DESCRIPTION:Long-term Effects of Hurricane Helene on Southern Appalachian Ecosystems\nwith Dan Lazar \nWednesday\, September 23  |  1 pm – 3 pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nIt has been two years since hurricane Helene ravaged the ecosystems of Western North Carolina\, uprooting trees and causing major flooding along mountain rivers and streams. How have the animals and plants of the affected areas responded to this historic event?  Where do songbirds go to escape hurricane winds?  How can fish and aquatic invertebrates tolerate such massive flooding?  What factors determine which trees are toppled and which survive?  We will investigate the long-term effects of Hurricane Helene on the natural plant and animal communities of Western North Carolina during this illustrated lecture followed by a short walk on Arboretum grounds to observe the ongoing recovery of hurricane-damaged areas. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum. Jenne is also an environmental educator and spent her undergrad years working and studying under the direct mentorship of Thomas Berry and Joseph Cornell at the Center for Education\, Imagination\, and the Natural World\, continuing her studies in nature-based rites of passage with the School of Lost Borders and the Earth-Based Institute. DESCRIPTION:Bats of the NC Arboretum with Mist Netting Demonstration\nwith Megan Zeger and team \nFriday\, September 25  |  7 – 9pm \nBRN – Elective \nRegister Here!\n  \nThe NC Arboretum hosts a variety of bat species in our forests. Join a group of biologists for a presentation about the recent acoustic bat study they conducted on the Arboretum’s property this summer and which species they found. Then\, once the presentation is over\, join the crew out in the woods for a mist netting demonstration if weather allows. During this class\, you will learn all about the different species of bats that call the NC Arboretum home\, how biologists collect data about bat presence in a location using microphones\, and even might have the chance to see live\, wild bats up close and personal! \nParticipants will not be handling the bats\, and the bats will only be handled by the trained biologists. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nMegan Zeger is a graduate student at Virginia Tech studying four imperiled bat species in the Asheville\, NC area. She has been studying and working with wildlife in the southern Appalachians since 2018 when she started her undergraduate program in wildlife conservation. She has been working with bats since 2022 and has done research on various species in Maryland\, North Carolina\, Utah\, Virginia\, West Virginia\, and Wyoming. \nJessica Davey is a wildlife biologist currently working for Virginia Tech’s Conservation and Management Institute. Having graduated from Lees-McRae College in 2021\, she has since worked primarily as a bat researcher in six different states. Her experience ranges from Mist netting and acoustic surveys to conducting hibernacula and white-nose swabbing in the caves of Florida. She hopes to continue gaining as much knowledge as she can about the world’s only flying mammal. \nKatie Kadkovsky is a recent Biology graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill. While there\, she worked in molecular biology labs at Chapel Hill and Duke studying fungi. Katie was introduced to the bat world at UNC-CH via acoustic surveys of NC’s sky islands. Currently\, she is a wildlife biologist with Virginia Tech CMI helping characterize the presence of tri-colored bats in the greater Asheville area to support conservation practices. \nLiam Jawish is a recent graduate from Virginia Tech! He is currently working as a wildlife biologist surveying bats in Asheville\, NC. He previously worked on Jaguar surveys in Belize\, CA\, and bear work in central Virginia. \nLucy Kraus is a wildlife biologist with the Conservation Management Institute at Virginia Tech. She graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2026 with a degree in environmental science. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nLauren Lampley began her career at Grandfather Mountain Stewardship Foundation as a Park Naturalist which solidified Lauren’s interests in ecology and a passion for teaching others. She has led walks and hikes in a variety of subjects from Geology to Birding and especially enjoys learning and teaching about our local ecology. Many of our native species are identifiable even when they’re dormant\, and learning this practice is a rewarding and useful skill for all naturalists. We will talk about how to use the bark\, twigs\, and more to be able to recognize new and familiar trees in our region. