DESCRIPTION:Naturalist Walk and Talk – Parasites\nwith Shane Myers \nFriday\, August 14 |  1 – 3pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nWalk around the Arboretum with our staff naturalists and talk about what we see around us. We might see plants and animals\, and evidence of them going about their lives in our backyard. Topics will be based on what we see and experience and whatever questions that come up\, so every class has the potential to be quite different. \nThis month we will focus on the gall-forming organisms and parasitic organisms of the Arboretum. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nShane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. DESCRIPTION: Mosaic Mirror Workshop\nwith Linda Panulla \nFriday\, August 14  |  12 – 4pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nAll levels welcome! Learn basic mosaic techniques  and create a piece of art to embellish your home.  Instructor will provide 12″ substrate with an 8″ mirror.  Students will decorate the 2″ border with glass\, tile and other embellishments.  All materials\, tools\, adhesives\, physical handouts provided.  Students may also bring jewelry\, special items to add to their mirror. \nLinda Pannullo is a local mosaic artist that uses both traditional and contemporary for my art. Her work ranges from the whimsical to fine art\, from eclectic materials to the traditional stained glass and 3D sculptures. She loves to teach and currently instructs at the John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown\, NC\, Olive’s Porch\, the Purple Crayon and Trackside Studios in Asheville. She is very fond of FUNctional Art and love bringing new folks into the mosaic world. DESCRIPTION:Book Talk: I Have This Thing for Flowers\nwith Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn \nin conversation with Tessa Fontaine \nThursday\, August 13  |  5:30 – 7 pm \nRegister Here!\nLocation: Education Center Auditorium \nAt-the-door tickets will be available at a slightly higher price than advance tickets. \nA story of love\, marriage\, and flowers from beloved writer and gardening enthusiast Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn. \nSix months before her wedding\, Alysia Li Ying Sawchyn’s fiancé broke off their engagement. Stunned\, reeling\, and newly uninsured\, Alysia married her friend Sarah in an arrangement that secured them both free health insurance. They moved in together in the midst of the pandemic\, and with time and while tending a garden\, their marriage of convenience grew into a marriage of love. \nIn science\, art\, and mythology\, we cannot help but to see flowers as metaphors for the fleeting nature of youth\, vitality\, and love. It’s easy to casually admire something beautiful\, but it takes a discerning eye to appreciate the effort that went into nourishing and tending to that beauty. In both gardening and relationships\, one cannot expect to fill your garden with flowers if you are unwilling—or unable—to put in the work they need to thrive. In I Have This Thing For Flowers\, Sawchyn does just that\, likening the many flowers she has grown in her gardens to a range of relationships and moments of her life\, reflecting on topics from motherhood to perfumery to scientific illustration. \nCataloguing many of the great romances and loves of her life like an herbarium of flowers preserved from the garden\, Sawchyn examines the kinds of love that can’t be explained. \nAlysia will be joined by fellow author Tessa Fontaine for an in-conversation program. Malaprops will be selling books during the event and book signing will take place after the talk concludes. \nAlysia Li Ying Sawchyn teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Bucknell University. Formerly the editor in chief of The Rumpus\, she has received fellowships from The Kenyon Review and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. Their first essay collection\, A Fish Growing Lungs\, was a finalist for The Believer Book Awards. \nTessa Fontaine is the author of THE ELECTRIC WOMAN: A MEMOIR IN DEATH-DEFYING ACTS (FSG 2018)\, a New York Times Editors’ Choice; Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers pick\, and best book of the year by Southern Living\, Refinery29\, Amazon Editors’\, and The New York Post.  THE RED GROVE (FSG 2024)\, her debut novel\, was named a best book by Amazon Editors’ and People Magazine and was longlisted for the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize. DESCRIPTION:Geology of the Blue Ridge I\nWith Anton DuMars \nThursday\, August 13  |  12 – 4pm \nBRN – Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nThis is the first class of a two-part Geology course that explores the geologic history of the Southern Appalachian Mountains with lecture presentations\, discussions and self-guided explorations in the field. The course begins with a discussion of the earth’s interior and plate tectonics\, progresses to a model for the formation of the southern Appalachians and then describes the surficial processes that generate the current mountain topography. Discussion will also include an overview of geologic processes that affect these mountains today: earthquakes\, mass movements and floods. