DESCRIPTION:Naturalist Walk and Talk\nwith Shane Myers \nFriday\, February 13  |  1 – 3pm \nBRN –  Elective \nREGISTER HERE \nWalk around the Arboretum with our staff naturalists and talk about what we see around us. We might see plants and animals\, and evidence of them going about their lives in our backyard. Topics will be based on what we see and experience and whatever questions that come up\, so every class has the potential to be quite different. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nShane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. DESCRIPTION:Geology of the Blue Ridge I\nwith Anton DuMars \nFriday\, February 13  |  12 – 4pm \nBRN – Core \nREGISTER HERE \nThis is the first class of a two-part Geology course that explores the geologic history of the Southern Appalachian Mountains with lecture presentations\, discussions and self-guided explorations in the field. The course begins with a discussion of the earth’s interior and plate tectonics\, progresses to a model for the formation of the southern Appalachians and then describes the surficial processes that generate the current mountain topography. Discussion will also include an overview of geologic processes that affect these mountains today: earthquakes\, mass movements and floods. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. DESCRIPTION:LET THERE BE LIGHT!!: Mosaic Glass Block Lamp Workshop\nwith Linda Pannullo \nSaturday\, February 7  |  10 – 4pm \nREGISTER HERE \nBring some light into these short days!! Convert a 7″ Glass Block into a stunning mosaic table lamp. Great class for beginners – you will learn basic mosaic skills using glass nippers\, running pliers and glass scorer. The afternoon will be spent covering both sides of the block. Grout if preferred\, will be done at home and there will be a link to a grouting demo. Class comes with a complete kit that contains glass block\, light for the inside\, a rainbow array of cathedral glass cut into 3″ x 1″ pieces\, handout\, glue\, paintbrush\, popsicle sticks\, grout\, glass embellishments and extra glass for practice. All tools will be provided for the class. \nLinda Pannullo is a local mosaic artist that uses both traditional and contemporary for my art. Her work ranges from the whimsical to fine art\, from eclectic materials to the traditional stained glass and 3D sculptures. She loves to teach and currently instructs at the John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown\, NC\, Olive’s Porch\, the Purple Crayon and Trackside Studios in Asheville. She is very fond of FUNctional Art and love bringing new folks into the mosaic world. DESCRIPTION:Botanical Drawing for Beginners \nwith Camille Daunno  \nTuesday\, January 6 |  10:30 am – 1 pm and/or  \nTuesday\, January 13  | 10:30 am – 1 pm  \nREGISTER HERE \n(Register for both sessions or a single session)  \n In this beginner level class\, learn several drawing techniques including line shading and pen and ink. Students will also experiment with different techniques to improve your own personal style as well as discussing contour\, contrast\, and texture in Botanical Drawing. All materials and supplies will be provided for this class and students will take home their in-progress or finished artwork.  \n Camille Daunno is a retired Art Teacher with an undergraduate degree in Fine Art with graduate work in Textile Design. She worked in NYC as a designer for 10 years designing Fabric and wallpaper. DESCRIPTION:Winter Birding at Lake Junaluska\nWith Shane Myers \nSaturday\, November 15  |  8 am – 12 pm \nBRN – Elective \nREGISTER HERE \nDuck migration typically peaks in late November\, making it a good time to go looking for them!  In this class\, we’ll meet at Lake Junaluska\, and walk the 2.3 mile loop\, stopping to look for birds along the way with binoculars and a spotting scope! \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nShane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. DESCRIPTION:Botanical Latin for Gardeners\nwith Phil Roudebush \nThursday\, November 6  |  1 – 3 pm \nBREG – Core \nREGISTER HERE \nIt is easy to fall for the poetry and charm of common plant names. Who can resist the romance of plants with names like “Loves-lie bleeding\,” “forget-me-not” or “morning-noon-and-night”? However\, when understood and used appropriately\, botanical Latin can help in understanding the origin of a plant or important characteristics such as its form\, color\, shape or size. Based on the book Latin for Gardeners\, this class will explore the reasons to use Latin for plant names and how to use botanical Latin to improve gardening efforts. Who says Latin is a dead language? Instructor Phil Roudebush enlivens this core class and gives students an essential tool for better understanding botanical nomenclature and taxonomy. \nPhil Roudebush is a native of Indiana and lived in Colorado\, Missouri\, Mississippi and Kansas before moving to North Carolina in 2015. He is a retired veterinarian who has worked in small animal practice\, taught in several veterinary schools and did research\, product development and technical communication in the animal health industry. Phil has maintained a large vegetable garden\, herb garden\, pumpkin patch\, water garden and a 30-acre native grass hay pasture. Join Jeff in this hands-on class to learn how to prune common shrub species so that they can continue to thrive and grow in your landscape. Students will actively practice pruning some shrubs on property during this class so be prepared to be outside the entire class time. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nJeff Seitz was the owner and operator of Appalachian Creek Nursery for 23 years and has been designing\, installing\, and managing landscapes in the Asheville area his entire life. Jeff has been on the board of directors of Greenworks\, Black Mountain Chamber of Commerce\, Black Mountain Beautification Committee\, and Asheville Home Builders. He is a licensed landscape contractor and holds certifications with energy efficient landscapes as well as residential rain gardens. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. As Joura says\, “The two things are one: The garden is designed to elevate the experience of bonsai\, and the bonsai never look better than when they’re on display in the garden.” Deciduous trees in the collection will likely be ablaze with the colors of the season! \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nArthur Joura has been the bonsai curator at the Arboretum since 1992 and oversaw the design and development of the Arboretum’s Bonsai Exhibition Garden. Joura augmented early training in fine art and studied bonsai with some of the leading bonsai authorities in the United States and in Japan. His greatest teachers are trees\, however. Along the way we’ll take in autumn wildflowers and the changing hues on autumn’s rich palette of colors apparent on the diverse species of our native trees. We’ll learn how each autumn in Southern Appalachia is different\, due in part to this biological diversity and changing climate conditions over the course of the year. \nThis program takes place fully outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. She is a certified yoga therapist\, mind-body specialist\, and meditation instructor. Jenne is also an environmental educator and spent her undergrad years working and studying under the direct mentorship of Thomas Berry and Joseph Cornell at the Center for Education\, Imagination\, and the Natural World\, continuing her studies in nature-based rites of passage with the School of Lost Borders and the Earth-Based Institute. DESCRIPTION:Geology of the Blue Ridge Field Class\nwith Anton DuMars \nThursday\, October 16  |  12 – 4 pm \nBRN – Geology Core  \nREGISTER HERE \nOn this Field Experience\, we will observe and interpret evidence of Appalachian mountain-building events. Participants can put their hands on a 380+/- million-year-old pluton and observe their post-uplift weathering\, jointing\, and exfoliation. In addition\, participants observe and interpret river processes\, transport\, and depositional environments of sediments derived from up-gradient sources. The experience includes on-site geologic map reading and interpretation. \nThis off-site program has stops in the Pisgah Forest near Brevard NC along The Pisgah Highway including Daniel Ridge and the Davidson River. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy to moderate trails. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes.