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nHannah Lilly is a Botanist and Ecologist interested in the connection between plants\, people\, and their environment. She studied Biology with a concentration in Ecology\, Evolution\, and the Environment (BS) at Appalachian State University. She has since worked for the North Carolina and Virginia Natural Heritage Programs conducting field work to monitor rare and sensitive plant species\, and to help conserve the truly special natural communities of The Southern Appalachians. Currently\, Hannah is a Botany Technician with the US Forest Service- Pisgah in partnership with The Conservation Corps of NC\, through which her understanding of WNC ecology and land management is ever growing. Hannah loves to slow down\, notice the details\, and revel in the whimsy of the natural world with others. \nBen Warfield graduated from NC State University with a degree in wildlife biology\, where he took many classes centered on species identification and ecosystem measurement. While at NC State\, he helped teach tree identification and wildlife survey techniques during several field courses offered by the university. DESCRIPTION:Bonsai in a Day: Learn\, Create\, Take Home\nwith Rebecca Ayres \nSaturday\, October 3  |  9:30 am – 4:30pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nAlthough it has its roots in ancient Asian traditions\, the living art of bonsai now enjoys enthusiasts throughout much of the world. This class will provide the basic concepts and skills for novices to begin growing and shaping their own miniature trees. The first half of the class will cover the fundamental horticultural and aesthetic principles of bonsai. It will include such topics as tree selection\, watering\, pest control\, pruning\, wiring\, and styling. In the second half of the class\, each participant will receive a pot\, scissors\, wire\, and planting medium. With guidance from the instructor\, the students will create their own bonsai to take home. Materials included in registration. \nRebecca Ayres is a ceramic artist and gardener. A longtime Arboretum volunteer\, she is the assistant to the bonsai curator and helps with overseeing the exhibition garden\, the collection and the Carolina Bonsai Expo. We will go over best practices for using binoculars\, recommendations for purchasing your own binoculars\, and popular field guides to use. Bring your own binoculars but if you do not have a pair we have some loaner binoculars available to use during the program. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nShane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. Kudzu\, often thought of as an invasive plant\, offers a surprising gift: strong\, flexible vines that make for beautiful\, functional baskets. In this workshop you’ll learn how to identify\, harvest\, and prepare kudzu responsibly\, turning an abundant wild plant into a useful basket. Together we’ll explore weaving techniques and create baskets that reflect each of our creativity. Come away with your own handmade basket\, practical knowledge for future projects\, and a new appreciation for kudzu. There will be a 30 minute lunch break and materials will be provided. If you have sharp pruners\, feel free to bring them along! \nCarleigh Fairchild has a deep love for the Earth. She gardens\, keeps bees\, wild harvests\, processes animals\, tans hides\, weaves baskets\, and finds joy in time spent around the fire. As the founder of Human Nature Connection LLC\, she is dedicated to helping others rediscover respectful and collaborative relationships with the more then human world. Carleigh’s journey—including 86 days on the survival show ALONE in Patagonia—deepened her understanding of belonging and connection. With over 25 years of experience\, she teaches both online and in-person classes in Western North Carolina\, weaving together earth skills\, community\, and healing. DESCRIPTION:The Art of Bonsai: Cultivating Your Appreciation\nwith Rebecca Ayres \nThursday\, October 8  |  1 – 2:30pm \nRegister Here!\n  \nDo you enjoy visiting the bonsai collection at the Arboretum but wish you had a deeper understanding of the art of bonsai? If you’d like to learn more about the cultivation and shaping of bonsai\, but don’t necessarily want grow your own\, this class is for you. It will cover the history of bonsai from ancient China to the Arboretum’s Bonsai Exhibition Garden. It will show the aesthetic qualities that are desirable in bonsai. While this course doesn’t cover all the detailed information you’d want for growing your own little trees\, it does discuss how bonsai are started\, nurtured\, pruned\, root-pruned\, and wired. You’ll get behind-the-scenes views of the care of bonsai at the Arboretum and learn what makes the Arboretum’s bonsai display special. You’ll get some tips on where and when to see bonsai at the Arboretum and other public displays. \nRebecca Ayres is a ceramic artist and gardener. A longtime Arboretum volunteer\, she is the assistant to the bonsai curator and helps with overseeing the exhibition garden\, the collection and the Carolina Bonsai Expo. DESCRIPTION:Fall Ecology Walk\nwith Dan Lazar \nFriday\, October 9  |  1:30 – 3pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Core \nRegister Here!\n  \nParticipants will walk through the garden and then head into the Arboretum Forest on easily accessible trails. Along the way we’ll take in autumn wildflowers and the changing hues on autumn’s rich palette of colors apparent on the diverse species of our native trees. We’ll learn how each autumn in Southern Appalachia is different\, due in part to this biological diversity and changing climate conditions over the course of the year. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nDan Lazar served for many years as the director of education at the Western North Carolina Nature Center\, followed by several years as executive director of the Colburn Earth Science Museum.
