SUMMARY:Awakening Creativity — An Introductory Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Awakening Creativity — An Introductory Workshop\nWith Catherine Willows \nThursday\, August 27  |  9:30 – 11:30 am \nRegister Here!\n  \nCreativity lives innately within us all—our natural capacity to imagine\, envision new possibilities\, and bring fresh energy into our lives. In this two-hour introductory workshop\, you’ll be invited into a different kind of art-making: not focused on skill or product\, but on expression from within. \nHeld in sacred space and in communion with nature\, we’ll explore intuitive painting\, journaling\, and reflective practices to quiet the mind and awaken your inner creative self—helping you see what may not have been fully acknowledged\, and allowing inspiration\, clarity\, and joy to arise. \nMany participants are surprised by what unfolds—the unexpected that emerges through the process itself. This introductory session lays the foundation for future workshops. \nNo art experience is needed—just an open spirit and a willingness to explore and students are encouraged to bring their journals with them if they would like to. \nCatherine Willows is a Registered Nurse\, Certified Functional Medicine Health Coach\, and Transformational Creativity Coach\, and founder of Willows Coaching and Consulting. While holding sacred space\, she guides adults in awakening their inner creativity — moving beyond the demands of daily life into greater flow\, self-discovery\, and joy through intuitive art-making processes. Catherine believes creativity and our connection to the natural world are deeply interwoven  — both vital pillars of wellbeing\, supporting nervous system regulation and inner equanimity\, and together essential for living a meaningful\, embodied life aligned with purpose and authentic expression. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Using Hedgerows in your Garden Design
DESCRIPTION:Using Hedgerows in your Garden Design\nwith Nina Shippen \nSaturday\, September 19  |  10 am – 12 pm \nBREG – Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nThis class looks at how you can transform your property lines from tangles of invasive plants and poison ivy into environmental powerhouses with four season beauty. We will review the historic use of hedgerows and their ecologic value\, provide appropriate shrubs and trees that may be used in a variety of growing conditions\, and detail the process of planting\, building\, and maintaining your hedgerow. Our privet hedges that delineate property lines can be interpreted as modern expressions of the hedgerows that people have used throughout history to define property boundaries\, enclose livestock\, and control erosion. \nNina Shippen practices residential landscape and garden design through her company Hidden Road Landscape Design\, which focuses on coupling the principles of healing gardens with sound ecologic practices to create satisfying gardens for her clients. A graduate of the landscape design program at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies\, she has lived and gardened in Transylvania County since 2005. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Long-term Effects of Hurricane Helene on Southern Appalachian Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Long-term Effects of Hurricane Helene on Southern Appalachian Ecosystems\nwith Dan Lazar \nWednesday\, September 23  |  1 pm – 3 pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nIt has been two years since hurricane Helene ravaged the ecosystems of Western North Carolina\, uprooting trees and causing major flooding along mountain rivers and streams. How have the animals and plants of the affected areas responded to this historic event?  Where do songbirds go to escape hurricane winds?  How can fish and aquatic invertebrates tolerate such massive flooding?  What factors determine which trees are toppled and which survive?  We will investigate the long-term effects of Hurricane Helene on the natural plant and animal communities of Western North Carolina during this illustrated lecture followed by a short walk on Arboretum grounds to observe the ongoing recovery of hurricane-damaged areas. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Dan has a degree in forest biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry and has been an instructor in the Blue Ridge Naturalist program since 2005. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! SUMMARY:Bats of the NC Arboretum with Mist Netting Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Bats of the NC Arboretum with Mist Netting Demonstration\nwith Megan Zeger and team \nFriday\, September 25  |  7 – 9pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nThe NC Arboretum hosts a variety of bat species in our forests. Join a group of biologists for a presentation about the recent acoustic bat study they conducted on the Arboretum’s property this summer and which species they found. Then\, once the presentation is over\, join the crew out in the woods for a mist netting demonstration if weather allows. During this class\, you will learn all about the different species of bats that call the NC Arboretum home\, how biologists collect data about bat presence in a location using microphones\, and even might have the chance to see live\, wild bats up close and personal! \nParticipants will not be handling the bats\, and the bats will only be handled by the trained biologists. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nMegan Zeger is a graduate student at Virginia Tech studying four imperiled bat species in the Asheville\, NC area. She has been studying and working with wildlife in the southern Appalachians since 2018 when she started her undergraduate program in wildlife conservation. She has been working with bats since 2022 and has done research on various species in Maryland\, North Carolina\, Utah\, Virginia\, West Virginia\, and Wyoming. \nJessica Davey is a wildlife biologist currently working for Virginia Tech’s Conservation and Management Institute. Having graduated from Lees-McRae College in 2021\, she has since worked primarily as a bat researcher in six different states. Her experience ranges from Mist netting and acoustic surveys to conducting hibernacula and white-nose swabbing in the caves of Florida. She hopes to continue gaining as much knowledge as she can about the world’s only flying mammal. \nKatie Kadkovsky is a recent Biology graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill. While there\, she worked in molecular biology labs at Chapel Hill and Duke studying fungi. Katie was introduced to the bat world at UNC-CH via acoustic surveys of NC’s sky islands. Currently\, she is a wildlife biologist with Virginia Tech CMI helping characterize the presence of tri-colored bats in the greater Asheville area to support conservation practices. \nLiam Jawish is a recent graduate from Virginia Tech! He is currently working as a wildlife biologist surveying bats in Asheville\, NC. He previously worked on Jaguar surveys in Belize\, CA\, and bear work in central Virginia. \nLucy Kraus is a wildlife biologist with the Conservation Management Institute at Virginia Tech. She graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2026 with a degree in environmental science. In the past\, she has worked in prescribed fire and environmental education. \n●  Members: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount!
