Tour Descriptions
Classic Garden Tour
Discover the landscapes of our formal gardens on a guided tour. Some of the stops include; strolling through the vibrant Quilt Garden, where colorful blooms form intricate patterns inspired by traditional quilting. Wandering along the serene pathways of the Stream Garden, where gentle waters weave through lush greenery, creating a peaceful retreat. Visiting our Heritage Garden, where you can learn about the native plants that early settlers used to make paper, dyes, baskets, and herbal remedies. These are just some of the gardens you’ll be visiting among others during your guided tour. Throughout the tour, you’ll also see sculptures reflecting the beauty of the southern Appalachians.
Archaeology and History Tour
As we walk among meticulously designed landscapes, you’ll learn about the evolution of this historic forest, its ecological significance, and the role it has played in research and conservation. This guided tour offers a unique blend of history, horticulture, and scenic beauty-perfect for nature lovers, history buffs, and garden enthusiasts alike.
Each stop on the tour showcases stunning horticultural displays, expert landscaping, and a harmonious blend of nature and design. Our tour offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the artistry of our gardens.
Trail Walks
Hit the trails and learn more about The North Carolina Arboretum’s botanically diverse forest with a guided trail walk! April through October, this free hiking program is led by trained volunteer guides who take small groups of participants along woodland trails and through a variety of forest types. Depending on the season and each guide’s area of expertise, topics of discussion may include wildflowers, plant and tree identification, natural history and more.
Walks are limited to 15 people and are not recommended for guests under 16 years of age. Topics and trails featured will vary based on weather, trail conditions and each guide’s area of expertise. Walks take place at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays based on docent availability. Walks are first-come, first-served and sign-up sheets are located in the Baker Visitor Center. Walks are FREE; however, donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society are appreciated. Regular parking fees apply.
Running Groups
Running on the Arboretum’s trails is a great way to exercise in a beautiful setting! Individual runners and small groups up to 10 people are welcome on all Arboretum trails when the property is open to the public. (See our Plan a Visit page for current property hours.)
Running groups (10+ people) should contact groups@ncarboretum.org for guidelines before visiting the Arboretum. We thank you in advance for helping to ensure a positive experience for all guests!
Please observe the following etiquette while sharing the trails:
– Runners should be courteous towards other visitors, leaving at least half the width of the trail/road open and announcing their presence when passing.
– Runners/visitors under 16 years of age must be supervised by an adult. The adult must accompany the underage visitors on the trails.
Student Field Trips
We’re excited to welcome your school group to the Arboretum during the 2025–26 school year!
Our guided Field Trip programs take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from September – May. Self-guided trips for schools and other youth groups are also available throughout the week.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I book my group visit?
We recommend booking at least 4-6 weeks in advance, especially for visits during our peak spring and fall seasons. This ensures availability of guides and educational spaces.
What is the minimum group size?
A minimum of 15 participants is required to qualify for our group rates and specialized educational programming.
Where do buses park?
We have dedicated motorcoach and school bus parking near the main entrance. Instructions will be provided in your confirmation packet.
Can we bring our own lunches?
Yes! Groups are welcome to bring bagged lunches to enjoy at our designated picnic areas. We also offer boxed lunch catering options through our on-site café.
What happens if it rains?
Programs run rain or shine! We adapt activities for light rain, and have indoor greenhouse and classroom spaces available for severe weather.
