This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. DESCRIPTION:Bonsai Curator’s Talk & Tour\nwith Arthur Joura \nTuesday\, October 21 |  5:30 – 7pm \nREGISTER HERE \nAccompany Bonsai Curator Arthur Joura on this after-hours tour of the garden for a personal and informative overview of the art of bonsai and the Arboretum’s own creative approach to it. As Joura says\, “The two things are one: The garden is designed to elevate the experience of bonsai\, and the bonsai never look better than when they’re on display in the garden.” Deciduous trees in the collection will likely be ablaze with the colors of the season! \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nArthur Joura has been the bonsai curator at the Arboretum since 1992 and oversaw the design and development of the Arboretum’s Bonsai Exhibition Garden. Joura augmented early training in fine art and studied bonsai with some of the leading bonsai authorities in the United States and in Japan. His greatest teachers are trees\, however. Along the way we’ll take in autumn wildflowers and the changing hues on autumn’s rich palette of colors apparent on the diverse species of our native trees. We’ll learn how each autumn in Southern Appalachia is different\, due in part to this biological diversity and changing climate conditions over the course of the year. \nThis program takes place fully outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. This session begins with a series of gentle and easy Qigong movements to clear the mind\, release tension\, support the body and brain’s natural healing processes\, and generate a sense of inner calm. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nJenne Sluder\, MA C-IAYT holds a Master’s in Transpersonal Psychology: Ecopsychology from Naropa University. She is a certified yoga therapist\, mind-body specialist\, and meditation instructor. Jenne is also an environmental educator and spent her undergrad years working and studying under the direct mentorship of Thomas Berry and Joseph Cornell at the Center for Education\, Imagination\, and the Natural World\, continuing her studies in nature-based rites of passage with the School of Lost Borders and the Earth-Based Institute. DESCRIPTION:Geology of the Blue Ridge Field Class\nwith Anton DuMars \nThursday\, October 16  |  12 – 4 pm \nBRN – Geology Core  \nREGISTER HERE \nOn this Field Experience\, we will observe and interpret evidence of Appalachian mountain-building events. Participants can put their hands on a 380+/- million-year-old pluton and observe their post-uplift weathering\, jointing\, and exfoliation. In addition\, participants observe and interpret river processes\, transport\, and depositional environments of sediments derived from up-gradient sources. The experience includes on-site geologic map reading and interpretation. \nThis off-site program has stops in the Pisgah Forest near Brevard NC along The Pisgah Highway including Daniel Ridge and the Davidson River. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy to moderate trails. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. DESCRIPTION:Greenman Sculptured Plant Pots\nwith Eileen Bos \nSunday\, September 28  |  10 – 2 pm \nREGISTER HERE \nUsing polymer clay\, custom molds that I’ve created\, rubber sculpting tools\, acrylic paints\, terra cotta plant pots\, glass eyes\, and moss\, students will learn step by step how to sculpt & paint a Greenman (or Greenwoman!) and utilize that sculpture on a plant pot. All materials will be provided for this hands-on program. Feel free to bring a lunch or snack for a small break in the middle of the class time while the clay is baking. \nEileen Bos is a multimedia sculpture artist from NY\, with nearly 40 years of self-taught art experience. She began drawing at the age of 3 and sculpting at age 4. Discussion topics will include Helene’s flooding related to other historical floods in Asheville\, how climate change contributed to the impact\, the other atmospheric events leading up to the Hurricane\, and how the recent North Fork Reservoir improvements prevented an even more serious disaster. \nParticipants will then head over to the Climate Reference Network (CRN) station on campus (weather permitting)\, where scientists from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information will describe the history and purpose of the CRN station\, the instruments used to measure the weather\, and answer any questions. Note that attendees will drive to the weather station about a half mile away\, but a small amount of walking is necessary to access the equipment from the parking area. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nDr. Carl Schreck is a research scientist with the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies at North Carolina State University. SUMMARY:Papermaking with Invasive Species
