We will go over best practices for using binoculars\, recommendations for purchasing your own binoculars\, and popular field guides to use. Bring your own binoculars but if you do not have a pair we have some loaner binoculars available to use during the program. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. DESCRIPTION:Blue Ridge Ecosystems – from the Ice Age to the Present\nwith Dan Lazar \nSaturday\, June 28  |  1 – 3 pm \nBRN – Ecology Core  |  BREG – Elective \nBlue Ridge ecosystems have changed dramatically since the end of the last ice age 18\,000 years ago.  For example\, while glacial still covered northern Ohio and Pennsylvania\, the summits of the Great Craggy Mountains\, the Black Mountains and the Smokies were treeless and clothed in alpine tundra vegetation\, while Mastodons and Giant Ground Sloths roamed the valleys below.  As the climate warmed\, the plant and animal communities we see today slowly developed. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. SUMMARY:Bonsai Book Sculpture Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Bonsai Book Sculpture Workshop\nwith Eileen Bos \nSunday\, June 22  |  11 am – 3 pm \nThis class is an intricate project designed for those with long attention spans! We will be taking a ceramic bowl\, wires\, a wooden block\, foil\, and a botanical book of one’s choice\, and transforming them into a 3D bonsai tree sculpture made with the pages of the books itself! Each participant will go home with an adorable book bonsai! All materials will be provided but if you have a hard-backed book you would like to use feel free to bring it with you. \nEileen Bos is a multimedia sculpture artist from NY\, with nearly 40 years of self-taught art experience. She began drawing at the age of 3 and sculpting at age 4. She has competed in The Nickle City cake Challenge\, was featured on the cover of Buffalo Magazine\, won several tablescape awards at Bride’s World Events\, showcased in an ad in NYC’s Times Square\, and much more! DESCRIPTION:Connecting NC Standards and Environmental Education\nwith Environmental Educator of North Carolina \nThursday\, June 12  |  10 am – 2 pm \nThis workshop is designed to help educators understand how to connect North Carolina state science standards (and others!) to environmental education activities and how to use them when planning lessons and curricula for school-age audiences. Participants will also explore and experience strategies for getting students to observe\, ask questions\, and then make tentative explanations based on the available evidence\, igniting students’ wonder and curiosity. Educators also learn how to coach students to evaluate evidence\, to engage in argument from evidence using scientific academic language\, and to develop the habits of mind necessary to curiously investigate the natural world. \nFormat: This workshop is in person at The NC Arboretum in Asheville. \nEarning Credit: This course qualifies for 4 hours Criteria III Credit for EE Certification Program Enrollees\, 4-hour maximum CE Credit for those already EE Certified. DESCRIPTION:Wildwoods Walk\nwith Alexandra Holland \nThursday\, May 29  |  1 – 3 pm \nBRN – Elective |  BREG – Elective \nAs spring transitions to summer\, we see changes in the plants around us.  Naturalist and botanist Alexandra Holland leads this walk at the Arboretum\, pointing out the array of late spring wildflowers in bloom and discussing seasonal differences in the landscape. Learn some basics of wildflower and tree ecology and identification while taking in the beauty of the season. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. DESCRIPTION:Tiny Worlds of the Appalachian Mountains: Artist Talk & Gallery Opening\nwith Rosalie Haizlett \nSaturday\, May 24  |  6 – 7 pm \nJoin nature author and illustrator Rosalie Haizlett for an artist talk and gallery opening focused around her new book and traveling art exhibit\, Tiny Worlds of the Appalachian Mountains: An Artist’s Journey. Tiny Worlds chronicles Rosalie’s 6-month journey from Alabama to Newfoundland as she hiked daily and looked for small\, often-overlooked flora\, fauna\, and fungi. She painted and wrote about her observations along the way\, and the finished book includes more than 150 watercolor paintings and illustrated maps. This book is a celebration of Appalachian biodiversity and an invitation to tune into our natural surroundings in a deeper way. Attendees will get a behind-the-scenes look at her adventures and artwork and the opportunity to participate in a Q&A following the talk. Book signing to follow with books available for purchase from Malaprops Bookstore. \nThis event is free but we will be accepting donations for the NC Arboretum’s ONE Fund at the door for those that did not pre-register. \nRosalie Haizlett is an illustrator who creates captivating paintings that celebrate the hidden wonders of the natural world. Haizlett has been an artist-in-residence at Great Smoky Mountains National Park\, with the National Audubon Society at Hog Island\, and at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History. In 2022\, she was awarded the Eckelberry Fellowship for distinguished wildlife illustrators. Rosalie also teaches workshops in person and online\, and so far she has taught more than 60\,000 students how to paint the natural world as a Top Teacher on Skillshare. SUMMARY:Southern Appalachian Entomology
DESCRIPTION:Southern Appalachian Entomology\nwith Shane Myers \nFriday\, May 23  |  12 – 4 pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nEntomology is the study of insects and in the Southern Appalachian region\, we have a large diversity of these amazing creatures! In this course\, we will discuss the history and life cycles of local insects and how to find and Identify insects you find in nature. We will also look for insects and note their role in nature\, how they affect our lives\, and ways to help ensure they continue to live around us. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nShane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. DESCRIPTION:Spring Birding Hike at the Arboretum\nwith Lauren Lampley \nWednesday\, May 21  |  8:30 – 11 am \nBRN – Elective \nSpring is an exciting time for migrating birds! Join Lauren on a hike around the NC Arboretum looking for as many migrant songbirds as we can find. We will focus on finding migrating Warblers but will also look at any birds we find. Bring your binoculars with you but we will have some students to borrow if needed. Beginner birders are welcome but this class will be more focused on seeing as many species as possible than developing skills for birding. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. DESCRIPTION:Mammals of the Southern Appalachians\nwith Carlton Burke \nTuesday\, May 20  |  12 – 4 pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nThe rugged mountains of Appalachia host a tremendous variety of mammal species ranging from tiny shrews weighing only a few ounces at most to huge mammals such as the black bear which can weigh in at several hundred pounds. Also large mammals such as the cougar\, bison\, and elk also once commonly roamed these mountains. In this class we will discuss present and past mammals of the region\, their distribution\, natural life cycles\, and also controversies and cultural connections they have with the ever increasing human population of the area.  