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. The course is a springboard from which students can later explore gardening topics in more depth\, such as gardening on slopes\, managing stormwater\, creating hedgerows\, invasive plants\, and grappling with native vs. exotic controversies. \nNina Shippen practices residential landscape and garden design through her company Hidden Road Landscape Design\, which focuses on coupling the principles of healing gardens with sound ecologic practices to create satisfying gardens for her clients. DESCRIPTION:Building Living Soil\nwith Everest Holmes \nFriday\, August 7  |  1 – 2:30 pm \nBREG – Soil Health Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nJoin this informative and hands-on session to learn about how to build soil biology in your area and what makes up a soil ecosystem. During the class\, you will look at images of real living soil samples and learn how to interpret what you see on the slide. Everest will also discuss soil as a living ecosystem and what the soil food web is made of. The hands-on portion will include some demonstrations about aggregate stability and infiltration of rainwater. \nEverest Holmes is a soil health educator\, farmsteader\, and product developer focused on the native biology that drives fertile\, resilient growing systems. His work centers on practical\, observation-based soil diagnostics paired with hands-on demonstrations. He helps students use their senses to connect with soil\, structure\, nutrient cycling\, water dynamics and plant performance. Everest regularly teaches and develops programming on soil ecology\, compost systems\, and regenerative practices\, with a special emphasis on making the soil food web visible through live microscopy. Everest is the Co‑founder of GROZOME and serves as Head of Product Development. He holds a B.A. in Outdoor Leadership\, is a Certified Permaculture Designer\, and a Certified Soil Food Web Lab Tech. DESCRIPTION: Intro to Interpretation for Naturalists\nwith Lauren Lampley \nFriday\, July 31  |  10 – 1pm \nBRN – Capstone \nREGISTER HERE \nInterpretation\, at its core\, is the act of sharing the meaning of something we are seeing or observing. In the educational lens\, outdoor interpretation is a method of teaching mostly used by rangers and educators in parks throughout the US. We will go over Freeman Tilden’s Principles of Interpretation and how naturalists might use them to educate people about the natural world. This class is the reformatted Natural History Interpretation capstone class that is part of our Blue Ridge Naturalist Certification of Merit curriculum and qualifies for credit toward the BRN certification. Anyone can join this class and it is no longer limited to just BRN students at the end of their studies. \nTwo different types of tickets are available for this class: in-person full price tickets and discounted virtual only tickets. Those attending virtually will be able to attend the lecture part of the class but will miss some application of the aspects of interpretation when the in-person class goes outside. \nFor in-person attendees: This program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. In this class we will discuss many of the fish species found in the mountain region and learn about their classification\, habitat\, life cycles\, and their identifying features. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. DESCRIPTION:Hemlock Stream Health Hike with Hemlock Restoration Initiative\nThursday\, July 9  |  5 – 7 pm \nBRN – Elective \nFree for Arboretum Members\, non-members will need to pay the $25 per car gate fee. \nREGISTER HERE \nDid you know that hemlocks are critical for our southern Appalachian stream habitats? Eastern hemlocks shade cold headwaters\, stabilize stream banks\, and protect the insects that trout depend on. When hemlocks decline\, streams warm\, habitat shrinks\, and fisheries suffer. \nThis evening hike will weave you along Bent Creek under healthy hemlocks in an HRI Hemlock Conservation Area. While we hike\, your hike leaders will cover the ecological importance of hemlocks with a focus on their role in stream habitat. We will also cover what is threatening the hemlocks\, what is being done about it\, and more. \nThe hike is a relatively flat 2 mile out-and-back. We will plan to arrive back at our vehicles at 7pm. \nIn case of poor weather\, this hike will be rescheduled to July 15th. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. DESCRIPTION:Rewilding Through Writing\nwith Katherine Saul and Alli Marshall \nSaturday\, June 27  |  10am – 4pm \nREGISTER HERE \nIn this one-day workshop we will explore our connection to nature through creative writing and art making. By aligning with the natural world we’re able to experience calm\, peace\, and awareness of our own intuition. Principles of forest bathing\, mindfulness\, and creative play reveal deep wells of inspiration to be expressed through art and writing. \nLed by Katherine Saul and Alli Marshall\, this workshop is for writers and creatives of all backgrounds and levels of experience. While writing will be our main creative modality\, no writing needs to be “good” — only self-expressive. Sharing is optional (though very much encouraged). \nBring a favorite pen and notebook if you have one — but writing and art materials will provided. The class will take place both indoors and outside. \nKatherine Saul has been a middle school educator for 20 years and has been a certified Inward & Artward creative facilitator since 2024. She believes in writing as a means to build understanding of ourselves\, each other\, and the worlds we live in.  