfect\, hands-on practice session to bring that training to life. \nBe sure to bring water\, and dress appropriately for a forested setting (closed toed shoes\, long pants\, etc.). The walk will be easy to moderate\, and relatively short. \nSpace is limited so we can keep our field groups small and hands-on! \n\n\n●  Follow us on Facebook & Instagram! \n●  Join our Adult Education Student Hub on Discord! \n●  Interested in supporting the NC Arboretum more directly? Donate to the ONE Fund here. \nSee all of our classes open for registration here!

SUMMARY:Hemlock Stream Health Hike with Hemlock Restoration Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Hemlock Stream Health Hike with Hemlock Restoration Initiative\nThursday\, July 9  |  5 – 7 pm \nBRN – Elective \nFree for Arboretum Members\, non-members will need to pay the $25 per car gate fee. \nREGISTER HERE \nDid you know that hemlocks are critical for our southern Appalachian stream habitats? Eastern hemlocks shade cold headwaters\, stabilize stream banks\, and protect the insects that trout depend on. When hemlocks decline\, streams warm\, habitat shrinks\, and fisheries suffer. \nThis evening hike will weave you along Bent Creek under healthy hemlocks in an HRI Hemlock Conservation Area. While we hike\, your hike leaders will cover the ecological importance of hemlocks with a focus on their role in stream habitat. We will also cover what is threatening the hemlocks\, what is being done about it\, and more. \nThe hike is a relatively flat 2 mile out-and-back. We will plan to arrive back at our vehicles at 7pm. \nIn case of poor weather\, this hike will be rescheduled to July 15th. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount!
