DESCRIPTION:Leading a Nature Hike 101\nwith Lauren Lampley \nFriday\, August 28  |  10 – 1pm \nBRN – Capstone \nRegister Here!\n  \nLeading a group on a hike in nature comes naturally to some people but for others it is a skill developed over time. In this class we will talk about best practices for how to safely and efficiently lead a group on a hike in nature as well as what planning is necessary before the day of the hike. Students will also do a short 5 minute presentation about a subject of their choice during this class. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. DESCRIPTION:Franklinia Tree Paper Flower Workshop\nwith Cynthia Woodsong \nFriday\, September 4  |  11am – 4pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nJoin naturalist Cynthia Woodsong in this informative and hands-on workshop learning how to create botanically accurate paper flowers and leaves of the unique Franklinia alatamaha\, the beautiful and enigmatic shrub or small tree described by William Bartram in the late 18th century. This workshop starts by joining the Lunch & Learn program led by Jim Costa\, which includes a talk and guided observation of the impressive specimen at the Arboretum.  Following the talk\, workshop participants will use their new knowledge to help guide them in creating paper flowers and leaves on an actual Franklinia branch under Cynthia’s direction. All materials are provided. \nCynthia Woodsong is a North Carolina Master Naturalist with a certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration from the North Carolina Botanical Garden\, UNC Chapel Hill. Her work focuses primarily on making realistic paper replicas of flowering plants native to the southeastern United States and conducting workshops to teach the craft to others. These paper plants are then placed in clay pots or other containers. Cynthia also incorporates paper botanicals in her “3-D botanical plates\,” rendered in watercolor or colored pencil. DESCRIPTION:Franklinia Tree Lunch & Learn\nwith Jim Costa \nFriday\, September 4  |  12 – 1pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nIn 1765 the father-son botanists John and William Bartram\, of Philadelphia\, first came upon a large stand of a remarkable mystery plant in the Tea family growing along the banks of the Altamaha River in Georgia. William later dubbed this “rare and elegant flowering shrub” Franklinia alatamaha\, for their family friend Benjamin Franklin and the site of their discovery. Mysteriously\, Franklinia soon disappeared\, going extinct in nature by the century’s end. It now exists solely in cultivation\, and all specimens today descend from seeds and cuttings taken by the Bartrams and a few other late 18th century collectors. \nJoin Jim Costa and Cynthia Woodsong for this special lunchtime program celebrating the unique Franklinia alatamaha. Jim’s talk will explore the history of the Bartrams’ discovery and the biology and cultivation of Franklinia. An added feature of the program is the opportunity to observe the Arboretum’s magnificent specimen\, guided by Jim and Cynthia. Franklinia is an early fall bloomer\, one happy result of which is a gorgeous juxtaposition of its large\, showy white flowers with the shrub’s reddening fall foliage. If you are interested in checking out the shrub in person before the talk starts\, meet at 11:30am in the parking lot near the cones where Jim and Cynthia will guide participants through an observation checklist highlighting attributes of the shrub. The group will then walk up the hill to the Education Center and the talk will take place in the classroom. Lunch is not provided but students are welcome and encouraged to purchase food from the Arbor Eatery or bring their own lunch. \nThis is a special Franklinia celebration not to be missed. \nThis program takes place in the classroom with an optional portion outdoors. An evolutionary biologist and Darwin and Wallace scholar\, Jim’s most recent books include Radical by Nature: The Revolutionary Life of Alfred Russel Wallace\, Darwin and the Art of Botany: Observations on the Curious World of Plants (with Bobbi Angell)\, and The Descent of Man: An Annotated Edition of Darwin’s Classic Work (with Elizabeth Yale). Jim’s honors include the Alfred Russel Wallace Medal and the Stephen Jay Gould Prize of the Society for the Study of Evolution\, and research fellowships at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study\, the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin\, the LuEsther T. SUMMARY:Salamander Diversity in the Southern Appalachians
DESCRIPTION:Salamander Diversity in the Southern Appalachians\nwith Patrick Brannon \nSaturday\, September 5  |  1 – 3:30pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nThe southern Appalachians are one of the most biologically diverse regions in the temperate world. More species of salamanders exist in these mountains than anywhere else\, and nowhere are they more abundant. Participants will be presented a lecture focusing on biology and ecology of salamanders\, biogeography\, reasons for the enormous diversity in this region\, and local threats to species diversity. Afterwards\, students will analyze and graph data to observe how different species coexist in streams. Weather permitting\, we will then search the Arboretum grounds to observe species in the wild. \nPatrick Brannon is an independent naturalist and educator. He holds a M.S. in Biology from Appalachian State University\, and has performed research on the ecology of salamanders and small mammals. DESCRIPTION:Blooms in a Hoop: Beginner Embroidery Workshop\nwith JeanAnne Taylor \nThursday\, September 10  |  12 – 4pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nStudents will learn basic techniques of hand embroidery\, as well as information on needle sizes\, types of floss\, and appropriate fabric. I will demonstrate how to do the embroidery stitches\, then work one on one if necessary for students to understand. I will provide a supply kit for the students. They will have a finished (or mostly finished) project to take home. \nJeanAnn Taylor loves to be creative with words\, watercolors\, hooks\, yarn\, dancing\, gardening\, fabric\, and thread.
