Join FHNC and NC Arboretum in the field to put tree identification skills to the test for the Adventure Scientists’ Butternut Tree Project

ForestHer NC is partnering with Adventure Scientists and NC Arboretum for a hands-on Butternut Tree Identification & Field Day at the gorgeous NC Arboretum this September!!

The native butternut (or white walnut) is facing a quiet crisis due to a lethal canker disease. Finding healthy, resilient trees in our forests is the first step toward saving the species—and that’s where you come in!

At this field day, you’ll get your boots on the ground to: Learn how to spot and identify butternut trees in the wild, understand how to assess tree health and look for signs of genetic resilience, and practice the data-gathering techniques used by citizen scientists to help researchers map and protect these rare trees.

IMPORTANT PARTICIPATION DETAILS: To keep our field day running smoothly and ensure everyone can jump right into data collection, participants are required to sign up for the project and complete Adventure Scientists’ free online training prior to the event! Think of this field day as the perfect, hands-on practice session to bring that training to life.

Be sure to bring water, and dress appropriately for a forested setting (closed toed shoes, long pants, etc.). The walk will be easy to moderate, and relatively short.

Space is limited so we can keep our field groups small and hands-on!
