We are excited to announce a new addition to the Arboretum’s permanent art collection: Nature’s Throne, a vibrant mosaic sculpture generously donated by Asheville artist Linda Pannullo.
Located in the Education Center Plaza, Nature’s Throne invites visitors of all ages to explore its intricate design through an interactive scavenger hunt. The piece showcases 44 representations of southeastern biodiversity, including 15 North Carolina state symbols. Click here for a full list of featured flora and fauna.
Linda shared: “The chair was inspired by my love of the outdoors and deep appreciation for living in this beautiful area. I hope people will see the interconnectivity of nature and take action to protect it. I believe art should be accessible to all, and Nature’s Throne was designed to be both tangible and educational. Put the ‘A’ in STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.”

dition to celebrating nature, Linda continued, “The mosaic chair is a fitting tribute to the lasting legacy of Clara Curtis, honoring her many years of dedication to the Arboretum.” Clara, the Arboretum’s former Senior Director of Mission Delivery, retired in February 2024 after a long and impactful career. Clara added “I am grateful to Linda that she chose to honor me and share her artistry and workmanship with the Arboretum’s art collection. It was a joy to curate the collection and to manage commissions, produce shows and exhibits featuring artists like Linda. Meeting artists and patrons of art was a distinct highlight of my career.”

Art at The North Carolina Arboretum celebrates and preserves the rich cultural and natural heritage of our region. Inspired by the land, the people, and the creative process, the Arboretum’s collection brings art and craft into public spaces—enriching the environment and sparking imagination.
The permanent collection includes over 60 works of art, about half of which are sculptures installed throughout the gardens. The newest addition is Nature’s Throne—a vibrant, interactive mosaic sculpture that invites exploration, curiosity, and learning.
According to Linda, “My work ranges from the whimsical to fine art, using everything from eclectic materials to traditional stained glass and 3D sculptures.” In 2021, she became the first mosaic artist featured at the Arboretum as part of the Wild Art exhibit, which showcased her beautiful mosaic butterflies. Shortly afterward, she received a grant from the Haywood County Arts Council to support the creation of Nature’s Throne.
To construct the sculpture, Linda began by carving polystyrene foam, then applied several layers of mesh and then a durable concrete skin. Thousands of colorful tiles were cut with a tile saw and meticulously ground on a glass grinder to achieve smooth edges. She enlarged reference images and used chalk or marker to outline shapes before placing each tile—starting with the sun and finishing with the trees above the bear. Water flows around all sides of the design, symbolizing its essential role in sustaining life.
Nature’s Throne is more than just a work of art—it’s an engaging experience. Designed to be both educational and fun. A permanent label with a QR code allows visitors to access a full list of the plants and animals represented.
