SUMMARY:Insect Pollinators of the Blue Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Insect Pollinators of the Blue Ridge\nwith Shane Myers \nWednesday\, June 17  |  1 – 4pm \nBRN – Elective  |  BREG – Core \nREGISTER HERE \nOur plants in the Blue Ridge are pollinated by more insects than just Honey Bees. In this course\, we will look at common and some less obvious pollinators of the region and discuss their life cycles\, the benefits they provide the world\, and how to attract them. We will also go outside to look for pollinators doing their work around the Arboretum grounds. \nThis program takes place in the classroom and outdoors. Please come prepared to walk on gentle\, yet uneven terrain\, and dress appropriately for the weather. \nShane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. She graduated with her master’s from ETSU studying plant pollinator interactions and invasive moth species and in undergrad studied how tardigrades could help soybeans survive droughts. DESCRIPTION:Watercolor for Beginners: Spring Petals\nwith Dayna Walton \nFriday\, June 12  |  10 – 2pm \nREGISTER HERE \nJoin Dayna Walton of Solstice Handmade to learn watercolor methods to capture the many colors and forms of spring petals. We will start with a brief technique warmup\, practicing value\, stroke\, and blending. Then we will dive into color mixing\, practicing creating vivid shades found in spring blooms from just 3 primary colors. For the last half of class\, students will paint provided wildflowers from life\, practicing sketching flower forms\, color matching hues\, and lifelike values. While we paint\, we will learn how to identify common spring wildflowers currently blooming at the arboretum. This workshop is suitable for painters of all experience levels\, all supplies will be provided for use during class. \nDayna Walton came to love WNC through the Artist-in-Residence program of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 2019. Since then\, she’s been hiking and sketching and learning about ecology wherever she can. Her illustrations are her way of studying the creepy\, crawly\, tiny\, often overlooked parts of nature. The course is a springboard from which students can later explore gardening topics in more depth\, such as gardening on slopes\, managing stormwater\, creating hedgerows\, invasive plants\, and grappling with native vs. exotic controversies. \nNina Shippen practices residential landscape and garden design through her company Hidden Road Landscape Design\, which focuses on coupling the principles of healing gardens with sound ecologic practices to create satisfying gardens for her clients. DESCRIPTION:Plant Sale Class: Soil Amendments & Conditioners\nwith Phil Roudebush \nSaturday\, May 30  |  11:30 am – 12:30 pm \nBREG – Elective \nREGISTER HERE \nWhat should we do to amend our heavy clay soils? Soil amendments include any material added and mixed into soil to improve the fertility\, physical characteristics or beneficial microbial activity in the soil. Soil conditioners are amendments used to specifically improve soil structure. This class will discuss basic concepts of soil science and how soil amendments and conditioners can be used to improve soil health. \nPhil Roudebush is a native of Indiana and lived in Colorado\, Missouri\, Mississippi and Kansas before moving to North Carolina in 2015. He is a retired veterinarian who has worked in small animal practice\, taught in several veterinary schools and did research\, product development and technical communication in the animal health industry. Phil has maintained a large vegetable garden\, herb garden\, pumpkin patch\, water garden and a 30-acre native grass hay pasture. DESCRIPTION:Mammals of the Southern Appalachians\nwith Carlton Burk \nFriday\, May 29  |  12 – 4pm \nBRN – Core  |  BREG – Elective \nREGISTER HERE \nThe rugged mountains of Appalachia host a tremendous variety of mammal species ranging from tiny shrews weighing only a few ounces at most to huge mammals such as the black bear which can weigh in at several hundred pounds. Also large mammals such as the cougar\, bison\, and elk also once commonly roamed these mountains. In this class we will discuss present and past mammals of the region\, their distribution\, natural life cycles\, and also controversies and cultural connections they have with the ever increasing human population of the area.  Class participants will also have a chance to meet a few live\, native mammal species of the mountain region as well. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits. Soil amendments include any material added and mixed into soil to improve the fertility\, physical characteristics or beneficial microbial activity in the soil. Soil conditioners are amendments used to specifically improve soil structure. This class will discuss basic concepts of soil science and how soil amendments and conditioners can be used to improve soil health. \nPhil Roudebush is a native of Indiana and lived in Colorado\, Missouri\, Mississippi and Kansas before moving to North Carolina in 2015. He is a retired veterinarian who has worked in small animal practice\, taught in several veterinary schools and did research\, product development and technical communication in the animal health industry. Phil has maintained a large vegetable garden\, herb garden\, pumpkin patch\, water garden and a 30-acre native grass hay pasture. In this class\, artist Erika Busse will teach you how to paint an original Appalachian inspired artwork outside at the beautiful North Carolina Arboretum. SUMMARY:Introduction to Western Papermaking