Class participants will also have a chance to meet a few live\, native mammal species of the mountain region as well. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits. DESCRIPTION:Beginning Bonsai Workshop\nwith Rebecca Ayres \nSaturday\, May 17  |  9:30 am – 4:30 pm \nAlthough it has its roots in ancient Asian traditions\, the living art of bonsai now enjoys enthusiasts throughout much of the world. This class will provide the basic concepts and skills for novices to begin growing and shaping their own miniature trees. The first half of the class will cover the fundamental horticultural and aesthetic principles of bonsai. It will include such topics as tree selection\, watering\, pest control\, pruning\, wiring\, and styling. In the second half of the class\, each participant will receive a pot\, scissors\, wire\, and planting medium. With guidance from the instructor\, the students will create their own bonsai to take home. Materials included in registration.  \nRebecca Ayres is a ceramic artist and gardener. A longtime Arboretum volunteer\, she is the assistant to the bonsai curator and helps with overseeing the exhibition garden\, the collection and the Carolina Bonsai Expo. Most popular field guides include some kind of key to help users identify flowers that they see out in nature but learning how to use one can be a challenge. Join Scott Dean on this brand new class on how to use the non-technical keys found in two wildflower field guides: Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide and Wildflowers of the Atlantic Southeast. Also bring your hand lens/jeweler’s loupe to inspect plants up close and we recommend using a 7 – 10x power lens for this class. \nWe will have a few copies of each guide and some hand lenses to borrow but please bring your own if you have them. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nScott Dean was born and raised in the mountains of southern Appalachia\, specifically the coalfields of West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. He developed the original Ecology\, Botany\, and Zoology curricula for the Blue Ridge Naturalist Program\, and has been both a classroom and field instructor with the program since its inception. DESCRIPTION:EcoHopeful\nwith Liza Wolff-Francis \nSunday\, April 6  |  2 – 4 pm \nIn a climate disaster like a hurricane\, there is chaos and moment to moment survival and often fear. Immediately afterwards\, there is often a gathering of self\, an assessing of the situation. Then comes grief\, loss\, and uncertainty. Much later\, the outer world expects things will all get back to normal\, though we may not feel we are quite “back” to what we were. In fact\, we may feel deeply changed. In all of these stages of a disaster\, we assess what is happening and how we are doing and what we need to do going forward.  \nIn this quick 2-hour workshop\, we will come together in our resiliency to normalize how we have responded to the disaster and to learn and practice tools to calm our nervous systems in order to feel stronger in our current assessment of what’s next for us. She has an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Goddard College. She is a feminist ecopoet and has taught creative writing workshops for over a decade. She wrote the play “Border Rising” that was performed in south Tucson\, Silver City\, NM and Albuquerque\, NM. She was on the Albuquerque Poetry Slam team in 2008\, was co-director for the 2014 Austin International Poetry Festival\, and now works organizing the West End Poetry Festival with the Town of Carrboro and the Carrboro Poets Council.  \nHer writing has been widely anthologized and has most recently appeared in The Phare\, Walter Magazine\, Wild Roof Journal\, Snapdragon\, and The Bombay Literary Magazine. Her essay “Exploring Ecopoetry: Changing Definitions” was published by Valparaiso University. DESCRIPTION:Geology of the Blue Ridge I\nwith Anton DuMars \nON-SITE  |  Wednesday\, March 19  |  12 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Geology of the Blue Ridge Core Credit \nThis is the first class of a two-part Geology course that explores the geologic history of the Southern Appalachian Mountains with lecture presentations\, discussions and self-guided explorations in the field. The course begins with a discussion of the earth’s interior and plate tectonics\, progresses to a model for the formation of the southern Appalachians and then describes the surficial processes that generate the current mountain topography. Discussion will also include an overview of geologic processes that affect these mountains today: earthquakes\, mass movements and floods. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. Expand your understanding of topographic and geologic maps with this course taught by Geologist Anton DuMars. An in-class portion will focus on an investigation of map symbols\, scales\, dates\, color-coding\, water features\, and other attributes that are used to interpret data on topographic and geologic maps into. Then the class will move outside for a skills session to interpret real-world features within a map\, stepping off on some exploration at the Arboretum. If you have one\, please bring a handheld compass with you to the class but we will have some for students to borrow if needed. \nThis program takes place both indoors and out. Designed for a general audience\, this workshop is great for homeowners who steward hemlocks on their property or for anyone interested in learning treatment basics. Today hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before! \nThe objective of the Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is to restore eastern and Carolina hemlocks to their native habitats throughout North Carolina and to mitigate damage to hemlocks caused by infestation of the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). DESCRIPTION:Fishes of the Southern Appalachians\nwith Carlton Burke \nON-SITE  |  Thursday\, March 13  |  12 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Wildlife of the Blue Ridge Core Credit \nThe Southern Appalachian region is rich with a variety of fish species. These include not only the better known species of game fish that we love to catch for sport or food\, but also include an incredible diversity of smaller\, lesser-known non-game fish\, which play an important role in the ecology of our aquatic mountain habitats. In this class we will discuss many of the fish species found in the mountain region and learn about their classification\, habitat\, life cycles\, and their identifying features.    \nThis program includes a lab portion of the class where students will see some features of fish hands on with real fish specimens. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits.