DESCRIPTION:Papermaking with Invasive Species\nwith Alyssa Sacora \nSaturday\, September 20  |  10 am – 4 pm \nREGISTER HERE \nPlants are all around us and some can be problematic in the landscape. What if instead of seeing these plants as a burden\, we look at them through the lens of craft and make some materials for our artwork? \nIn this one day workshop\, we will go through the process of turning Japanese Stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum) into paper. Working with dried plant material removed from the Arboretum’s landscape\, we will cut\, cook\, and pulp these plant fibers\, mix them with cotton\, and pull sheets of paper that can be used for writing\, drawing\, and paper arts. \nParticipants will get hands-on with each step of the process and make enough paper to take a small stack home. Reference materials will be provided for future papermaking explorations. \nAlyssa Sacora is a crafts person exploring plant-based mediums in the form of papermaking\, book arts\, basketry and natural dyes. She finds inspiration by observing relationships in the wider world. To reduce her human footprint and encourage creative thinking\, she primarily works with locally available and repurposed natural materials. Leaves\, vines and bark from iris\, daylily\, kudzu\, okra\, tulip poplar and willow leaves are often combined with salvaged cotton fabrics to create her palette. Her artistic pursuits are directly related to her lifestyle choices with reciprocity and mindfulness as a guiding force. In addition to and in support of her craft\, she tends a 3-acre homestead in Western North Carolina with her husband\, Adam. They grow fruits and vegetables\, medicinal herbs\, and art plants. They use solar electric and solar thermal systems for electricity and heating\, collect rain water and continuously look to design their space with sustainability in mind. DESCRIPTION:Hawkwatching at Grandfather Mountain\nwith Lauren Lampley \nWednesday\, September 17  |  10:30 am – 3 pm \nBRN – Elective \nREGISTER HERE \nEver wonder where our migratory hawks go in the wintertime? Join Arboretum and Grandfather Mountain staff on a day filled with scanning the skies for these migratory birds. There is a chance to see hundreds of migratory hawks as they fly by the mountain on their way south for the winter. During this day we will also talk about the different types of hawks and other birds of prey that migrate following the Appalachian Mountains. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow rocky paths onto the Linville Peak area. Those uncomfortable with crossing the bridge can set up a chair on the building side of the bridge but would not be present for the main counting. Bring your own chair or cushion to sit on the rocks and your binoculars or spotting scope if you have one. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time with no shade. Bring a lunch and/or snacks or plan to leave the group to purchase food from Mildred’s Grill located at the Museum down the mountain a bit. \nGrandfather Mountain has been participating in HawkWatch for 17 years from the Linville Peak area near the swinging bridge. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. The course begins with a discussion of the earth’s interior and plate tectonics\, progresses to a model for the formation of the southern Appalachians and then describes the surficial processes that generate the current mountain topography. Discussion will also include an overview of geologic processes that affect these mountains today: earthquakes\, mass movements and floods. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. Beginners and longtime meditators and painters welcome.  All materials are provided. \nGayle Ray is a teacher\, healer\, and creator. She has been meditating for over 30 years and sees it as pivotal to her growth and expansion. This 2.5 hour journey includes a reflective walk through nature where we take periodic pauses to engage our senses with the natural world. We then take time to bring awareness inward and explore our individual ecosystems with a gentle yoga practice. These practices cultivate deeper awareness\, connectivity\, and reverence for the interconnections of life. \nBring your yoga mat and a blanket to put between the ground and your mat but if you don’t have your own we can have a set you can borrow for the class. \nThis program will take place outside and will include a 3 mile total walk on easy/moderate dirt trails. DESCRIPTION:Paths of Enlichenment\nWith Laura Boggess \nFriday\, August 8  |  1 – 4pm \nBRN – Elective  \nREGISTER HERE \nJoin Laura for an enlightening (en-lichen-ing!) 3-hour session about lichen lifestyles and the insights they offer. We’ll begin in the classroom with an introduction to lichen identification\, their roles in ecosystems\, and traditional uses as medicine and natural dyes. Then we’ll take a slow observant walk–on lichen time–through the Arboretum grounds to practice field identification and deepen our connection with these remarkable beings. In the final portion of the session\, we’ll reflect on the deeper insights lichens offer in a time of global transformation. As we face what Joanna Macy calls “the Great Unraveling\,” marked by biodiversity loss\, economic instability\, and climate change—lichens can inspire us to reimagine resilience through cooperation\, interconnection and attentive presence.  No prior lichen knowledge is necessary. If you have a hand-lens\, please bring it. If you don’t\, we have some to lend. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLaura Boggess is a cliff ecologist\, lichenologist\, and faculty member at Mars Hill University. Her deepest passion lies in exploring cliff ecosystems—both as a scientist and a climber—and she finds continual inspiration in the quiet beauty and resilience of lichens. Through her work as a quantitative ecologist\, she studies how humans impact cliff and lichen communities in the Southern Appalachians. In this class we’ll focus on many of the various species found here\, their specialized habitats and life cycles\, and threats to their existence. Class participants will also have a chance to meet in the classroom\, a few live amphibian residents of our mountain region. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits.
