Join this group as we talk about how to identify the trees of Western North Carolina as they start to lose their leaves. Many of our native species are identifiable even when they’re dormant, and learning this practice is a rewarding and useful skill for all naturalists. We will talk about how to use the bark, twigs, and more to be able to recognize new and familiar trees in our region.
This program will take place outside and will follow easy trails and paved walkways. Dress for the weather and prepare to be outside for the entire program time.
Hannah Lilly is a Botanist and Ecologist interested in the connection between plants, people, and their environment. She studied Biology with a concentration in Ecology, Evolution, and the Environment (BS) at Appalachian State University. She has since worked for the North Carolina and Virginia Natural Heritage Programs conducting field work to monitor rare and sensitive plant species, and to help conserve the truly special natural communities of The Southern Appalachians. Currently, Hannah is a Botany Technician with the US Forest Service- Pisgah in partnership with The Conservation Corps of NC, through which her understanding of WNC ecology and land management is ever growing. Hannah loves to slow down, notice the details, and revel in the whimsy of the natural world with others.
Ben Warfield graduated from NC State University with a degree in wildlife biology, where he took many classes centered on species identification and ecosystem measurement. While at NC State, he helped teach tree identification and wildlife survey techniques during several field courses offered by the university. He currently works as a botany technician for the United States Forest Service and the Conservation Corps of North Carolina, with most of his work focused on the Pisgah National Forest.