When she’s not building creative communities\, you’ll find her with her dogs in the water\, on a trail\, or in the garden. \nAlli Marshall is a writer and artist based in Asheville. DESCRIPTION:Gardening on Slopes\nwith Nina Shippen \nSaturday\, June 27  |  10 am – 12 pm \nBREG – EcoGardening Core \nREGISTER HERE \nGardeners who don’t have to deal with slopes in Western North Carolina are a rarity. Most of us must manage slopes in our landscape planning and planting. Left unattended\, slopes can become hazardous eyesores with ever-worsening erosion that threatens the structures\, plants\, roadways and stream beds below. Designer Nina Shippen shares methods for assessing slopes\, remedies to prevent and correct erosion\, and reviews useful plants for slopes. When to call for professional engineering or construction interventions will also be covered. Participants are invited to send photos in advance of this onsite class to include in discussion. \nNina Shippen practices residential landscape and garden design through her company Hidden Road Landscape Design\, which focuses on coupling the principles of healing gardens with sound ecologic practices to create satisfying gardens for her clients. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. DESCRIPTION:LET THERE BE LIGHT!!: Mosaic Glass Block Lamp Workshop\nwith Linda Pannullo \nFriday\, June 19  |  10 – 4pm \nREGISTER HERE \nBring some light into these short days!! Convert a 7″ Glass Block into a stunning mosaic table lamp. Great class for beginners – you will learn basic mosaic skills using glass nippers\, running pliers and glass scorer. The afternoon will be spent covering both sides of the block. Grout if preferred\, will be done at home and there will be a link to a grouting demo. Class comes with a complete kit that contains glass block\, light for the inside\, a rainbow array of cathedral glass cut into 3″ x 1″ pieces\, handout\, glue\, paintbrush\, popsicle sticks\, grout\, glass embellishments and extra glass for practice. All tools will be provided for the class. \nLinda Pannullo is a local mosaic artist that uses both traditional and contemporary for my art. Her work ranges from the whimsical to fine art\, from eclectic materials to the traditional stained glass and 3D sculptures. She loves to teach and currently instructs at the John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown\, NC\, Olive’s Porch\, the Purple Crayon and Trackside Studios in Asheville. She is very fond of FUNctional Art and love bringing new folks into the mosaic world. The course is a springboard from which students can later explore gardening topics in more depth\, such as gardening on slopes\, managing stormwater\, creating hedgerows\, invasive plants\, and grappling with native vs. exotic controversies. \nNina Shippen practices residential landscape and garden design through her company Hidden Road Landscape Design\, which focuses on coupling the principles of healing gardens with sound ecologic practices to create satisfying gardens for her clients. This is a great intro course to anyone looking to learn more about printmaking or for a fun experience with art to take home. Relief printing is a reduction process\, carving out an image onto a stamp. Erika will teach you how to make a design\, transfer it to the block\, and how to carve it. Then you will get to print your block onto tea towels with her guidance. You will make a unique work of art and get to take home your tea towel and block. \nErika Busse moved to Asheville in 2017 after graduating from the University of Alabama with degrees in art and business. She is a small business owner of her full time artist business\, sharing mountain inspired painting and printmaking with the world. DESCRIPTION:Advanced Tree ID Trek\nwith Lauren Lampley and Shane Myers \nThursday\, June 18  |  10am – 4pm \nREGISTER HERE \nWant to take your Tree ID skills to the next level? Join Lauren and Shane on an all-day hike around the NC Arboretum to try to find as many different tree species as possible. The focus of this program will be to find some individual trees we have on old maps and document species and their locations within our forest. \nWe will be outside on trails all day and will be eating a picnic lunch while we are out in the field. Portable toilets will be available periodically throughout the day\, but no physical restroom buildings will be available except at the beginning and the end of the class. \nThis program will take place outside and will be on moderate to difficult trails and uneven terrain. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. She currently works at the NC Arboretum as the Adult Education Coordinator managing all the programming hosted through the Adult Education Department. \nShane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. But what happens at dusk when the light dims? This class will introduce you to the idea of Night gardens and the pollinators that thrive in them. From Beetles to Moths and everything you can do to support them\, Garden Pollinators at dusk gives you a chance to consider the world of pollination after the sun goes down. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nEmma Moore is a plant ecologist but has worn many hats over the years. She graduated with her master’s from ETSU studying plant pollinator interactions and invasive moth species and in undergrad studied how tardigrades could help soybeans survive droughts. Emma has worked both in an apple research lab and as a plant genetic researcher.