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Western Papermaking\nwith Alyssa Sacora \nTuesday\, May 26  |  10 – 4pm \nREGISTER HERE \nThe craft of paper making is gaining in popularity as it is discovered by folks who want to go beyond using store bought paper in their creative practice. Handmade paper can be personalized by adding bits of plants\, string and images to create unique materials for other creative endeavors. \nThis workshop will give you hands-on experience working with several commercially available pulps to learn the basics of western style mould and deckle papermaking. As you understand how different fibers react in sheet form\, you will be able to identify what kinds of paper will be best suited for your upcoming projects. \nThis is a hands-on experience. Each participant will take home a stack of sample papers. It’s up to you how you use the finished sheets. \nAll are welcome. No experience necessary. \nAlyssa Sacora is a crafts person exploring plant-based mediums in the form of papermaking\, book arts\, basketry and natural dyes. She finds inspiration by observing relationships in the wider world. To reduce her human footprint and encourage creative thinking\, she primarily works with locally available and repurposed natural materials. Leaves\, vines and bark from iris\, daylily\, kudzu\, okra\, tulip poplar and willow leaves are often combined with salvaged cotton fabrics to create her palette. Her artistic pursuits are directly related to her lifestyle choices with reciprocity and mindfulness as a guiding force. In addition to and in support of her craft\, she tends a 3-acre homestead in Western North Carolina with her husband\, Adam. They grow fruits and vegetables\, medicinal herbs\, and art plants. They use solar electric and solar thermal systems for electricity and heating\, collect rain water and continuously look to design their space with sustainability in mind. We consider channel hierarchy (first order\, second order\, etc.). Our stops include observation and discussions of flow and flood indicators and river forms\, such as cut banks\, point bars\, and flood channels. We observe sediment texture\, sediment load\, and consider sediment source. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy to moderate trails. His geological interests include fluvial\, deltaic\, and coastal processes. Learn a technique of pressing\, unpressing\, storing\, collaging and sealing flower petals to create a work of art. All materials and a comprehensive resource sheet provided. Make a collage that will be sealed\, matted and sleeved in the workshop. \nSusan McChesney is a pressed flower artist who uses pressed petals like strokes of paint in landscape collages. A longtime educator\, the Oshibana technique she practices\, creating art with pressed plant materials\, is adaptable to a successful workshop experience. SUMMARY:Naturalist Walk and Talk – Native Orchids
DESCRIPTION:Naturalist Walk and Talk – Native Orchids\nwith Shane Myers \nFriday\, May 8  |  1 – 3pm \nBRN –  Elective \nREGISTER HERE \nWalk around the Arboretum with our staff naturalists and talk about what we see around us. We might see plants and animals\, and evidence of them going about their lives in our backyard. Topics will be based on what we see and experience and whatever questions that come up\, so every class has the potential to be quite different. \nThis program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time. \nShane Myers’ interest in nature began as a child with a love of dinosaurs. This quickly grew to include fossils\, insects\, and reptiles\, and learning from the notes his grandparents kept of the birds that came to their feeders in Toledo\, Ohio.  He has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Biology and did most of his undergraduate work on dragonflies and damselflies. This work included coordinating an Ohio- wide survey of dragonflies that culminated in a publication in 2024. He’s assisted in outreach and education for plant conservation groups\, Odonata Groups\, and various bird groups. He holds a M.S. in Biology from Appalachian State University\, and has performed research on the ecology of salamanders and small mammals. DESCRIPTION:Getting to Know the Birds of WNC\nwith Martha Rollefson \nFriday\, May 8  |  10 – 12pm \nBRN – Elective \nREGISTER HERE \nAn introduction to the 60+ most common birds seen in Western North Carolina\, grouped in fun and memorable ways: the birds we most love\, the birds we “love to hate\,” seen in the forests\, seen around water\, winter visitors\, “knocking\,” little but bold\, those with different plumage for males and females\, and so on.   Photos will be augmented with recordings from the Merlin app to identify birds by sound\, and basic recommendations will be made for traditional field guides and attracting birds to your yard. \nMartha Rollefson has been a spare-time gardener for decades who got the “wildlife habitat” bug over 20 years ago. After leaving the corporate world she started working at Wild Birds Unlimited “to support her gardening habit\,” and she joined the Western Carolina Botany Club to learn more about native plants. While feeding the birds and observing how gardening and wildlife interact\, she has developed numerous techniques for saving time and money while reducing her carbon footprint. DESCRIPTION:Bonsai in a Day: Learn\, Create\, Take Home\nwith Rebecca Ayres \nSaturday\, May 2  |  9:30am – 4:30pm \nREGISTER HERE \nAlthough it has its roots in ancient Asian traditions\, the living art of bonsai now enjoys enthusiasts throughout much of the world. This class will provide the basic concepts and skills for novices to begin growing and shaping their own miniature trees. The first half of the class will cover the fundamental horticultural and aesthetic principles of bonsai. It will include such topics as tree selection\, watering\, pest control\, pruning\, wiring\, and styling. In the second half of the class\, each participant will receive a pot\, scissors\, wire\, and planting medium. With guidance from the instructor\, the students will create their own bonsai to take home. Materials included in registration. \nRebecca Ayres is a ceramic artist and gardener. A longtime Arboretum volunteer\, she is the assistant to the bonsai curator and helps with overseeing the exhibition garden\, the collection and the Carolina Bonsai Expo. DESCRIPTION:Southern Appalachian Birds Through the Seasons\nwith Carlton Burke \nThursday\, April 30  |  12 – 4pm \nBRN – Core \nREGISTER HERE \nSince birds are capable of long distance flights and many engage in annual migration rituals\, their presence in our area often changes in relation to the seasons of the year.  In this class we will discuss the seasonal patterns of southern Appalachian birds and focus on some of the major species and their annual life cycles. As part of this program\, there will be a “lab” portion where students will be able to meet some live birds and participate in other hands-on components to deepen the learning. \nCarlton Burke is a naturalist and educator who operates Carolina Mountain Naturalists\, an educational service which offers wildlife and nature educational programs throughout western North Carolina. He also was on the staff of the western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville for over 25 years as the Curator of Exhibits.
