SUMMARY:Blue Ridge Fiber Show
DESCRIPTION:On display September 22\, 2018 – January 6\, 2019\, inside the Education Center\, the Blue Ridge Fiber Show is an international\, biennial competition in weaving\, spinning and felting at The North Carolina Arboretum. The purpose of the show is to encourage and support fiber artists at all levels and to increase public awareness of their work. The Western North Carolina Fibers/Handweavers Guild sponsors the competition with cash awards and sales opportunities for entrants. \nThe 2018 show is entitled “Fiber Connections.” The North Carolina Arboretum provides a beautiful setting to highlight the connections between artists\, their fiber and their work. Emerging and experienced fiber art artists\, as well as junior exhibitors are invited to enter in the categories of accessories\, yardage\, tapestries\, garments and home decor. Click here to register. \nGuest Speaker Information\nEstela Romero\nBased in Angangueo\, Mexico\, Estela Romero serves as the local news reporter for the Journey North citizen science and education program. In this role\, she involves children from her local community in reporting the monarchs’ fall arrival\, sending news about the monarchs’ overwintering season and announcing the butterflies’ departure for spring migration in March. During the winter\, Estela also coordinates the Mexican side of The Symbolic Migration\, a program uniting children across North America through the migration of paper ambassador butterflies. This fall\, 60\,000 students will create symbolic monarch butterflies and send them to Mexico. In 1975\, Estela was a child living in Angangueo when the monarch overwintering sanctuaries were first “discovered.” Her family has a long history living in the town\, as well as working with of the first scientists who came to study the monarchs. For more information on Estela and the monarch programs she works with\, please click here. \nKim Bailey\nWorking in the field of education for more than 20 years\, Kim Bailey has enjoyed a wide range of experiences\, including teaching middle-school life science\, leading wilderness adventure trips\, directing outdoor education programs\, training teachers and naturalists\, developing curriculum and managing a network of environmental education websites. She has also volunteered for the National Wildlife Federation’s Habitat Stewards\, Master Gardeners\, Master Pomologists (fruit & nut specialists)\, Georgia Native Plant Society\, Monarchs Across Georgia and Bee City USA. Kim first visited the monarch butterfly overwintering sanctuaries in Mexico in 2002 and has co-led several trips to the area since then. She now enjoys growing milkweed\, wildflowers\, fruits\, and vegetables while learning more about the pollinators that also make their home at her farm in Fruitland\, N.C. For more information on Kim and Milkweed Meadows Farm\, please click here. \nDr. Nickolay Hristov and Dr. Louise Allen\nResearchers and professors at Winston-Salem State University and the Center for Design Innovation\, Dr. Nick Hristov and Dr. Louise Allen are pioneers in utilizing laser scan technology to estimate wildlife populations.  Their technique uses a system called Light Detection and Ranging\, otherwise known as LiDAR.  The annual winter coalescence of monarchs not only creates a breathtaking visual spectacle\, but provides an unparalleled opportunity to assess their numbers. Dr. Hristov and Dr. Allen have already proven LiDAR to be an effective tool for gauging populations of hibernating gray bats\, a species that exhibits dense-clustering patterns comparable to overwintering monarchs. They are now implementing LiDAR technology to make more accurate measurements of the monarch overwintering colonies in both California and Mexico. SUMMARY:Gardening on the Historic Biltmore Estate
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1880s\, George Vanderbilt began working with Frederick Law Olmsted to lay out the vision for his estate in Western North Carolina. He asked Olmsted to design an oasis that he and his family and friends could enjoy\, but also a working estate\, drawing on the latest in scientific knowledge to manage farms and woodlands. Olmsted laid out the estate roads\, fields\, pastures\, gardens and conservatory and\, in turn\, brought in Gifford Pinchot\, America’s first forester\, who would write the first forestry management plan. \nJoin Parker Andes\, Biltmore Estate’s horticulture director\, for a special evening class on Gardening on the Historic Biltmore Estate. Andes will present some of the original design ideas which Biltmore strives to maintain today and will offer considerations for contemporary application for today’s landscapes. Looking at form and function\, he will bring Biltmore’s garden spaces down to an understanding of manageable scale and will share wise words for managing landscapes. \nThis is free\, however\, standard Arboretum parking fees apply. This class will serve as two elective credit hours for the Arboretum’s Blue Ridge Eco-Gardener Certificate. \nRegister Here \nAbout the Instructor\nParker Andes serves as the horticulture director at Biltmore Estate in Asheville\, overseeing the forestry programs and all historic and non-historic landscapes on the 8\,000-acre estate. He ensures these acres meet the mission of preserving Biltmore as a privately owned\, profitable\, working estate. Andes has worked at Callaway Gardens as director of horticulture and previously at Longwood Gardens and Busch Gardens. He received his bachelor’s degree in plant and soil sciences from West Virginia University.

