DESCRIPTION:Geology of the Blue Ridge I\nwith Anton DuMars \nON-SITE  |  Wednesday\, March 19  |  12 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Geology of the Blue Ridge Core Credit \nThis is the first class of a two-part Geology course that explores the geologic history of the Southern Appalachian Mountains with lecture presentations\, discussions and self-guided explorations in the field. The course begins with a discussion of the earth’s interior and plate tectonics\, progresses to a model for the formation of the southern Appalachians and then describes the surficial processes that generate the current mountain topography. Discussion will also include an overview of geologic processes that affect these mountains today: earthquakes\, mass movements and floods. \nAnton DuMars\, a resident of Black Mountain\, NC\, is an adjunct professor at the College of Charleston. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. Join Lauren on an exploration to find the first signs of spring! During this class we will also discuss the study of phenology and it is important to record the timing of spring’s events especially for climate scientists. \nThis program takes place outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. Expand your understanding of topographic and geologic maps with this course taught by Geologist Anton DuMars. An in-class portion will focus on an investigation of map symbols\, scales\, dates\, color-coding\, water features\, and other attributes that are used to interpret data on topographic and geologic maps into. Then the class will move outside for a skills session to interpret real-world features within a map\, stepping off on some exploration at the Arboretum. If you have one\, please bring a handheld compass with you to the class but we will have some for students to borrow if needed. \nThis program takes place both indoors and out. DESCRIPTION:Protecting our Native Hemlocks: Treatment Demonstration\nwith Hemlock Restorative Initiative \nON-SITE  |  Friday\, March 14  |  1 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge EcoGardener – Elective Credit \nJoin Hemlock Restoration Initiative staff for a demonstration and workshop in the Arboretum forest to learn the fundamentals of treating hemlock trees to protect them from the invasive insect\, hemlock woolly adelgid. Designed for a general audience\, this workshop is great for homeowners who steward hemlocks on their property or for anyone interested in learning treatment basics. Today hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before! \nThe objective of the Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is to restore eastern and Carolina hemlocks to their native habitats throughout North Carolina and to mitigate damage to hemlocks caused by infestation of the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). DESCRIPTION:Fishes of the Southern Appalachians\nwith Carlton Burke \nON-SITE  |  Thursday\, March 13  |  12 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Wildlife of the Blue Ridge Core Credit \nThe Southern Appalachian region is rich with a variety of fish species. These include not only the better known species of game fish that we love to catch for sport or food\, but also include an incredible diversity of smaller\, lesser-known non-game fish\, which play an important role in the ecology of our aquatic mountain habitats. In this class we will discuss many of the fish species found in the mountain region and learn about their classification\, habitat\, life cycles\, and their identifying features.    \nThis program includes a lab portion of the class where students will see some features of fish hands on with real fish specimens. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits. DESCRIPTION:Birding for Beginners\nwith Ben Bafaloukos \nON-SITE  |  Tuesday\, March 4  |  9 – 10:30am \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Elective \nJoin us on this birding walk around the NC Arboretum gardens and trails in search of a very common year round resident of North Carolina: Carolina wren. We will take an in-depth look at these noisy and “mousey” birds to observe their behaviors while also looking for other common winter bird species in our area. Bring your own binoculars but if you do not have a pair we have some loaner binoculars available to use during the program. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nBen Bafaloukos was born and raised outside Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, then moved to North Carolina to earn his B.S. in Environmental Sciences at NC State University. After graduating in 2020\, Ben spent a year researching and writing interpretive signage in West Virginia before moving to Asheville to work as an environmental educator. Ben is an avid birdwatcher who loves to share his knowledge and passion with others\, and he eagerly shares his wildlife observations through community science initiatives like iNaturalist and eBird. Participants will explore how to prepare fiber for dyeing\, which plants are best to use for natural dyeing and how to extract color from them. Hands-on time for the class includes setting up a dye pot and practicing some simple resist techniques for a silk scarf.  \nJoyce Tromba is happily settled into life in lovely Western North Carolina after living and teaching around the world for 30 years. Her travels have exposed her to many fiber traditions and she has always found groups of fiber folks wherever she was to share her making with. Joyce has 20+ years teaching design\, sewing\, knitting\, quilting and bookmaking to High School students and adults. She has studied fiber and book and fiber arts at Penland\, Arrowmont\, John C Campbell Folk School and the Center for Book Arts in New York City. All tree species have different patterns of bark and leaf/flower buds that can be used to identify them even in winter time. In this program\, we will look closely at the common trees around the NC Arboretum trails and point out specific characteristics of their buds and bark so you can identify them even without their leaves. Recommended materials for this class: A Field Guide to the Trees and Shrubs of the Southern Appalachians by Robert E. Swanson and a naturalist’s hand lens. We have hand lenses to borrow and will only be referencing the book a few times. It is not a required text. \nThis program takes place outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. DESCRIPTION:Birding for Beginners\nwith Lauren Lampley \nON-SITE  |  Tuesday\, January 7  |  9 – 10:30am\n \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Elective \n  \nOn this monthly birding walk around the NC Arboretum gardens and trails we will search for a very common year round resident of North Carolina: Carolina Chickadee. We will take an in-depth look at these charismatic birds and observe their behaviors while also looking for other common winter bird species in our area. Bring your own binoculars but if you do not have a pair we have some loaner binoculars available to use during the program. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways.
