DESCRIPTION:Protecting our Native Hemlocks: Treatment Demonstration\nwith Hemlock Restorative Initiative \nON-SITE  |  Friday\, March 14  |  1 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge EcoGardener – Elective Credit \nJoin Hemlock Restoration Initiative staff for a demonstration and workshop in the Arboretum forest to learn the fundamentals of treating hemlock trees to protect them from the invasive insect\, hemlock woolly adelgid. Designed for a general audience\, this workshop is great for homeowners who steward hemlocks on their property or for anyone interested in learning treatment basics. Today hemlock management is simpler and less expensive than ever before! \nThe objective of the Hemlock Restoration Initiative (HRI) is to restore eastern and Carolina hemlocks to their native habitats throughout North Carolina and to mitigate damage to hemlocks caused by infestation of the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). DESCRIPTION:Fishes of the Southern Appalachians\nwith Carlton Burke \nON-SITE  |  Thursday\, March 13  |  12 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Wildlife of the Blue Ridge Core Credit \nThe Southern Appalachian region is rich with a variety of fish species. These include not only the better known species of game fish that we love to catch for sport or food\, but also include an incredible diversity of smaller\, lesser-known non-game fish\, which play an important role in the ecology of our aquatic mountain habitats. In this class we will discuss many of the fish species found in the mountain region and learn about their classification\, habitat\, life cycles\, and their identifying features.    \nThis program includes a lab portion of the class where students will see some features of fish hands on with real fish specimens. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits. DESCRIPTION:Birding for Beginners\nwith Ben Bafaloukos \nON-SITE  |  Tuesday\, March 4  |  9 – 10:30am \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Elective \nJoin us on this birding walk around the NC Arboretum gardens and trails in search of a very common year round resident of North Carolina: Carolina wren. We will take an in-depth look at these noisy and “mousey” birds to observe their behaviors while also looking for other common winter bird species in our area. Bring your own binoculars but if you do not have a pair we have some loaner binoculars available to use during the program. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nBen Bafaloukos was born and raised outside Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, then moved to North Carolina to earn his B.S. in Environmental Sciences at NC State University. After graduating in 2020\, Ben spent a year researching and writing interpretive signage in West Virginia before moving to Asheville to work as an environmental educator. Ben is an avid birdwatcher who loves to share his knowledge and passion with others\, and he eagerly shares his wildlife observations through community science initiatives like iNaturalist and eBird. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Natural Dyes\nwith Joyce Tromba \nON-SITE  |  Saturday\, February 8  |  10 am – 2 pm \nLearn the basics of natural dyeing in this introductory class with fiber artist Joyce Tromba. Participants will explore how to prepare fiber for dyeing\, which plants are best to use for natural dyeing and how to extract color from them. Hands-on time for the class includes setting up a dye pot and practicing some simple resist techniques for a silk scarf.  \nJoyce Tromba is happily settled into life in lovely Western North Carolina after living and teaching around the world for 30 years. Her travels have exposed her to many fiber traditions and she has always found groups of fiber folks wherever she was to share her making with. Joyce has 20+ years teaching design\, sewing\, knitting\, quilting and bookmaking to High School students and adults. She has studied fiber and book and fiber arts at Penland\, Arrowmont\, John C Campbell Folk School and the Center for Book Arts in New York City. DESCRIPTION:Drawn to Nature\nwith Matt Reyna \nON-SITE  |  Sunday\, February 2  |  10:00am – 12:30pm \n\nInspired by nature? Got a case of creative cabin fever? Join us for a Sunday morning reserved for creative self-care. Using basic mark-makers (pencils\, graphite\, etc) we’ll explore the instinctual\, yet undervalued act of drawing–through the lens of nature. We’ll take a short walk to gather inspiration & source material\, then make our way inside to observe\, study\, and create. Basic art materials\, hot tea\, and a welcoming atmosphere will be provided. All skill levels welcome! Feel free to bring your own materials\, but kindly keep wet media (paints\, etc) at home.  \nThis program takes place both indoors and out. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nMatt Reyna is an artist & gardener with over a decade of experience in public horticulture and non-profit administration. Many words in our gardening lexicon have roots in other languages–whether a clue to their garden culture of origin\, or a complete misnomer! DESCRIPTION:Winter Buds and Bark\nwith Lauren Lampley \nON-SITE  |  Wednesday\, January 22  |  1 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Core Credit \n\nEver wondered how you can identify a tree without its leaves? All tree species have different patterns of bark and leaf/flower buds that can be used to identify them even in winter time. In this program\, we will look closely at the common trees around the NC Arboretum trails and point out specific characteristics of their buds and bark so you can identify them even without their leaves. Recommended materials for this class: A Field Guide to the Trees and Shrubs of the Southern Appalachians by Robert E. Swanson and a naturalist’s hand lens. We have hand lenses to borrow and will only be referencing the book a few times. It is not a required text. \nThis program takes place outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially likes to learn and teach about our local ecology. We’ll take a short walk to gather inspiration & source material\, then make our way inside to observe\, study\, and create. Basic art materials\, hot tea\, and a welcoming atmosphere will be provided. All skill levels welcome! DESCRIPTION:Birding for Beginners\nwith Lauren Lampley \nON-SITE  |  Tuesday\, January 7  |  9 – 10:30am\n \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Elective \n  \nOn this monthly birding walk around the NC Arboretum gardens and trails we will search for a very common year round resident of North Carolina: Carolina Chickadee. We will take an in-depth look at these charismatic birds and observe their behaviors while also looking for other common winter bird species in our area. Bring your own binoculars but if you do not have a pair we have some loaner binoculars available to use during the program. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. SUMMARY:The Arboretum's Bonsai Exhibition Garden in Summer: Curator's Talk & Tour
DESCRIPTION:Established in October 2005\, the Bonsai Exhibition Garden is a signature feature of the Arboretum and a unique environment displaying up to 50 specimens at a time. Of particular importance are the plants native to the Blue Ridge\, including American hornbeam\, red maple and eastern white pine\, which bring the thousand-year tradition of bonsai home to the mountains of Western North Carolina. Join Bonsai Curator Arthur Joura on this entertaining and informative after-hours tour of the garden at its peak\, a fitting showcase for the specimens.