Due to traffic challenges accessing the Arboretum for Dr. Stamelman’s talk on June 8\, the Arboretum is offering another opportunity to hear from Dr. Stamelman and celebrate the Making Scents exhibit once more before it leaves the Arboretum on September 3. \nAuthor of “Perfume: Joy\, Obsession\, Scandal\, Sin; A Cultural History of Fragrance from 1750 to the Present\,” Dr. Stamelman will explore the mysterious allure behind fragrances and the plants that are used to make them. Dr. Stamelman’s work inspired the original Making Scents exhibit and he has lent his expertise to the Arboretum as we recreated and curated the exhibit. A brief Q&A will follow the lecture. \nSpace is limited and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Join acclaimed author Victoria Johnson for a special discussion and signing of her new book “American Eden: David Hosack\, Botany\, and Medicine in the Garden of the Early Republic” on Tuesday\, July 24\, at 6 p.m. inside the Arboretum’s Education Center.  \nThis new biography focuses on Hosack’s advocacy for the nation’s first botanical garden\, which was built in 1801 and is now buried under New York City’s Rockefeller Center. Used to grow and test medicinal plants\, Hosack’s garden was designed to support scientific progress and was developed to be more akin to the National Institutes of Health or the CDC than a tree-lined park. \nAs part of the event\, Johnson will lead a thought-provoking discussion followed by a short Q&A. SUMMARY:"A Year in the Life of a Mountain Bog" by Michael Oppenheim
DESCRIPTION:Southern Appalachian bogs are amongst the rarest natural communities in the region\, providing vital services to people\, including flood control and the filtration of pollutants that would otherwise enter our water supply. In North Carolina alone\, bogs provide habitats for nearly 90 plant and animal species that are considered rare\, and 17 bog species are either federally listed under the Endangered Species Act or are of conservation concern. \nOn display July 15 through October 1\, 2017\, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily\, inside the Education Center\, “A Year in the Life of a Mountain Bog” is the result of a yearlong photography project between photographer Michael Oppenheim and the Southern Blue Ridge Mountain Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Over the course of four seasons\, Michael captured the diverse native and non-native flora\, amphibians\, insects and fauna of a small bog located near Asheville\, while also documenting The Nature Conservancy’s restoration efforts of the bog and related research-oriented projects. He has more than 22 years of experience working as a photographer in Seattle and Asheville focusing primarily on editorial\, architectural\, wedding and non-profit clients. He hopes that this exhibit will help shed light on the few remaining bogs in the Western North Carolina region and draw attention to these biologically-diverse communities that are increasingly coming under assault.

SUMMARY:"A Year in the Life of a Mountain Bog" by Michael Oppenheim
DESCRIPTION:Southern Appalachian bogs are amongst the rarest natural communities in the region\, providing vital services to people\, including flood control and the filtration of pollutants that would otherwise enter our water supply. In North Carolina alone\, bogs provide habitats for nearly 90 plant and animal species that are considered rare\, and 17 bog species are either federally listed under the Endangered Species Act or are of conservation concern. \nOn display July 15 through October 1\, 2017\, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily\, inside the Education Center\, “A Year in the Life of a Mountain Bog” is the result of a yearlong photography project between photographer Michael Oppenheim and the Southern Blue Ridge Mountain Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Over the course of four seasons\, Michael captured the diverse native and non-native flora\, amphibians\, insects and fauna of a small bog located near Asheville\, while also documenting The Nature Conservancy’s restoration efforts of the bog and related research-oriented projects. He has more than 22 years of experience working as a photographer in Seattle and Asheville focusing primarily on editorial\, architectural\, wedding and non-profit clients. He hopes that this exhibit will help shed light on the few remaining bogs in the Western North Carolina region and draw attention to these biologically-diverse communities that are increasingly coming under assault.
