DESCRIPTION:Botanical Watercolor for Beginners\nwith Rosalie Haizlett \nSaturday\, May 24  |  10 am – 12 pm \nIn this relaxing workshop\, nature illustrator Rosalie Haizlett will guide students through her complete ink-and-watercolor illustration process\, from pencil sketch to final painting. Weather permitting\, we’ll start the class with a 15-minute walk to find some interesting plants to document\, taking photos and making observations of what we see along the way. Then\, we’ll return to the classroom to use a combination of living subjects collected prior to the workshop and reference photos to bring our lovely plant muses to life on the page. Ages 12+\, limited to 15 students. 2 hour class\, all materials provided. \nRosalie Haizlett is an illustrator who creates captivating paintings that celebrate the hidden wonders of the natural world. Haizlett has been an artist-in-residence at Great Smoky Mountains National Park\, with the National Audubon Society at Hog Island\, and at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History. In 2022\, she was awarded the Eckelberry Fellowship for distinguished wildlife illustrators. Rosalie also teaches workshops in person and online\, and so far she has taught more than 60\,000 students how to paint the natural world as a Top Teacher on Skillshare. DESCRIPTION:Southern Appalachian Entomology\nwith Shane Myers \nFriday\, May 23  |  12 – 4 pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nEntomology is the study of insects and in the Southern Appalachian region\, we have a large diversity of these amazing creatures! In this course\, we will discuss the history and life cycles of local insects and how to find and Identify insects you find in nature. We will also look for insects and note their role in nature\, how they affect our lives\, and ways to help ensure they continue to live around us. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nShane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. Join Lauren on a hike around the NC Arboretum looking for as many migrant songbirds as we can find. We will focus on finding migrating Warblers but will also look at any birds we find. Bring your binoculars with you but we will have some students to borrow if needed. Beginner birders are welcome but this class will be more focused on seeing as many species as possible than developing skills for birding. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. DESCRIPTION:Mammals of the Southern Appalachians\nwith Carlton Burke \nTuesday\, May 20  |  12 – 4 pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nThe rugged mountains of Appalachia host a tremendous variety of mammal species ranging from tiny shrews weighing only a few ounces at most to huge mammals such as the black bear which can weigh in at several hundred pounds. Also large mammals such as the cougar\, bison\, and elk also once commonly roamed these mountains. In this class we will discuss present and past mammals of the region\, their distribution\, natural life cycles\, and also controversies and cultural connections they have with the ever increasing human population of the area.  Class participants will also have a chance to meet a few live\, native mammal species of the mountain region as well. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits. DESCRIPTION:Beginning Bonsai Workshop\nwith Rebecca Ayres \nSaturday\, May 17  |  9:30 am – 4:30 pm \nAlthough it has its roots in ancient Asian traditions\, the living art of bonsai now enjoys enthusiasts throughout much of the world. This class will provide the basic concepts and skills for novices to begin growing and shaping their own miniature trees. The first half of the class will cover the fundamental horticultural and aesthetic principles of bonsai. It will include such topics as tree selection\, watering\, pest control\, pruning\, wiring\, and styling. In the second half of the class\, each participant will receive a pot\, scissors\, wire\, and planting medium. With guidance from the instructor\, the students will create their own bonsai to take home. Materials included in registration.  \nRebecca Ayres is a ceramic artist and gardener. A longtime Arboretum volunteer\, she is the assistant to the bonsai curator and helps with overseeing the exhibition garden\, the collection and the Carolina Bonsai Expo. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nJenne Sluder\, MA C-IAYT holds a Master’s in Transpersonal Psychology: Ecopsychology from Naropa University. Jenne is also an environmental educator and spent her undergrad years working and studying under the direct mentorship of Thomas Berry and Joseph Cornell at the Center for Education\, Imagination\, and the Natural World\, continuing her studies in nature-based rites of passage with the School of Lost Borders and the Earth-Based Institute. In Japan\, the birthplace of forest bathing (Shinrin Yoku)\, they celebrate the annual cherry blossom bloom (Sakura) with a practice known as Hanami\, which translates to “contemplate the flowers.” This experience gently invites us to cultivate our attention and sensory awareness\, while noticing the evanescent nature of flowering\, both within and around us. Together\, we will explore our relationships with native wildflowers\, ourselves\, each-other\, and the more-than-human-world. \nYour guide will lead you on a colorful journey through the blossoming spring forest\, weaving mindfulness\, breathwork\, forest bathing and nature therapy together for a restorative morning on some of the trails less traveled at the North Carolina Arboretum. DESCRIPTION:Spring Flora ID\nwith Alexandra Holland \nTuesday\, April 29  |  1 – 4 pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Core \nAs we walk the Arboretum’s trails\, we’ll focus on learning to identify spring wildflowers plus trees.  We’ll discuss plant communities and habitats along with the natural and cultural history of the native flora of the Blue Ridge.  Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide and Swanson’s A Field Guide to the Trees and Shrubs of the Southern Appalachians are recommended as references. \nAlexandra Holland graduated from Duke University and earned her Master’s degree in botany from the University of Texas at Austin.  She was in the first class of students to be certified as Blue Ridge Naturalists.  Alexandra managed the UTEX Culture Collection of Algae at UT Austin and spent many hours working with education programs at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.  She has taught botany for over a decade and leads nature hikes in Western NC for groups of all ages. \n\nMembers: Remember to enter your promo code upon checkout to receive your 10% member discount! And it turns out black bears are coming out in large numbers to enjoy the same things that humans enjoy. Learn about the conditions that contribute to the black bear population continuing to thrive in Western North Carolina in proximity to so many people. Most popular field guides include some kind of key to help users identify flowers that they see out in nature but learning how to use one can be a challenge. Join Scott Dean on this brand new class on how to use the non-technical keys found in two wildflower field guides: Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide and Wildflowers of the Atlantic Southeast. Also bring your hand lens/jeweler’s loupe to inspect plants up close and we recommend using a 7 – 10x power lens for this class. \nWe will have a few copies of each guide and some hand lenses to borrow but please bring your own if you have them. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Immediately afterwards\, there is often a gathering of self\, an assessing of the situation. Then comes grief\, loss\, and uncertainty. Much later\, the outer world expects things will all get back to normal\, though we may not feel we are quite “back” to what we were. In fact\, we may feel deeply changed. In all of these stages of a disaster\, we assess what is happening and how we are doing and what we need to do going forward.  \nIn this quick 2-hour workshop\, we will come together in our resiliency to normalize how we have responded to the disaster and to learn and practice tools to calm our nervous systems in order to feel stronger in our current assessment of what’s next for us. Join us for a gathering in community\, strength building\, and resiliency boosting\, as we continue to weave Helene into one of the stories we carry with us\, not one that carries us. \nLiza Wolff-Francis is the 8th Poet Laureate of Carrboro\, North Carolina. She has an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Goddard College. She is a feminist ecopoet and has taught creative writing workshops for over a decade. She wrote the play “Border Rising” that was performed in south Tucson\, Silver City\, NM and Albuquerque\, NM. She was on the Albuquerque Poetry Slam team in 2008\, was co-director for the 2014 Austin International Poetry Festival\, and now works organizing the West End Poetry Festival with the Town of Carrboro and the Carrboro Poets Council.  \nHer writing has been widely anthologized and has most recently appeared in The Phare\, Walter Magazine\, Wild Roof Journal\, Snapdragon\, and The Bombay Literary Magazine. Her essay “Exploring Ecopoetry: Changing Definitions” was published by Valparaiso University. The course begins with a discussion of the earth’s interior and plate tectonics\, progresses to a model for the formation of the southern Appalachians and then describes the surficial processes that generate the current mountain topography. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. Expand your understanding of topographic and geologic maps with this course taught by Geologist Anton DuMars. An in-class portion will focus on an investigation of map symbols\, scales\, dates\, color-coding\, water features\, and other attributes that are used to interpret data on topographic and geologic maps into. Then the class will move outside for a skills session to interpret real-world features within a map\, stepping off on some exploration at the Arboretum. Designed for a general audience\, this workshop is great for homeowners who steward hemlocks on their property or for anyone interested in learning treatment basics. Today hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before! \nThe objective of the Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is to restore eastern and Carolina hemlocks to their native habitats throughout North Carolina and to mitigate damage to hemlocks caused by infestation of the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). These include not only the better known species of game fish that we love to catch for sport or food\, but also include an incredible diversity of smaller\, lesser-known non-game fish\, which play an important role in the ecology of our aquatic mountain habitats. In this class we will discuss many of the fish species found in the mountain region and learn about their classification\, habitat\, life cycles\, and their identifying features.    \nThis program includes a lab portion of the class where students will see some features of fish hands on with real fish specimens. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits. DESCRIPTION:Birding for Beginners\nwith Ben Bafaloukos \nON-SITE  |  Tuesday\, March 4  |  9 – 10:30am \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Elective \nJoin us on this birding walk around the NC Arboretum gardens and trails in search of a very common year round resident of North Carolina: Carolina wren. We will take an in-depth look at these noisy and “mousey” birds to observe their behaviors while also looking for other common winter bird species in our area. Bring your own binoculars but if you do not have a pair we have some loaner binoculars available to use during the program. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nBen Bafaloukos was born and raised outside Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, then moved to North Carolina to earn his B.S. in Environmental Sciences at NC State University. After graduating in 2020\, Ben spent a year researching and writing interpretive signage in West Virginia before moving to Asheville to work as an environmental educator. Ben is an avid birdwatcher who loves to share his knowledge and passion with others\, and he eagerly shares his wildlife observations through community science initiatives like iNaturalist and eBird. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Natural Dyes\nwith Joyce Tromba \nON-SITE  |  Saturday\, February 8  |  10 am – 2 pm \nLearn the basics of natural dyeing in this introductory class with fiber artist Joyce Tromba. Participants will explore how to prepare fiber for dyeing\, which plants are best to use for natural dyeing and how to extract color from them. Hands-on time for the class includes setting up a dye pot and practicing some simple resist techniques for a silk scarf.  \nJoyce Tromba is happily settled into life in lovely Western North Carolina after living and teaching around the world for 30 years. Her travels have exposed her to many fiber traditions and she has always found groups of fiber folks wherever she was to share her making with. Joyce has 20+ years teaching design\, sewing\, knitting\, quilting and bookmaking to High School students and adults. She has studied fiber and book and fiber arts at Penland\, Arrowmont\, John C Campbell Folk School and the Center for Book Arts in New York City. Join us for a Sunday morning reserved for creative self-care. Using basic mark-makers (pencils\, graphite\, etc) we’ll explore the instinctual\, yet undervalued act of drawing–through the lens of nature. We’ll take a short walk to gather inspiration & source material\, then make our way inside to observe\, study\, and create. Basic art materials\, hot tea\, and a welcoming atmosphere will be provided. All skill levels welcome! Feel free to bring your own materials\, but kindly keep wet media (paints\, etc) at home.  \nThis program takes place both indoors and out. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nMatt Reyna is an artist & gardener with over a decade of experience in public horticulture and non-profit administration.
