Fruitless discussions on espaliered pears? Join Adult Education Specialist Matt Reyna on a tour of garden terminology! Gardening is an ancient act\, and so too are many of the words we reference in horticulture. Many words in our gardening lexicon have roots in other languages–whether a clue to their garden culture of origin\, or a complete misnomer! In this class we will focus on a blend of terms and ideas from Western gardening practices and landscape architecture\, both historic and contemporary. \nMatt Reyna is an artist & gardener with over a decade of experience in public horticulture and non-profit administration. He has served a wide range of cultural institutions\, including Longue Vue House & Gardens and Audubon Louisiana Nature Center in New Orleans\, Biltmore Estate\, and is currently an Adult Education Specialist at the North Carolina Arboretum. Matt earned his BFA in Oil & Acrylic Painting from Northern Illinois University and quickly funneled his creative skills into the living art of horticulture. DESCRIPTION:Winter Buds and Bark\nwith Lauren Lampley \nON-SITE  |  Wednesday\, January 22  |  1 – 4 pm \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Core Credit \n\nEver wondered how you can identify a tree without its leaves? All tree species have different patterns of bark and leaf/flower buds that can be used to identify them even in winter time. In this program\, we will look closely at the common trees around the NC Arboretum trails and point out specific characteristics of their buds and bark so you can identify them even without their leaves. Recommended materials for this class: A Field Guide to the Trees and Shrubs of the Southern Appalachians by Robert E. Swanson and a naturalist’s hand lens. We have hand lenses to borrow and will only be referencing the book a few times. It is not a required text. \nThis program takes place outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially likes to learn and teach about our local ecology. We’ll take a short walk to gather inspiration & source material\, then make our way inside to observe\, study\, and create. Basic art materials\, hot tea\, and a welcoming atmosphere will be provided. All skill levels welcome! DESCRIPTION:Birding for Beginners\nwith Lauren Lampley \nON-SITE  |  Tuesday\, January 7  |  9 – 10:30am\n \nBlue Ridge Naturalist – Elective \n  \nOn this monthly birding walk around the NC Arboretum gardens and trails we will search for a very common year round resident of North Carolina: Carolina Chickadee. We will take an in-depth look at these charismatic birds and observe their behaviors while also looking for other common winter bird species in our area. Bring your own binoculars but if you do not have a pair we have some loaner binoculars available to use during the program. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. SUMMARY:The Arboretum's Bonsai Exhibition Garden in Summer: Curator's Talk & Tour
DESCRIPTION:Established in October 2005\, the Bonsai Exhibition Garden is a signature feature of the Arboretum and a unique environment displaying up to 50 specimens at a time. Of particular importance are the plants native to the Blue Ridge\, including American hornbeam\, red maple and eastern white pine\, which bring the thousand-year tradition of bonsai home to the mountains of Western North Carolina. Join Bonsai Curator Arthur Joura on this entertaining and informative after-hours tour of the garden at its peak\, a fitting showcase for the specimens.
